Location Details
Port William is a Scottish fishing community on the east side of Luce Bay on the Machars peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway. Early Christian sites and smuggling occurred in the area. The 18th-century harbour is great for marine angling and sailing. A bronze otter statue honours 'Ring of Bright Water' author Gavin Maxwell. Maxwell used to practise his otter on Monreith House's beach. Oscar Kokoschka, an expressionist painter, lived here during WWII. Port William is a lovely seaside village near sandy beaches, a 9-hole links course 2 miles away, walking and cycling in the Galloway highlands, and Wigtown, Scotland's first Book Town. Carnival Week is held in August with several events and attractions. Many natural reserves are in the vicinity, as is Gavin Maxwell's childhood home at Elrig.
