Situated on the coast, across from Morecambe Bay is the small village of Aldingham. Local folklore says that the village was once a mile long and that many of the cottages were washed away. Aldingham also has a reputation as a smuggler's village, the perpetrators hiding brandy from France and tobacco from America within the church crypt. The village itself is close to Furness Abbey as well as the ancient market town of Ulverston, just five miles away. Ulverston boasts a street market every Thursday and Saturday, in addition to many festivals throughout the year.
