Cartmel Cottage is charming, stone-built, end-terrace cottage, just off the main square in the historic Wensleydale town of Middleham, 2.5 miles from Leyburn. Dating from circa 1850, the cottage features an open plan living area with exposed ceiling beams, a wood-burning stove, a modern, well-equipped kitchen and an open staircase leading to the two bedrooms. Outside, there is a small front garden with a seating area, from which guests can watch racehorses trot past each day from the nearby stables. The amenities of Middleham are close-at-hand, including excellent traditional pubs and local eateries. Known as “the Windsor of the North”, Middleham is nestled between the rivers Ure and Cover. Its Georgian and Victorian building are dominated by a 12th century castle, which was owned by the “Kingmaker” Earl of Warwick during the Wars of the Roses. In 1471 it became the principal northern residence of England's last Plantagenet king, Richard III, following his marriage to Warwick’s youngest daughter, Anne Neville. Wonderful walking can be enjoyed from the doorstep, and market towns such as Richmond, Leyburn, Masham, famous for the Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, and Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese, are within easy reach. Please note that Middleham is a working rural town with farm traffic and horses on the roads from early in the morning.
The Wensleydale town of Middleham is renowned for its history and race horses. Much of the history is bound up with its Norman castle, which dates from 1190 and has a castle keep second in size only to the Tower of London. The pretty market square is partially cobbled and offers a wide range of shops, pubs and places to eat. The bustling market town of Leyburn is just a short drive away, offering a variety of great shops and pubs. All in all a superb base for exploring Wensleydale and all within easy driving distance of York, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales and Heritage Coast.
