Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with a local pub/restaurant serving traditional fare, real ales and roaring log burner alongside the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.
