The cottage lies in the hamlet of Lower Bockhampton, which was the setting for Thomas Hardy’s novel ’Under the Greenwood Tree.’ The River Frome meanders through the village, home to a renowned restaurant, and you can walk or cycle along the river path to the county town of Dorchester with its many museums, shops and attractions. Another walk from the front door takes you through the woods to Thomas Hardy’s cottage at Higher Bockhampton. The lake and gardens of Kingston Maurward are on the doorstep, and golf and fishing are available nearby. There is so much to do in this beautiful part of Dorset. Have a day out on the spectacular Jurassic Coast, enjoying magnificent clifftop views from the South Coast path and take in Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, or evocative Tyneham village. For family fun, hop on the Swanage Steam Line and visit Corfe Castle, or head to Monkey World, the Bovington Tank Museum or the Dinosaur museum in Dorchester. Just 7 miles away is Weymouth with its glorious sandy beaches, Georgian seafront, old harbour and traditional entertainment.
