It has such a fascinating history and there are many tales and legends to discover. Henrietta Street leads from Tate Hill beach up to the 199 Steps, which take you to the iconic Abbey which watches over the town from up on the cliff top. You will be following in the footsteps of Vikings, monks, smugglers, captains and even Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Haggerlythe is named after the streets original name back in 1270AD, before it was changed to Henrietta Street. The town itself was named Whitby by the Vikings who arrived on raids. The cottage is in keeping with its heritage, as it is a traditional fisherman’s cottage with many original features. Step off the cobbles and down a little side street to discover the private enclosed yard. From here you will hear the bells of St Mary’s Church which you can see perched up on the cliffs above. There is a seating area so that you can enjoy meals outside whilst listening to the seagulls. Step through into the well-equipped kitchen with its beamed ceiling evoking the past, there are many quirky features to this property, giving it character and charm. The living room boasts a wood burner, perfect for warming up after a winter’s walk watching the crashing waves. There is comfortable seating for the whole family and a dining table for meals or games. Up the winding stairs there is a modern shower room, maximising the space, with the added benefit of a heated floor. There are three bedrooms, a four-poster double and a single on the first floor, and an attic twin bedroom with views over the rooftops. Whitby is the perfect destination for anyone looking to explore the Yorkshire coast. There are some wonderful hiking trails where you can discover nearby beauty spots, the Cleveland Way along the cliff tops and the Cinder Track from Whitby to Scarborough are some of the most popular routes. There are also regular buses or even the steam train in the summer to visit destinations across the North Yorkshire Moors, as well as coastal villages such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. For dogs, you have a choice of beaches which they are sure to love, as well as forests such as Dalby and Falling Foss. You can also wander over the rolling heather-clad moors, up to peaks such as Roseberry Topping or down into the Hole of Horcum. In the town itself there are many dog friendly pubs and cafés, and even a dog bakery! Children will enjoy playing on the golden sandy beach stretching all the way to Sandsend. There are also the arcades, a surf school, a great outdoor play area at Pannet Park and an outdoor paddling pool, perfect for riding inflatables or water fights. Further afield there is Scarborough, with its Sea Life Centre and Alpramare waterpark. The theme park and zoo, Flamingo Land, is around 40 minutes away. No matter your age you are sure to love a locally made ice cream or a freshly caught fish with chips as you have a stroll along the pier. A perfect holiday for everyone! Beach ¼ mile.
