Right beside the sandy shores of the Cromarty Firth, only a quiet road is between the cottage and the water’s edge. The views from Kinleith Cottage out across the Firth to the Black Isle are exactly what you want from a holiday cottage. Invergordon and the Cromarty Firth have very rich and turbulent histories. Being a deep-water harbour and one of the best natural harbours in Europe has meant a link to seafarers for centuries. The Royal Navy had a base at Invergordon until 1956, and through the Second World War this body of water was one of the most important strategic bases for the Allies. Now you see oil rigs lining up in the firth, not destroyers. The oil industry uses the Cromarty Firth to fabricate and repair rigs for the North Sea. These monoliths stand in line and the juxtaposition with the surrounding Highland landscape is striking. You may be lucky enough to see from your window one of the huge liners which visit over the summer season. The famous Glenmorangie distillery is just up the road in Tain if you’re partial to tastings and Dalmore distillery 3 miles away in Alness. The community spirit in Invergordon remains strong and is epitomised by the Invergordon Off the Wall Mural Project. There are 17 murals in Invergordon linked by the Mural Trail. The street art is very impressive with many stories being told of the area. The artworks must be explored and absorbed during your stay in the area. People visiting the Highlands will love this location on the coast and near to the NC500 touring route. You can be on the NC500 in five minutes and exploring Inverness, Tain, Dornoch, Golspie and Brora in under an hour. John O’Groats is under two hours away, and you can take the cross-country roads from Helmsdale or via Lairg to reach the north and west coasts easily. Even Applecross and Skye are suitable day trips from Kinleith Cottage. Free WiFi
