Anchor Stores House is a fantastic character cottage built in the early 19th century by Thomas Telford during the period when he was making improvements to Wick harbour. The cottage is part of a larger building that was originally used for curing and storing of herring once the industry was booming at the beginning of the 19th century. In later years the cottage was used as an anchor store for the harbour. Located in the very historic harbour area of Wick along Harbour Quay the cottage has been lovingly restored and offers a great place to stay in the town and north east of Scotland. As soon as you lay eyes on the cottage you’ll like what you see with the dark great door and window frames working nicely with the local building stone and it has been thoughtfully and tastefully finished. Through the front door and the double bedroom with Smart TV is immediately to the left. Beyond is the open plan living/dining room with 55" Smart TV, this is a lovely space and one of the comfortable sofas is actually a double sofa bed. The kitchen and spacious shower room are at the back of the property along with access to the amazing shared garden, amazing because you walk straight out into the 19th century herring curing and storing yard. It’s an great place to relax, especially as it is essentially windproof so enjoys much warmer weather than the rest of north east Scotland. Anchor Stores House is an excellent choice not just for the good level of accommodation and interesting heritage of the property, but also because its location just off the North Coast 500. Wick is a very historic place and is enjoyable to wander round seeing what it once was in its 19th century heyday. There are many places to eat and drink as well as museums such as the Heritage Centre and local whisky distillery to enjoy. You can go horse riding, play golf on a fabulous links course, walk along a long sandy beach and enjoy both sea and fly fishing, all within 5 miles of the town. The North Coast 500 is obviously a huge draw, and basing yourself in Wick for at least a few nights, exploring in different directions from the town is a great idea ensuring you can spend some days visiting the local harbour villages, isolated castles teetering on nearby cliff edges, explore some interior roads to places like Forsinard and the Rivers Helmsdale and Halladale, and even use the local ferry to visit Orkney. This cottage is a wee gem and great a base in historic Wick, staying in a heritage property right beside the harbour. Beach 4 miles.
