Location Details

With one of the mildest climates in the north of England, the beautiful Edwardian town of Grange-over-Sands is situated between the Lake District fells and Morecambe Bay. When the Furness Railway was built, Grange-over-Sands, a sleepy fishing community, was converted into a chic Edwardian resort. A traffic-free promenade, lovely ornamental gardens, golf courses, brass band performances, and fantastic bird watching are just a few of the many attractions the town has to offer visitors today. Lake Windermere (8 miles), the charming communities of Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, and Cartmel, the birthplace of sticky toffee pudding, are all easily accessible by car. Cartmel also boasts a renowned racecourse and the L'Enclume restaurant, which has been ranked as the fourth best restaurant in the UK.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Reviews

If possible I would have given our stay 3.5 stars, however it doesn’t offer this option. We stayed in December and when it had snowed which made for interesting driving (ha!) but it’s a stunning part of the Lake District, so well worth it. As you can see from the photos, the building is impressive both inside and out and has been furnished and decorated sympathetically to its age. A welcome bottle and snacks awaited us which was a lovely touch, alongside a guide to the area and books to read. Beds were comfy and having a bathroom each was great. Some good walks and quaint pubs nearby, great for wholesome food. And Windermere is quickly accessible. All of the 3.5 stars are for the above and it fell short for us on a couple of marks. One being the log burner, as we did book specifically to use this and had a toddler in tow, so it was important we kept her warm. We’d read that supplies would be ready to use, and this was in the photos that Sykes/Booking.com advertise. There was nothing when we arrived: no logs, no firelighters, kindling etc. I did reach out to the number who stated that due to the snow, the cleaners hadn’t managed to refill the logs, which doesn’t explain the lack of kindling and firelighters. The house has plenty of room to store enough logs for each stay and it was disappointing knowing the weather coming that this was missed and not even notified. The roads weren’t safe to head back out, otherwise we would have done to keep us warm. The heating upstairs works much better than in the lounge, so I’d recommend bringing warm layers for downstairs. I’d also recommend checking on the log supplies ahead of time to ensure you’re not caught out on a cold weekend. The other downside was the lack of hot water. We all were only after quick showers and one bath for the toddler however there wasn’t enough hot water, and nothing in the guide to rectify. Being warm (heating) and having warm water (showers) are two basics which we didn’t have, especially with a small child. It is a gorgeous place and if we’d been warmer and had hot water, it would have been a five star experience and review I’m sure.
