Having recently undergone a programme of refurbishment ready for the 2021 season, West End House is a cosy two bedroom town house in the heart of Whitby, a short 5 minute stroll to the picturesque harbour, shops and fantastic restaurants. This welcoming property is perfectly situated to discover Yorkshire’s most beloved seaside resort. Set over three floors, its comfortable accommodation is ideal for families or couples who love having everything on their doorstep. It has the added benefit of an enclosed courtyard with furniture and is also pet-friendly. The property comprises a ground floor kitchen with dining area. Gather together around the scrubbed pine table for home cooked fare or bring home fish and chips after a day at the beach – it’s your holidays, you deserve a rest! The kitchen leads to an enclosed courtyard, a lovely spot for your morning cuppa. Off the courtyard, there is a utility room that provides storage, plus a useful washing machine and tumble dryer – handy for a family beach holiday. Put your feet up and relax in the homely sitting room, there’s a TV/DVD, plus a real flame effect gas fire to bring warmth and comfort after a bracing coastal walk. When it’s time for bed, head upstairs to the first floor where you’ll find a tastefully decorated king-size double bedroom with plenty of storage and a dressing table. This floor also has the house bathroom with shower, basin and WC. Children, in particular, will be delighted with the charming second floor twin nestled into the eaves – great for star-gazing. The décor is simple but pretty, with a seaside theme, plus there are bedside lamps to ensure there’s always a story before light’s out. Outside is an enclosed courtyard with table and chairs for enjoying breakfast or drinks outside. The sandy beach at Whitby has been much-loved for generations, why not try boogie-boarding or stretch your legs on a family walk to Sandsend when the tide is out, a very achievable 3 miles. Kids will enjoy crabbing in the harbour or searching for fossils, there are also fun boat trips which depart daily from the harbour. Take up the challenge of the famous ‘199 steps’ to St Mary’s Church and visit Whitby’s iconic Abbey, an inspirational landmark for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Another great experience not to be missed is the heritage steam train which runs from Whitby to Grosmont and Goathland. It’s a unique way of seeing the stunning North York Moors. The beloved seaside resort of Scarborough is also nearby (30 mins’ drive); Peasholm Park and miniature railway there are sure to delight the young at heart. There is so much to see and do in beautiful Whitby, and West End House is right at the very heart of it all – that means more time spent making memories together.

The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors. Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.

Reviews

We recently spent a week here and I could not fault elements of the property. In contrast to the earlier review we had no issues with the kitchen or any odour, damp etc. The wee house is very well fitted with everything at a hand one could require either for cleaning purposes or in cooking. We were fortunate in that the weather was excellent so lots of using the minute courtyard which provided a tranquil spot albeit the courtyard is not in any way alluring. So all in, the downstairs and first bedroom landing, all worked very well, very clean and comfortable. The second top bedroom really doesn't work, it is very confined, attracts a lot of heat given the attic location and sure you can open the windows but are deafened by the seagulls, so as a bedroom, certainly over summer it doesn't work that well. I anticipate perhaps over autumn/winter it would provide a better fit. However our experience was overwhelmingly positive and once you become accustomed to the vagaries of the parking West End cottage provides the base for exploring the excellent costal paths and beach walks. If you are visiting during the summer take a wetsuit to make full use of the coastal location !

This pretty little house is small, but the high ceilings and big windows make it feel larger. Well placed in the centre of Whitby though the steps and stairs are steep so you need to be fit. Recently redecorated in attractive colours, and spotlessly clean, it is let down by the terrible smell of damp and mould in the kitchen. After half an hour over breakfast the first morning my eyes were burning with it. We had to eat all our meals out - could not eat in there. Its a shame as they've obviously made an effort to make the place attractive, with nice bedlinen and a very good shower. But unless they sort out this mould problem, nothing else matters.

Faeces / blood / urine stained mattresses. Black mould all around the bath in the bathroom. Leaks in the ceiling and attic room - Wet patches on walls. No bannister on sheer drop from child’s bedroom In attic ( not legal). Blind doesn’t open in attic bedroom so it is dark in there during the day. Freezing cold and foul smelling in attic bedroom - Completely unsuitable for a child. Foul smell like wet dogs in the entire house. Absolutely filthy upholstery. Massive pile of fly infested bins outside the door to the property. Revolting courtyard and garden. Shower doesn’t work - impossible to regulate temperature and adjust angle/height. Fire doesn’t work. Sykes cottages completely non-responsive to issues raised. Avoid this place at all costs, as you can see from the small number of photos Tripadvisor allows (max 10), this place is NOTHING like the listing.
