Location Details

The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors. Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.

Reviews

Good sized, reasonably maintained property. Unfortunately during our stay, we had to chase the agents hard to resolve a 48 hour outage of the central heating/hot water system which severely limited comfort, bath and showers in most of the house

We stayed here for a family weekend, with a party of 8 adults in 3 vehicles. On arrival we found we could park 1 x car outside the cottage but the other 2 cars had to pay for parking in the long stay car park at £7.20 per 24hours a 5-10 minute walk away. So the unloading was interesting on a very busy road, I wouldn’t want to do this with small children. The price of the cottage for 8 x people for 3 x nights was very reasonable but on entering the cottage it was reflected by its condition. As someone who maintains and cleans holiday letting for a job, I was very disappointed in the standard of cleanliness and the general care towards this beautiful property. In my opinion the owners need to seriously look at how the property is presented. The whole house needs a deep clean, painting and in general it was dirty throughout. There were some lovely touches with a nice welcome pack and good bedding but you need to bring all the basics ie extra loo rolls, washing up liquid, tea towels sugar. I would also say that 2 of the twin bedrooms are on the 3rd floor up a very steep set of wooden stairs not suitable for small unaccompanied children. There is also no outdoor seating area directly attached to the cottage, you have a wonderful beach but if you are putting children to bed and want to sit outside in the sunshine, then the front door step is your only option. To sum up a wonderful location, a beautiful house with fantastic eating facilities in walking distance, that needs some love and attention breathing back into it. I would recommend this cottage for it’s location but wouldn’t stay again, until it had some serious attention. Come on owners you can do better !!!

What a shame. This house is in such a brilliant location just across from a gorgeous beach and is big enough for 2 families to share. My guess is that because of the fabulous location the owners have no problem letting it out and therefore feel they dont need to maintain it. The house is in quite a state of disrepair throughout with mould on the walls in several rooms. The kitchen is mouldy, foisty, the cupboards smell of damp, there was mould on the fridge and the floor is disgusting. Not only is the house in disrepair but it also needs a deep clean from top to bottom. The bedding and towels were clean but the house itself is filthy. There was dog hair everywhere, the lounge smelt of wet dog, there were cobwebs all over, the kitchen floor had mould on it, the fridge had mould on it and the windows are so filthy you can't see through them. We complained to Yorkshire Coastal Cottages about the cleanliness and they did send someone out to rectify the problem but the half an hour she spent there was nowhere near long enough to fix the problems. Sandsend is such a lovely place to stay and there are so many other holiday cottages to choose from. I would highly recommend staying in Sandsend and would definitely visit again myself but I would never stay in Quayside again. The owners of Quayside need to be fair to their visitors by investing the thousands of pounds that they charging back into the property to actually make it habitable.

The house was absolutely filthy & in very drastic need of a deep clean & maintenance. There was animal & human hair everywhere. There was mould on the kitchen floors and on the walls. There was not enough kitchen equipment for the number of guests in the property, some of the glasses that were there were in fact washed Nutella jars & on opening the kitchen cupboards there is clearly a damp issue somewhere. Although we had deliberately booked self catering accommodation, we ate out most nights as couldn’t face cooking & eating in the house. The hoover and brush that were left for us to clean up after ourselves were also so filthy & full of dirt & hair we couldn’t use them. Yorkshire holiday Cottages did send a cleaner again when we complained, the cleaner couldn’t seem to see what the issue was & stated that due to covid is wasn’t as clean as they’d expect. They stayed for about half an hour and when we asked if they Hoover upstairs as we had been able to put the baby down on the floor as it was so dirty, she said that this hadn’t been mentioned & appeared quite put out. This was not a case of the property not being cleaned properly once, this property has not been cleaned or maintained for a long period of time. Despite paying a premium rate to stay in the location, we were not able to relax and enjoy our stay as we should have done.

We were so looking forward to coming here for 3 nights next week. Unfortunately my daughter who is very ill with cancer, was taken into hospital , therefore our holiday was not to be., the owners of this cottage have kindly given us a full refund on receipt of my daughters admission to hospital letter. Thank you so much owners amd hopefully one day we will get to make the trip . Catherine

This cottage is dilapidated and filthy. We were greeted with bags of rubbish from previous occupants outside the front door, which were still there 4 days later when we left prematurely. The house itself was dirty, uncared for, smelt of mould and damp. It clearly had not been cleaned properly for weeks - dirt, crumbs and bits of old foodwaste from weeks of previous guests left on shelves, on the floors, on sofas etc. There was insufficient crockery and glasses and cooking items for a group of 9 people. There were holes and large splinters in the bare floorboards, missing bedknobs, broken kitchen binlids, broken remote controls... the list goes on. At worst there was a pile of dirty laundry from the previous guests piled up in the corner of one of the rooms. Sykes have been totally dismissive and contemptuous of our concerns and maintain that we should have allowed them to come and clean the property mid week whilst we were still there. In Covid-19 times this would not have been possible without a huge amount of disruption to us on our holiday - namely packing up our stuff, and vacating the property for at least a full day whilst it was fully deep cleaned. We have received no acknowledgement of this, or apology from Sykes. Absolutely disgraceful.
