Ballachulish is a Highland's village found at the mouth of Loch Level with both north and south villages, adjoined by the Ballachulish Bridge, home to a selection of shops, pubs, and hotels between both villages. Kinlochleven is closeby with its indoor ice centre, whilst Fort William boasts access to the Nevis Range and Glencoe. Ballachulish is a great choice to explore the Scottish Highlands.
In general a good property and great location. HOWEVER, we made the mistake of complaining about something only to find property owner got their own back and stung us. So, book it, but if you complain make sure you to take pictures of EVERYTHING so you can counter any response.
Sea Otter cottage is in a beautiful location and has a wonderful view of Loch Linhe. The cottage is one of about 6 cottages on a slip road adjacent to a main road. The road is generally quiet at night but can be noisy with motorbikes and lorries during the day. The cottage is clean and well equipped and was homely for our stay. The upstairs shower pressure is poor but the downstairs shower room has a better force in its shower. There is a large washing machine and efficient condenser tumble drier. We were able to get the washing hung out but beware the grass is very wet as the water runs down the hill at the back of the cottage and down the steps. The log fire is a great assett on a cold night but we had difficulty locating logs some days in the local shops. There is a walkway/cyclepath across from the cottage right along the loch. It's a great 20 minute walk on a lovely night to amble down to the Hollytree hotel for a drink/ meal. Apparently sea otters can be seen playing in the pool opposite the cottages but we were not lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them. I would recommend the cottage as there are various sights to see all within easy access.
Sea Otter Cottage stands 2.5 miles down the road to Oban from Ballachulish. To say the Loch-side (Linnhe) location is idyllic would be a contender for understatement of the year! Green hillside at the back of you and a Loch comparable to a Norwegian Fjord out front; with mountains to view across the other side and genuine dark skies at night, it is beautiful. Glencoe, Fort William, Kinlochleven and all they have to offer are all within easy reach. The cottage itself has been very well thought out, we found ourselves wanting for nothing. The kitchen in particular impressed; you can tell that the owner is someone who can turn their hand to cooking and has considered guests who might like to do the same. The log burner in the lounge is super efficient too. I never give 10 out of 10 for anything, so it has to be the same with 5 out of 5; in everything I do myself I think there is always room for improvement, so I apply the same rules to all things, but the tweaks required for me to give a 100% score to Sea Otter Cottage would be very minor things. I’m not going to say anything about them on here because there is nothing that should detract from the quality of anyone else’s stay. This place truly felt like home from home, and quite honestly, I wish it was! I would not hesitate to book it again. Get out and walk, use the cycle path across the road, sit on the rocks beside the Loch to watch the sunset, explore your surroundings, and you’ll be sure to have a great time there.
