Situated within striking distance of Port Isaac’s picturesque harbour and amidst the hustle and bustle of the popular fishing village is this quaint, former fisherman’s cottage, Waves End. This charming holiday accommodation is the perfect base for families in pursuit of exploring this wonderful part of Cornwall and the fishing village, which doubled up at Port Wenn in the ITV television series Doc Martin, starring Martin Clunes. Enter into the warmth of the pastel painted, stone-built cottage into the charming open-plan living room, which has retained a wealth of character to serve as a gentle reminder of its interesting past. The characterful Range cooker set in an exposed brick fireplace takes centre stage before the welcoming seating arrangement, which you can look forward to curing up upon after an action-packed day. The kitchen boasts a range of quality appliances, including an electric oven and hob, a microwave and a quirky fridge, certain to entice a spot of home-cooking, and the handy washing machine, so that you can easily freshen up your clothes after a wonderful day at the beach. When sleep calls, head upstairs to find two light-filled bedrooms, comprising of a double bedroom and a bunk bedroom, both with sash windows, framing the pretty views of Port Isaac to wake up to each morning. Immerse yourself in your surroundings further by taking a stroll through the charming fishing village, where you will be spoilt for choice by the selection of shops and pubs that awaits you. Be sure to make a stop off at the nearby Golden Lion to delight in a hearty evening meal, complemented by a pint of great ale or head to the famous Nicky B's, to sample a delicious Cornish pasty. Explore the maze of narrow streets, home to the narrowest thoroughfares in Britain, named the Squeezy Belly Alley, before stopping of at the picturesque harbour, where fishing and scenic trips can be taken during the summer months. After enjoying the harbour side, start to climb up the Roscarrock Hill, forming the western edge of the harbour, where you will find a Methodist chapel, which is now the Port Isaac Pottery and Café, before you reach Fern Cottage, which was used as Doc Martins Surgery, in the popular TV series. Keen walkers can use Port Isaac as a base in which to walk the famous South West Coast Path to enjoy the dramatic coastal landscape and to admire the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coastline. Neighbouring Port Gaverne offers a small sandy beach, as well as opportunities for sea-kayaking and coasteering days out courtesy Ben at Cornish Rock Tors, whilst slightly further away is Polzeath, the area's best surfing beach. Alternatively, head inland to explore Bodmin Moor and its fascinating archaeological remains, offering superb countryside walks. Dream come true to stay in Portwenn (lol) Village, just steps from the harbour. Village is so charming and surprisingly relaxing even though very crowded during the day. Loved walking on the Coast Path to Port Quin and back. Cottage was small but very comfortable. Could see Dr. Ellingham's surgery from my bedroom window. Even my non Doc Martin fan companions loved it.
We had a lovely holiday in Port Isaac. This old fishermans cottage was ok and had lots of charm it is very compact and not in my opinion suitable for 4 people. The bathroom is very small and compact, it was ok for us but if you are of a wider/bigger build or disabled then this is not the cottage for you. There were a couple of things that stood out and really need sorting - there is a dining table and chairs but were unusable as we could not for the life of us work out how the chairs unfolded and neither could anyone else by the look of it as they were covered in a very thick layer of dust and to be honest there wasn't really room to open the table up, so we ate our meals on our laps with a place mat on our knees, not ideal! Also something a bit more of a concern the bedroom window would not stay open as the sash cord was missing and the window frame was rotten and falling apart so when you did try to open it a small pane of glass dropped slightly, we managed to find a block of wood to wedge it open as it was too warm to sleep with no window open. You really should be able to open a window and it's not good for covid ventilation! The parking is not ideal and please note that paying for a weeks car parking space does not guarantee you get one, we had to queue for a space everyday when we returned after a day out. I was lucky enough to book waves end last year before Sykes over inflated their prices, for the same week next year its £300 more expensive and I certainly wouldn't pay £1500+ for it in the summer! It's not worth anymore than I paid for it.They can't put it down to extra cleaning because yes it was clean but not overly clean, it's just greed! I've booked with Sykes's many times but this is the first time I've had cause to really complain. They asked me to review my holiday and if I wanted it published as yet they haven't!
The cottage is adequate, but very small, certainly not for four people at all. However the agents failed to mention the constant flow of noisy drunken people shouting until 1am, sat under the window on next doors bench. We were woken by Delivery drivers parked alongside the cottage from 6am onwards and one morning there were four deliveries. An awful experience with no sleep and we left early. Would not recommend this cottage in this location ever.
