The village of Cartmel is renowned as the prettiest village in the Lake District. The village features walks, cobbled streets with antique shops, a gift shop, traditional pubs and the Michelin Star awarded L'Enclume restaurant.
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
This could be so fabulous. Stayed there for 2 nights in the Huntsman. The cottage was vulgar, filthy and infested with fleas. Stains on the carpets, broken furniture, hot wat only worked for 1 night. How the hell do they get away with it. ...oh, hang on...it's one of Sykes properties. Say no more.
Owner Martin Ainscough was already aware of the issue after I messaged him about finding bees in the property on our return to the cottage after being out for the day. It totally spoilt our stay and I raised this with Sykes Cottages and then I called Mr Ainscough.......he did not even want to discuss the situation and told me "I have nothing to say" and was just dreadfully dismissive and rude. It should also be seriously noted that any bees nest in a chimney flue needs investigation, as CO2 into the property is potentially lethal, despite a co2 monitor on the wall. But there was no indication how old this is or if batteries are fresh. If the state of the property is anything to go buy I would be wary of this and not trust this and NOT STAY HERE until this is resolved.
I have given one star and this was for the location which is lovely. This could be a really special little place but instead it really wasn’t. We go away for weekends a lot and have stayed in many dog friendly places and this was the most dismal. There’s really no excuse for grubby carpets that haven’t even been patched together properly, badly hung curtains and a sofa that honestly isn’t fit for purpose. But more than that, the place hadn’t been cleaned properly by anyone’s standards and needed cleaning before we could even stay there. With just a little money spent by the owner this could be really nice, but sorry, it just isn’t.
After staying here for the last five years our group is no longer welcome apparently we have too many children that may put windows our! The cottages have not improved in the last five years in fact they have become shabbier - faulty lights, faulty smoke alarms, faulty carbon monoxide monitors, threadbare carpets we can honestly say we left the properties cleaner than when we arrived - I’m sure the owner will totally disagree with my review - but ce la vie!
The location is great, we stayed here about 12 years ago in a different cottage. Very friendly and you can bring your furry four legged friend with you. Yes it’s not the most salubrious place on the earth with old furniture and needs more kitchen equipment but it was clean. The bedding was clean but the towels a little rough. Things could do with some updating. A the end of the day it served a purpose, convenient for Carmel where we went for a beautiful meal. We will stay again. But please make a few updates!
No positives to say whatsoever ,photos on website are not of actual cottage !!! patio furniture old, broken and filthy as you walk towards cottage , cobwebs all over front of main door and a birds nest above door in full view , walked into the open plan lounge and kitchen , flies everywhere ,furniture old and dirty , tried to be positive but then opened a cupboard and bugs all over floor . I never even went upstairs to look.. We had to leave as my wife was in tears .
The Coach House was very cozy and inviting and comfortable! The Cartmel area is so beautiful. We loved the fireplace and what my daughter called "the princess bed." It was a great location to escape and relax.
Furnishing tired but fitted well with cottage and having two dogs who were made as welcome as us was ideal. Would definitely recommend for dog friendly holiday. Gardens beautiful. Would definitely go again.
What a delightful little cottage with plenty of character. We made good use of the The downstairs living area made good use of the space for lounging ,cooking and dinning. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking your own meals and there was plenty of room for storing groceries. The bedroom was unique and very cosy with a comfortable four posted bed, plenty of storage space too. The bathroom had a modern touch but fitted in well with the character of the cottage and the lovely deep bath with plenty of piping hot water was just what you need after a day out walking. The walk to the top of Hampsfell, which was straight from the cottage door, was exceptional and the view at the top was well worth the climb. An excellent cosy cottage for two which I will certainly recommend to friends .
We could not fault this property. We had a very relaxed and enjoyable stay.
The Coach House was all I ever thought a cottage should be. It was absolutely beautiful and it was in the most beautiful setting. I just cannot put into words just how perfect this cottage was and I really appreciate the owners allowing me to rent it for a short while. The weekend will stay with me and my wife to be for the rest of our lives. Thanks a million.
The Game Keeper's Retreat, Longlands at Cartmel Sleeps two, with separate kitchen. Ideal for the dog , we've been visiting here for fifteen years now and it just gets better with time. With huge gardens to walk the dog and everything you need on arrival. The cottage was spotlessly clean and we didn't have to ask for anything once, living in the old cottage atmosphere with all of the modern luxuries combined with the newly refurbished kitchen and two person bath / shower room and the fantastic king sized bed. If you want to take the beloved dogs then this is the place for us, the most pet friendly hotel in the Lakes without the usual hassles associated with weekend breaks. The newly rebuilt barn is a feature on its own just adds character to the place and the addition of the new greenhouses and conservatory will just add even more character to the fantastic walled Edwardian Kitchen Garden. A great location for a base to explore the south Lakes with excellent amenities and super food at the nearby Derby Arms in Lindale....cant wait until our next visit...............................
A very quiet and relaxing location with easy access to attractions but remote enough to be out of the hustle and bustle. The cottage was great for my solo break but equally good for a couple. The bed was very comfortable and the roll top bath a real luxury.
Mis-sold! Sykes Cottages rented me this cottage without warning of the barn renovation adjacent to the property. This affected the 3-day break for myself and my two dogs significantly. The building work, which started at 8 am, involved workers crossing in front of the cottage, vehicles parked immediately outside, as well as coming and going so that I was unable to tether my dogs outside safely. Access to the neighbouring fields (one of the reasons I chose the property) was blocked by the site and by the equipment - in itself a contravention of health and safety laws. The 'beautiful parkland' advertised on Sykes' web site was cancelled out by the eyesore that all this entailed. The cottage itself smelled of damp and smoke and the sofa and chairs are in dire need of replacement - old, stained and very uncomfortable. My letter of complaint to Sykes received a derisory response, offering an amount of compensation almost too embarrassing to quote (35 pounds!!) and a thanks for bringing the building work to their attention so that they could alert future customers. . . a standard useless response. My follow-up letter pointing out the woeful inadequacy of their reply was ignored. Shame on them. Hence resorting to Trip Advisor: at least people looking for a reliable, professional rental company will see that their hard-earned money is best spent elsewhere.
Sykes cottages must be hiding bad reviews as mine hasn't been published. Mould in porch greeted us, and more mould in the bathroom awaited our inspection. We understand that we should supply most things for a self catering holiday but only supplying one bin bag and one cleaning cloth seems a little bit tight, and then being asked to help out by stripping the bed before we left kind of started our holiday on a sour note. Also be prepared for other dog owners that allow their little friends to poo anywhere without cleaning up the mess, in the description of the property you are allowed two well behaved dogs, it should read two well behaved adults required to look after their pets.
The owner was very welcoming and helpful. It was in a perfect location for walks and the site is very dog friendly!
A lovely detached cottage which was located in its own grounds and gardens in a very quiet and peaceful place. The cottage was quite spacious but also cosy and had a lovely 4 poster bed in the large bedroom. On the whole I had a wonderful holiday.
Liked the setting of the property, the relaxed atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. We found it perfect for the dog who could roam around the gardens. Lots of easy walks and ease of access to the A590 to go to other destinations.
Completely dog friendly with walks straight from the cottage, yet only 1 mile from the beautiful village of Cartmel.
We had a fantastic time. The cottage was lovely, cosy and homely and the grounds really fabulous. We loved the feeling of freedom. The countryside around the cottage is stunning, with a fell right out of the back gate which we climbed every day for views over the estuary on one side and over to the Conniston mountains on the other. The dog loved it - so much space to run around! It was perfect for us and we will be booking again next year. The perfect break and just what we needed!
This is our second time at this property this year, and I think that speaks volumes. We always have a good relaxing holiday here.
Our second time at Longlands estate, and once again, a delightful, peaceful, and very comfortable stay.
Beautiful grounds and surroundings.
Wonderful setting , very good for our dog. Unfortunately the cottage has super potential , but needs some money spending on it especially a new mattress and a shower to be fitted. We booked through Sykes cottages.
Great place to go to chill out, especially if you have dogs. The owner is a gentleman and very helpful in all matters holiday. One of the most relaxing Holidays weve had in years
We had a great time relaxing with our dogs. There were great walks right at the front door of the cottage. All in all we had a brilliant time.
The gardens were amazing! We really like the facilities on offer - wifi, washing machine, tumble drier, etc. Really loved the location and the laid back feel, we could truly relax in the cottage. In fact we would like to live in the cottage!
If my saint bernard and labrador could write they would say the same as us Excellent cosy accommadation stunning location ideal for walks in the country side but not to far from cartmel town. The walled garden was stunning and the owner was very helpful and friendly
Very peaceful - garden was very large and safe for our dogs. Excellent food at Uplands Hotel.
The cottage has a superb location on the grounds of Longlands' estate with easy access to the Lakes and walking distance into Cartmel. This charming old detached building has been renovated to a high standard. Free wifi was a bonus too.
