Lakeside is renowned as a peaceful Lake District holiday destination, nestled around the southern tip of Lake Windermere and away from the hustle and bustle of the busier areas. But despite this, you'll find a wealth of things to see and do within easy reach - whatever your holiday tastes. Windermere Lake Cruises depart from Lakeside Pier, and cruise the full length of Lake Windermere to Bowness and Ambleside - a wonderfully stress-free way to explore. You'll find plenty of walking routes in the area; including Alfred Wainwright's Finsthwaite Heights route from Newby Bridge (adjacent to Lakeside) and up to High Dam for more lovely walks & perhaps a wild swim. Lake District historic sites such as Holker Hall and Gardens, Cartmel Priory & village, Stott Park Bobbin Mill, Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are all within easy reach by car, with no need to navigate through busy tourist areas. Further north, you’ll discover Esthwaite Water and the landscapes that famously inspired the children's author Beatrix Potter. Her former home can be visited at Hill Top, in the small village of Near Sawrey, then onward and you'll reach Hawkshead village - a wonderful place to while away a day, exploring quaint cobbled streets and a blissfully car-free village centre.
Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.

Sykes (the rental company) would not publish my truthful review so I will leave it here in brief. The heating was not working (as say almost all of the reviews on other sites), we were phoned about this on our way down from Scotland as if it had just happened, when in fact, this has been (and continues to be according to even more recent reviews) a problem for well over a year. We were left with three small portable heaters. This would be a huge problem in winter. The hot water was utterly dangerously scalding due to the immersion being left on 24 hours a day due to heating not working. The bathroom is in a very bad way with black mould on the bath sealant, mould on the blinds and ceiling, mould on kitchen sink sealant, and generally very tired. Wallpaper hanging off in kitchen. Decor extremely scruffy and dated. Not clean, very dusty, partial jigsaw under living room rug so obviously not hoovered. Garden very scruffy, two wasps nests so unable to sit outside as constantly being attacked by wasps (also mentioned in previous reviews and also not addressed!) MOSS growing on the inside windows of the conservatory. Only good points were reasonable beds and reasonable equipped kitchen. Location is described as being within "walking distance" to a lot of places but there are NO footpaths, you have to walk in the main roads with fast moving tourist traffic. Not ideal and not safe for kids or dogs. The property COULD be a gem, but it needs so much work done to it and the garden, to bring it up to standard. This would mean investing some of the rental money (over 2K a week according to some sites!) back into the cottage, which obviously has not happened. I am writing this review because it has annoyed me that recent reviews are still mentioning heating not working etc, and people are spending their hard earned cash on these places hoping for a nice holiday, and get disappointed like this when there are clear issues which they KNOW about and which they have not addressed. I took pictures of all the issues but was not allowed to have my reviews published on Skyes website. Invest some much needed attention in this property and it could be really nice. As it stands, disappointing and quite neglected.
Our family of 5 went for a weeks stay at Nutwood cottage Lakeside, Newby bridge. On arrival the cottage is well presented and very picturesque, the photos on the website don’t do it justice. Very clean, comfortable beds, log burner and fully equipped with all you will need for a relaxing Holliday. Fantastic local hotel/restaurant nearby called the Swan Hotel and Spa, 5 mins walk to the marina where you can book a trip on the lakeside steam ferry which will take you to Bowness or Ambleside. Steam train, aquarium and much more. Will definitely book again in the future as it was the perfect get away for total relaxation.
