This enchanting Grade II listed cottage is one of the very oldest in Ambleside, dating back to the 1580s and tucked away in a peaceful historic corner, with front and rear views to the surrounding fells. With a stylish and luxurious refurbishment, the original features shine; flagged slate with underfloor heating, old oak floors and beamed ceilings, a cosy bright lounge with window seat, traditional open fire and luxurious furnishings. A magnificent curved oak staircase takes you up to the romantic bedroom with brass bed, and Victorian-styled bathroom. Private parking at the rear, and pretty front garden. Old Oak Cottage is a true hideaway, perfectly formed for lazy mornings and cosy evenings in, but the delights of Ambleside’s pubs, restaurants and shops just a stroll away. Ambleside. a contemporary, characterful Lakeland village with a spectacular backdrop of Lake District fells. Ideal for walking, cycling or boating activities, its also a lovely spot for contemporary shops, leisurely lake cruises, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs. There are 2 cinemas, a Jazz bar and the Lake Cruises leave regularly from Waterhead, a great way to explore without driving. The tiny 'Bridge House' is one of the most photographed places here, sat on a bridge in the middle of the village. Oh, and don’t forget our Roman fort, Galava. One of William Wordsworth's former family homes can be visited nearby at Rydal Mount & Gardens. His Grasmere home, Dove Cottage, is also worth a visit and only a short drive away on the scenic A591.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Reviews

Came here as a last minute 5 night stay following the unexpected death and funeral of my father who regularly stayed in the lakes. Rang Sykes, who my father had booked from in the past and this property was selected for its rustic charm, open fire, proximity to centre of Ambleside and use of a gym with pool, sauna and jacuzzi. The weather was very cold and upon arrival we had to search to find the operating instructions for the heating, Wi-fi, cooker, underfloor heating - subsequently found and turned on. The property is ideally situated with private parking close to Ambleside, however the gym is 4 miles away and although the advert states all fuel is provided, this doesn't include any coal or logs. The advert fails to inform how the staircase and upper floor is precarious and a health and safety risk - slippery/uneven/sunken, dowels protruding through the boards as a kick hazard, no handrail on the staircase (notice posted at the property) - a life changing event for someone waiting to happen (if not already). Property is well stocked with amenities although we did find all the downstairs furniture worn and uncomfortable. Great location, disappointing upstairs.
