The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.

Whilst the view is stunning and the location fabulous the cottage has been difficult to enjoy due to the damp and mould issues downstairs. There is no denying the gorgeous view and lovely location, but we are leaving two days early because of the damp problem. The smell of damp was quite noticeable on arrival. When we went to go to bed on the first night it became apparent there was black mould on the wall in the downstairs bedroom, the carpet next to it and the curtains smell very badly of damp and the carpet feels damp when you tread on it barefoot. Also we had to hoover behind the bedside tables in there (at midnight!) due to them literally being stuck to the wall with cobwebs and spiders in situ. We tried sleeping upstairs on the second night but that bedroom also smells ‘fousty’ and we spent two nights sleeping on the settee in the living room before deciding we’d had enough. It wasn’t helped when the cooker fuse tripped out four times when we were just trying to heat a meal for 20 minutes. The cottage could be amazing, it must have been lovely before the damp issue got this bad. The owners have put in a dehumidifier but that won’t deal with damp in the walls (I’d suggest a conversation with the neighbour about the missing down pipe right by the wall that is getting the damp issue). We’re not the first people to mention this problem when we checked previous feedback on Sykes website. We did contact Sykes twice but no one replied, so we left. We were sad to be leaving early, but we vacated two days early as a result of the issues described.
