Briardale Cottage is a charming early 20th century property, one of six pleasant terrace houses situ-ated in a quiet cul-de-sac yet close to Ambleside’s many attractions. A short stroll will take you to the centre of town for a romantic meal or a relaxing drink in the one of its many restaurants, bars and cafes. Enjoy browsing the shops, catch the latest film at one of the two excellent cinemas or enjoy a river walk through lovely Rothay Park. If you feel more adventurous take on one of the acclaimed Lakeland trails such as the walk to the top of Wansfell, Todd Crag or the more challenging Fairfield Horseshoe and all from your own door-step. After a busy day, relax with your favourite drink, dine alfresco or take time out to admire the lovely views in the peaceful communal gardens, where the table and chairs on your patio await. You will appreciate the peacefulness as there is no passing traffic. Arriving at the cottage, unload the car from your own parking space which sits right by your front door. Enter the enclosed porch entrance and store your outdoor wear. Sit on the leather sofa and feel the cosy warmth of the log burner set into the deep fireplace. Explore further to find your charming shaker style kitchen and dining area with cream units and wooden worktops. The lovely shared rear garden can be reached along a small hallway through the back door. This cottage also benefits from a convenient downstairs bathroom. Climb the stairs to discover your good-sized bedroom with king-size bed and fitted wardrobes with plenty of storage, as well as a contemporary bathroom where you can enjoy a refreshing shower. With so much adventure right on your doorstep, Briardale Cottage offers a wonderful base for your next family holiday to the Lake District.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The key question is always "would I stay here again?" and this time the answer is unfortunately no. On the plus side the property has an absolutely fantastic location, 60 secs walk from town, a pretty (but not enclosed) garden and a nice wood burner. The negatives far outweigh these positives though. There is a very bad smell in the kitchen, like years of grease are ingrained in it and a strong smell of drains from the down stairs toilet. Try as we might with candles etc we could not cover it and it returns very quickly, it's really unpleasant. The next main issue is that the boiler is very noisy and it's in a cupboard in your bedroom, we had to turn it off each night to be able to sleep which results in a freezing cold house in the morning. The shower is also a really, really old design with very bad water pressure so no refreshing hot shower after a day on the hills. Finally the place is just in dire need of upgrade, very tired decor throughout and comes with the absolute bare minimum essentials when you arrive, every other cottage we've ever stayed in had more. The "welcome pack" for this cottage is just a book of equipment manuals and risk assessments rather than the usual personalised book about the cottage and how to make the best of it. Seems like it is being run with minimal effort and investment. We enjoyed our week in Ambleside as always but compared to other similar priced properties we've stayed in before this one was a let down.
