A beautiful large historic house, so very comfy, spotlessly clean and comfy! Excellent base for travelling around. Fantastic location with loads to do!Thank you for making our family holiday so very special.
A beautiful house in a beautiful setting but needs some attention, some of these might seem like minor points but would have made a big difference. Bedrooms are all set out nicely and look lovely but the master smells musty and mouldy. I can only assume from the small en-suite. Living space is small and you can’t all fit in the living room. The sofas are tired and lack cushions. No lamps in the living room so you sit in full bright light all night. Kitchen is small, but manageable but lacking some essential equipment. Steps to the garden are very steep and worn. Garden is astroturfed. Trampoline was a welcome addition which the children enjoyed. The garden is not very private from the road. There are some small shrubs planted so maybe in a few years it will be better. Garden furniture is two big bench tables which are great to eat outside off but a few more relaxing pieces of furniture would be lovely. A truely beautiful house with some lovely history but could do with a few updates.
Wow this house did not disappoint. Situated in such a beautiful area with so much history and plenty to do close by from lovely walks along the canal to the shops and restaurants in Matlock Bath. The house was beautiful and clean, surprised by the previous poor reviews but perhaps there was more emphasis on ensuring the house was in great condition following those few reviews who knows. Plenty of space across three floors and all the bedrooms set out so nicely. The log burner was a particularly welcome treat of an evening. As one of the previous reviews suggest it is a shame the kitchen and dining aren’t open but this is a historic building so we understood this is out of the owners hands, it didn’t ruin our stay anyway. I would certainly recommend staying here
We stayed at the mill managers house for a week in October 2021 and we’re not disappointed. Set on three floors there was more than enough space for our 14 guests and everyone commented on how comfy the beds were. The log burner was particularly welcome after spending chilly days out walking. Our younger guests really enjoyed the spacious garden and trampoline. We attended a tour of the famous Cromford mills during our stay and felt quite special to be staying in the mill managers house as he would have stood on those stone steps to watch the workers arrive at the mill over 200 years ago. So much history literally on your doorstep! We found the house very clean and well appointed throughout which we were pleased about after reading a couple of bad reviews. The only negative would be that the kitchen and dining room aren’t open plan but I suppose as this is a grade 1 listed building that’s not possible. There is so much to do in the area with fantastic walks and it’s very close to shops and restaurants. We would definitely recommend!
Wow! What a place! The history is unbelievable in this grade 1 listed building. Very quirky and has lots of lovely original features. The owner must of rectified the problems with the last review as everything was perfect. Don’t expect a new boring box of a house. It’s 250 years old and is a more enjoyable experience because if this. The kitchen is small as that is what is was like in Georgian times. This could be a drawback to some. The log burner was great and was all furnished to an excellent standard. The birthplace of the industrial revolution and it’s like staying in a museum. Brilliant!
I will start by trying to point out the positives. A large spacious house with spacious sloping garden, several well worn steep steps to house and garden. House is on a very busy and noisy main road but this quietens at night. Conveniently situated for the cromford mill and the wharf. Comfortable beds bed linen clean, however not so the pillows which had no pillow protectors and smelled awful. Lacked basic cleanliness. Cooking pans with food still in them, furniture dirty, cobwebs everywhere. Worst of all the super king room and en-suite was mouldy, so much that the guest sleeping in that room had to receive urgent medical attention for an acute asthma attack brought on by the mould. The en-suite shower cubicle door is tiny and difficult to get in and out of. The dining chairs are dangerous, several of them just fell apart when they were sat on. Which was very worrying given we had elderly family members. The lounge furniture I assume is leather is filthy and has an unpleasant odour. The bottom of the bath in the main bathroom is dangerously uneven, the skin on the bottom moves when you stand on it,, it’s quite bizarre. The cooker door wouldn’t close the owner did send a new cooker to replace the old so we are thankful for that. The owner also sent workmen to fix the radiators that didn’t work, they couldn’t repair them. And the unsafe chairs which they also couldn’t repair. The owner sent the cleaning company back on the second day by which time we had washed and cleaned everything ourselves before using. Windows are possibly original and unfortunately haven’t been well cared for, if you do manage to open them be aware they will suddenly drop down by themselves, suggest owner needs to repair the sashes, as this could be dangerous for children. Like many others, We were looking forward to our family break cromford Matlock is a beautiful area with lots to see and do. Unfortunately for us this property spoiled what should have been a joyous time. Given the very high cost of this rental we expected a good standard especially in cleanliness but this was not the case. I do not recommend staying here. We feel disappointed and to be honest, ripped off with the price paid for such a poor standard property.
I completely agree with the Glitterverse review from Oct 2021. I booked this property through Sykes and I'm still waiting for my review to be published on their website! There is bed space for 14 people in this house, but only actually living space for about 8 max. The oven door didn't work, I had to unblock the bath plughole myself before it would drain, the sofas are terrible, the kitchen equipment (such as pans and knives) are cheap and nasty, the en-suite was incredibly mouldy, there was food on the table mats, no instructions provided for the heating (which was set to come on in summer), no lamps in the lounge .... Thankfully the weather was good enough for us to spend our evenings outside on the astroturf(!) surrounded by weeds. Such as shame for what could be a lovely BnB or guest house, but this is not fit for a holiday cottage with a large group of people. On the plus side, there's a great cafe up the road which does a cracking breakfast.
