Reviews

A clean, comfortable, quiet, typical cottage on a farm. The owners were discrete and very kind. The sofas were large and the beds were good. The kitchen furniture and tools were particularly complete for cooking.

We received a warm and helpful welcome and enjoyed a very comfortable stay in this well furnished and maintained cottage. This is well located for exploring Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, the coast and Hadrian's Wall and we'd be very happy to stay here again. Thank you.

The welcome was very friendly and everything was ready when we arrived. The location is first class; from visiting Beamish Museum, the Roman Forts on Hadrian's Wall and Metro Shopping Mall. If I go back to the area, this would be my first choice.

Rated by Mrs Timson reviewed on 24th July 2014

The cottage was so stylish yet comfortable. Every need was catered for. The owner was so very helpful. The situation was ideal for touring by car, but well placed also, being on the bus route and within walking distance of shops. We found the cottage such a great place to relax in and can highly recommend it. This is the 19th year we four friends have holidayed together and the joint opinion was Houghton North Farm Cottage was the best yet.

Rated by Mrs Dell reviewed on 23rd June 2014

We enjoyed everything from start to finish. The cottage was very comfortable and clean and the owners were friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. They were very informative about the area, where to go and what to do. The cottage is in a good position to explore the surrounding attractions and is the best one we have stayed in in the last six years. Thank you.

Houghton North Farm Cottage is very accessible, clean, tidy and a home from home. A very nice holiday.

Rated by Mr Charlton reviewed on 23rd September 2013

The location was ideal, easy access to the main road and about 10 minutes from A1, which meant there were many places to visit within a relatively short drive (Beamish, Durham, Alnwick, Morpeth etc). Nice views from the cottage. Comfortable beds. The log burning stove was a lovely feature, and made the lounge very cosy in the evenings. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

Enjoyed everything! From the location to the suitability of the accommodation and the owners being so helpful and friendly. Loved the peace and quiet, coupled with the weather. Couldn't have asked for more.

We stayed at Houghton North Farm Cottage while we were visiting my parents and family. We wanted somewhere we could hold a first birthday party for our son, so we needed somewhere with enough space. The cottage was very well apointed, and looked like it had been decorated/renovated quite recently. The huge sliding door in the kitchen (more of a moveable glass wall really!) was impressive, and both bathrooms were beautifully finished. We were impressed by the lovely solid wood furniture in the cottage, which seemed to be of a high standard. We had enough space to accomodate about 15 family members for the birthday party. The cottage is on a working farm, and the owners were friendly and pleasant when we arrived. Once we were booked in, they pretty much left us alone to get on with it, which suited us perfectly. The location suited us perfectly - close enough to Newcastle to be convenient for visiting family, but far enough out to feel more peaceful. It would be a nice base from which to visit places in the Tyne valley and along Hadrian's Wall. The only slight negative I can think of is a lack of outdoor space. There's a small concrete "yard" just outside the kitchen, but no grass area or garden. It wasn't a problem for us at all, but some people may miss having somewhere nicer to sit outdoors.

Excellent facilities, and very comfortable. Convenient both for Newcastle, and for Hadrian's Wall. The only one (slight) problem was access - a difficult turn in and out onto a fast road. Mirrors needed? We would certainly stay there again.

The quality of the property far exceeded our expectations. The decor was generally finished to a high standard and the furnishings were of a high quality.

A wonderfull location to stay for a vacation in one of the best counties in England. My family and myself felt so relaxed during our stay in this well provided cottage. We stayed for one week in September 2012 and again in January 2013.The owners are so helpful and Paula makes sure that you enjoy your stay.Being a working farm, you must be perpared to see the odd animal giving you the "nosey" look.Kitchen was very well stocked if you wish to do your own cooking, but with the fine local public houses this was not an option.Strongly recommend.

Rated by Mr Robin Spring reviewed on 13th March 2013

Loved the quality of the fittings within the cottage. Having a cosy woodburner on Valentine's day was superb!

Rated by Mrs Knowles reviewed on 17th February 2013

Perfect for connections to Newcastle, Metro Centre and lovely local towns such as Hexham. It is such a lovely cottage. The owner and family really make you welcome. She even found the time to show me the cows they look after, after telling her they are my pet of all animals. This is my second stay in less than six months and hope to stay there again in March if it is not booked. A wonderful village to stay in. I would strongly recommend it. Thank you Sykes for making bookings so simple.

Rated by Mr Spring reviewed on 19th January 2013

Loved the fact it was a working farm. Owners were very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Nothing was a bother to them. Great explanations about the parking, animals, the boiler, the fire and recycling. All the things we usually worry about. Very generous with supplies in the kitchen and toilet rolls.

Rated by Mrs Charlton reviewed on 7th January 2013

Close enough to home as it was a girlie trip away, but very rural with lovely views. We would highly recommend The Swan Pub in the village. Everything was perfect.

Rated by Mrs Dyball reviewed on 19th November 2012

The owner was fabulous and gave us choices as to how we were looked after, she did a brilliant job.

Rated by Mr Nixon reviewed on 26th July 2012

The facilities at the cottage were excellent, and very comfortable. The owners gave an excellent standard of customer service. It was only a short drive to the local Sainsbury's and post office, and Hadrian's Wall was really close as was the centre of Newcastle. It was fantastic!
