Porthmadog sits on the Glaslyn Estuary and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is possible to travel by steam through the breathtaking scenery of Eryri (Snowdonia) to Blaenau Ffestiniog or Caerforn from Porthmadog, the entrance to the Snowdonia National Park. Porthmadog also has a number of unique shops and restaurants. Borth Y Gest, a charming seaside village with cliffs and coves, is only a short drive or walk away. It's only a short drive from here to Portmeirion, the world-famous Italianate seaside resort. Portmeirion, the setting for The Prisoner and the final episode of Cold Feet, sits on a rugged clifftop on its own private peninsula surrounded by miles of sandy beaches and woodlands. Criccieth and Harlech castles, as well as unspoilt beaches such as Black Rock Sands, can also be found in the area. Zip World Slate Caverns and Bounce Below are also nearby and offer a variety of activities for the whole family, including thrilling zip lines and exploration of underground caverns. The Eryri (Snowdonia) and Lleyn Peninsula attractions are easily accessible from here.
Famous for its choirs, stunning mountain ranges and beautiful valleys, this wonderful country has something for everyone. From Snowdonia in North Wales to the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast in the South.
The description on Sykes' website says: "Range with electric oven and gas hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher." Reading that description it seems as though the freezer is in the kitchen with the rest of the equipment listed. This is not the case. The freezer is a small mini freezer located inaccessibly under a rickety table in the garage. The garage is accessed from the back garden up two lots of stairs. At night, the part of the garden nearest to the garage is particularly dark, requiring a torch to see the lock and to navigate the stairs. When we arrived the freezer was not switched on. There are instructions to turn both fridge and freezer off when you leave which is not something we have encountered before. It is particularly unfair to the next visitors to have to wait for the fridge & freezer to work correctly, particularly annoying if you've been shopping before reaching the property! Thank goodness we didn't arrive with any frozen food as it would not have fitted in the tiny freezer. We bought one frozen product during our stay but it never seemed to freeze properly. The property was clean upstairs, however downstairs was a bit grubbier. The lounge/diner didn't seem as though it had been cleaned. There was a large build-up of dust, debris and dog hair under the sofas (found when a coin rolled under there). The table area hadn't been cleaned since the last occupants - lots of debris from previous meals. The front windows have a view to the estuary further down the road which is lovely, but the windows inside and out were filthy with smears and marks from dogs' noses. It's been a very long time since we've stayed in a property and haven't even been left a pint of milk. There isn't a shop in the village (which we already knew) so a trip back into Porthmadog was required to even have a cup of tea after a long journey. The wi-fi doesn't reach the back bedroom. There was only one hand towel for everyone for a week. There are only two mirrors upstairs - in the bathroom and the master which we found limiting when everyone's getting ready at the same time. Neighbours on one side really seem to dislike having holidaymakers next door. Surly, and petulant when it comes to parking. We have visited Borth-y-Gest for 30 years and know parking is an issue. We always parked responsibly, even parking away from the property on most occasions but it made no difference. Not having a blind at the bathroom window is weird when the second bedroom looks onto it. Anyone on the toilet can be seen (yes, even though it's frosted it's still not enough.) There looked to have been one previously, but perhaps it was broken and not replaced. Sykes' were approached particularly about the description of the freezer. Their response was that as long as an amenity is listed it means it is in the property somewhere. However, they also list the contents of the garage but do not include the freezer, which is bizarre. And why they can't just make it clearer for the benefit of visitors is baffling. What difference would it make to them? On our return, the owner was approached via Sykes but has chosen not to respond to any issues. We were not complaining, per se, but hoping to make a good property even better. Overall, the property is very nice, but feel as though the owner is penny-pinching in places.
