Arbroath was once a harbour, although it did not become a town until Arbroath Abbey was established in 1178. After then, the Abbey was dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket in 1197, and it now bears his name. In 1320, the renowned Declaration of Arbroath, which called for Scottish independence, was signed there. Through the flax and jute industries, as well as fishing, Arbroath's impact rose during the succeeding years, especially during the Industrial Revolution. By the 20th century, the town was home to one of Scotland's greatest fishing ports. The Arbroath Smokie, which features haddock that is customarily salted overnight, dried, and then smoked over a hardwood fire, is also well-known for its lengthy sandy beaches. Around the harbour, there are a number of historic smokehouses, many of which are worth visiting, as well as top-notch establishments for exquisite dining. There are many attractions and activities in and around this delightful coastal town, including plenty of coastal walking and cycling, golf courses, and Carnoustie, which is only 8 miles along the coast.
