Swanage is a small, family-friendly beach village on the legendary Isle of Purbeck, at the eastern extremity of Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast. It is best known for its magnificent, gently shelving golden dunes. The little town has a variety of stores, taverns, and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, and is well-known for its annual jazz festival, which takes place in July. The charming Victorian wooden pier is a terrific spot to take a stroll or try fishing, and it's also a nice site to see the world go by, as it's frequently used as a launching point for divers. The ancient Swanage Railway has its terminal in the town, and frequent nostalgic steam engine journeys take tourists on a scenic 6-mile journey through gorgeous countryside, stopping just past Corfe Castle's romantic ruin. Durlston Country Park, located nearby, provides a pleasant day out with excellent coastline walks, dolphin spotting, and animal viewing, as well as comfortable observation places and a well-stocked cafe for a treat after all the fresh air. Take a short drive to Studland, which boasts one of the best beaches in the country and is bordered by heathland, and then take the frequent chain ferry to Sandbanks across the mouth of Poole Harbour. At any time of year, this is a wonderful vacation spot.
