Barnard Castle is a market town in County Durham, set amid the unspoiled scenery of Teesdale. It is built on the site of an ancient Roman fort that had stood on the other side of the river. The castle's ancient remnants still rise over the river and are well worth seeing. Residents and visitors alike refer to the town as 'Barney,' because of its cobblestone streets, yards, and back roads, which were first set up in the 12th century. The neighbouring Bowes Museum is definitely worth a visit and a great way to spend a day roaming about this lovely building and taking in the fascinating exhibits.
Rich with fascinating historical sights and rolling countryside, experience Durham's breath-taking views from its position atop a craggy hill. From the iconic Romanesque Cathedral and 11th century Durham Castle nestled in the centre of town, to its sleepy
Arrived Friday 12th June for my hen do weekend with the girls. Staff were lovely and helpful, let us check in early because it was ready. All unpacked sorted no problems. Then it went wrong… 1 toilet was blocked so asked reception 3/4 times for someone to come and take a look at it. Nobody ever came. 2 of the bedrooms have a spiral stairs in, need curtains on all of the windows as they don’t and obviously wake up early 1st shower the water pressure was shocking it literally just dripped. 2nd shower brilliant pressure but boiling hot. 3rd shower brilliant pressure but stone cold. 4th and final shower brilliant pressure, brilliant temperature but didn’t drain so one of my guests took a look and pulled out so much hair and gunk while trying not to be sick. Wobbly taps. Floors very dusty, dead spiders on window sills, lots of cobwebs. Oven didn’t work. Heating on full blast so we’re melting for a while. We asked reception for some more dishwasher tablets so we didn’t leave any dirty pots, we asked no lie 8 times!!! Reception were very rude and attitude towards one of my guests with lots of eye rolling. ‘Yes, you have asked and housekeeping will bring you some’ after 12 hours we still had none so I went in after a lovely meal out all dressed up in my bride gear and they sent someone to the shop for some as it turned out they didn’t have any left. If that was the problem from the start they should have said, not wait for later shift staff to have to go out. The hot tub- beautiful clean very happy with it. By the second day it wasn’t as clean so thought someone would have come to check on it, add more chemicals as you are supposed to do daily. Didn’t even have a net to fish bits out with. Having said all this we really did enjoy our stay and i would return if it was cleaner and showers worked. I would just bring my own dishwasher tablets next time.
