Location Details

Referred to as the capital of the Marshwood Vale, Whitchurch Canonicorum is an attractive mix of farms and cottages. Whitchurch Canonicorum is where you can find the very ancient church of St. Candida and the Holy Cross. It is unique in being the only parish church in England to contain the remains of an ancient saint. There is a well nearby, also named after the Saint, which is also rumoured to have similar healing properties. The attractive market town of Bridport grew up around the River Brit and was shaped by its extensive history of rope and net making. The long, wide streets and alleyways between the houses were once where the flax strands were twisted into rope, while today those streets are filled with an interesting variety of shops, restaurants and inns.

Reviews

Very poorly maintained and owned by an unbelievably rude woman. It could be beautiful if properly updated/refurbished. Very pretty, quiet location.

This very ancient and beautiful cottage has been sadly neglected. Access to the front door was perilous - just stones embedded in the earth on a slope that was slippery. A large box full of empty bottles greeted us as we drove in. The cottage had peeling paintwork everywhere. Inside, one window was held together with tape! The dishwasher was not working, the stairs were dangerous as there is no handrail, and the bedroom window would not close - the woodwork was rotten. The garden was uncared for and overgrown, apart from the lawn which had had a brief mow. The cottage was dirty. The bathroom sink stand was stained, as were the skirting boards around the toilet. It was cold, despite the radiators coming on in fits and starts and some did not work at all. On the plus side, a lovely location, next to the church. Many footpaths to explore. But the state of the house made for a depressing stay. Please, whoever owns this historic gem, spend some money on it. It deserves to be looked after and preserved properly. Very expensive considering the neglect and what we paid for a three-night stay.
