The charming village of Cupar is located in the historic county of Fife, surrounded by undulating hills and situated beside the gurgling River Eden. The Hill of Tarvit, an Edwardian mansion that is worth a visit, is one of the ancient buildings that still has much of its original mediaeval flavour. The mansion, which the National Trust for Scotland has owned since 1949, is home to a substantial collection of Chippendale and French furniture from the 18th century, as well as Chinese ceramics and magnificent Dutch paintings. With 13 different species of deer from all over the world, Fife's lone wolf pack, otters, and other uncommon Scottish breeds, the neighbouring Scottish Deer Centre is spread out over 55 acres of greenery. The park is quite stunning, and it's a great place to spend the day with guided tours, woodland hikes, nose-to-nose encounters, and birds of prey shows, among many other activities. Fife Zoo, Mount Hill for walking, and Norman's Law are all easily accessible. It is around 9 miles to St. Andrews, the location of the St Andrew's Links golf course and the University of St. Andrew's, the oldest university in Scotland.
I stayed here as part of a group of 2 couples for a week and we chose it for the excellent location, which was in a very quiet street with gardens front and back, a drive easily long enough for both our cars and easy access to a riverside path which took us into the centre of town in less than 10 minutes. We all loved the location and the peace and quiet here, however we were disappointed with the rather uncomfortable furniture in the house. There is only a dated couch and chair in the lounge so I ended up sitting on a dining chair with a cushion on it as it's not relaxing having 3 adults on a couch together! The double bed is small with a thin mattress and the twin beds are more suited to children. There are a few scruffy looking rugs that we just put in a pile in the corner of a room. The kitchen is very dated and has a cupboard that protrudes, a fridge freezer that opens on the wall side, very basic cheap looking crockery and cutlery and no useful things such as wash up liquid, dish cloth etc. The shower room is more modern with a decent walk in shower with mats and is very clean. However, 1 hand towel between 4 seemed stingy. We've stayed in some beautifully appointed rental homes in the past and felt that this one suffers from a lack of investment despite it being around £600 on average a week during the summer. I would definitely return to this area, and would consider this property again if it was made more homely and comfortable as my back couldn't take another week in that bed and dining chair.
