The village, named An Port Rua in Irish meaning 'the red port', is close to the shores of Lough Derg and has a selection of nearby attractions including Castlelough Forest and Garrykennedy Castle Harbour. Dining options include the Seymour James village pub and Larkins restaurant on Garrykennedy Harbour, while you can stock up at the local convenience store. Within easy reach of Portroe is the historic town of Nenagh where you can find further attractions and amenities such as Nenagh Castle, Nenagh Heritage Centre, a cinema, and supermarkets.
