Approximately 3 miles from Tarporley and 12 miles southeast of Chester is the community of Bunbury, which is located at the western border of the Cheshire Plain. Although little is known about its history before the Norman conquest, it is generally agreed that the name is Saxon in origin. It is also believed that the current parish church's location was the location of a Christian place of worship well before 1066.
