Location Details
Hayfield, a charming village in the High Peaks, sits in a beautiful rural setting on the park's northwest border. This quiet town draws hikers thanks to its proximity to Kinder Scout. Families (and those who enjoy more gentle rambles) can be found heading west along the beautiful Sett Valley Trail towards New Mills, while serious walkers head east out of the village, up and over the green foothills to the russet expanse of the Kinder Plateau, Pennine Way, and Snake Path. A few miles away is Edale, which serves as a starting point for the Pennine Way. There are plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants in the village to satisfy visitors. Castleton, home to the world-famous Peak District caverns, and the posh spa town of Buxton are also within easy driving distance.

We enjoyed our stay at Howard’s retreat - the location is perfect for accessing many walking routes without having to go out in the car and also for some great local pubs and restaurants. However, there are a few things that could make Howard’s Retreat better: Positives: - great location - highly recommend the Italian restaurant Colosseo, The Pack Horse and The Sportsman (all walking distance) - good amount of space for two people - great facilities in Howard’s Retreat having the fully equipped kitchen Negatives: - the whole place needs a deep clean as some areas like the window sills, kitchen floor and bathroom floor were dirty. - there is a strange smokey smell to the whole place - the sofa has a strong musty smell which isn’t very pleasant - bedding and towels could do with replacing. The sheet had holes in it. - mattresses are old and you can feel every spring. We used the duvet off the other bed as a mattress topper which made it a bit more comfortable. It’s also worth letting people know about the local church bells which can be heard all through the night - so if a light sleeper consider ear plugs! With these few updates I feel this could be a really great place to stay in the Peak District!
