This market town defines the saying "good things come in small packages" as it proves itself to be a wonderful place for tourists to stay. Chipping Campden sits in the northern part of the Cotswolds and boasts many historical buildings from St. James' church where the Chipping Camden Music Festival is held every year, to the early 17th century market hall upon which the town prides itself. Not only does the town have a rich history but much more, the high street is laced with charming Cotswold stone buildings with a range of shops and pubs. Nearby there are several beautiful, formal gardens for you to wander through. Chipping Campden has held its own 'Olimpick Games' since the early 1600s including peculiar sports such as 'shin-kicking', most certainly worth lining your holiday up with to experience something so unique. For a dose of famous history, head to the birthplace of William Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon just 12 short miles away, it offers some charming little buildings, bookshops, theatres and museums.
Visitors to the Cotswolds have long treasured memories of charming towns and villages built from the famous honey-coloured stone, it now boasts a thriving community of contemporary artists working from studios and shops throughout the area.
We visited the Cotswolds with our small children and stayed at The Cottage. The first thing that hit us on arrival was the damp smell of the cottage. The smell was overwhelming and every room was affected. The kitchen wall was literally crumbling away. The mattresses were in a terrible state, covered in yellow stains and were clearly many years old (I searched for bedbugs they were that bad). Pretty much everything in the cottage was broken or in disrepair, it felt like no care had been taken at all. The en-suite shower was ridden with mould and dirt and honestly I’m just thankful we had good weather because all we did at the cottage was sleep. We contacted the owner and Sykes Cottage during our stay to discuss our issues and we were given a partial refund after many, many conversations. We were actually told we would get all our money back but for unknown reasons this offer was then rescinded. My husband took the time to speak to the owner outside the cottage and the most insulting thing is that she implied guests regularly requested a refund after they’ve stayed at her cottage to get a freebie! Honestly, if that many people complain about the cottage, maybe you’re the problem? She also said if it was that bad why didn’t we leave? We had spent 5 hours travelling with a 3 and a 5 year old in the summer holidays, 1) how can I explain we’re going home and 2) how did we have any hope in august of finding other accommodation? Shame on you. Please avoid this place we are not the first to complain and in its current state, we won’t be the last.
