Location Details

A thriving village on the southern edge of the wonderful Forest of Dean with an excellent pub and village shop offering many lovely walks and cycle routes in all directions. The RSPB Nagshead Reserve is home to many rare woodland birds and offers interesting events for all ages throughout the year. The magnificent Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasts numerous trails that can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. Caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course are for the more adventurous, whilst fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing are other popular activities in this unspoilt area. The eerie caverns and ancient caves of Clearwell are close by, as are the Gloucestershire Way and Offa's Dyke Path. Close by, Symonds Yat boasts natural scenery and straddles the beautiful River Wye with its magnificent limestone 'rock', popular with climbers, and well-known for its viewpoint. Visit the historic town of Monmouth with its mixture of elegant Georgian mansions and Victorian courtyards, or the lovely town of Ross-on-Wye with its timbered Tudor houses and delightful riverside walks, both offering excellent shops, pubs and restaurants. The unspoilt Malvern Hills, Brecon Beacons National Park and Black Mountains, as well as lovely Cotswold towns and villages are just a little further afield.

Herefordshire offers visitors the chance to journey through lush green countryside, enjoying splendid black-and-white timbered villages, a magnificent cathedral city, a fairytale Georgian castle at Eastnor or books galore in famous Hay-on-Wye.

Reviews

The Annexe is behind the shop that also belongs to the owner, and the outside yard of the Annexe is used by the shop staff when they take their smoking breaks, which means the space is definitely not private. The drive at the side is used for the shop deliveries and we were told they started between 1.30 and 2.30am. If you come by car, you can use the drive to unload which is very tight, but then you have to find somewhere to park outside the shop on a very busy road with only a few places to park. The gate to the shops drive must be kept shut as sheep and wild boar wander about. I wouldn't call the outside space child or dog friendly as it was littered with pallets, an old fridge freezer, cages, bread trays, gas cylinders and many other dangerous items. The Annexe itself was very luxurious, decorated to a exceptional standard and everything you could want. We didn't stay because of the lack of privacy and the state of the yard, it would have been to dangerous to allow our dog in the yard. None of the above was mentioned on the sykes site for this Holiday let. Sykes didn't want to find us another property, because it was the outside not the inside that was the problem, but we argued that they were responsible for both, and the private space was not private at all. Sykes did relent in the end and we did move to a fantastic property in Welland but for a shorter stay because it was more expensive. We ended up booking another 7 nights because it was so fantastic and the prices were reduced. If you want a really luxurious Holiday let for a couple who don't care about outside space, sharing it with shop workers smoking outside the property and possibly being disturbed in the middle of the night by deliveries and also finding it difficult to park if you have a car then it's fine. If you have a dog, a child or expect a private space then this really is not for you.
