The bustling fishing village of Burtonport is on Ireland's north west coast. From here you can catch a ferry to Arranmore or Rutland Island, for a fun day trip, or make the short journey to Dungloe, home of the famous 'Mary from Dungloe' festival, an annual event not to be missed. In the surrounding towns and villages there are several traditional music and family festivals throughout the calendar year. Burtonport and its surrounding areas are ideal for lovers of fishing; try sea fishing in Burtonport, catch a charter boat out to sea and try your hand at deep sea fishing, or make the most of one of the 130 lakes or rivers this area has to offer. Those who love golf can delight in the many courses in the area, while nature lovers can try and spot wildlife in the bogs and reed beds, plus mountaineering and mountain climbing can be enjoyed nearby. No matter what you love to enjoy, Burtonport is a great base.
The West of Ireland conjures up many images; thatched, whitewashed cottages, a flock of sheep on a narrow road, an emerald green field with a stone wall, or the Atlantic waves crashing into towering cliffs and rocky shores.

I recently enjoyed a delightful stay at the Wheelhouse Glamping Pods in Burtonport, Donegal. The pods are not only spacious and well-equipped with a kitchen, shower, and toilet, but also incredibly cost-effective. This allowed us to prepare our own breakfast and supper with ease, while we chose to enjoy our lunch and dinner out, taking advantage of the local dining options. Despite the chill of the winter months, the interior was cozy and warm, thanks to the efficient heater. The Wheelhouse Restaurant is just a short walk away, where the staff are exceptionally friendly and adept at accommodating dietary needs, including those with swallowing difficulties, with a varied menu catering to all palates. The facility also offers plenty of parking, and is conveniently situated a mere 5 minutes from the ferry to the stunning Arranmore Island. The owner's warm hospitality and the ongoing efforts to improve accessibility with new ramps are commendable. The serene surroundings made for a peaceful getaway, and the person I supported relished the comfort so much that they slept in until just before 10 am every morning. The comfort of the beds, the good reception for TV and mobile phone, and the wheelchair-friendly amenities all added to the positive experience. My only suggestion would be to offer handheld showerheads for those who prefer it, though this is a very minor point. Five stars for the Wheelhouse Glamping Pods – we relished our stay and will certainly return!
