Sheldon 0.5 miles. A real rustic retreat! An atmospheric log cabin in a valley on the edge of peaceful woodland, within the grounds of the owner's trout farm, half a mile from the picturesque hamlet of Sheldon, and 7 miles from Honiton. Situated within the Blackdown Hills, and made from weathered pine logs, this unusual holiday home has an open plan living area, a woodburner in a large inglenook fireplace, and a covered veranda ideal for an evening drink and BBQ. Walk the woods and country lanes in peace, explore the region's beautiful countryside and visitor attractions, or fish in the nearby lake and enjoy grilled trout for supper on the veranda, before being lulled to sleep by the sound of running water. It's the perfect country escape.
The Hills are a nationally important landscape and were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in recognition of the special qualities of its natural and built environment. Being relatively unspoilt, the Hills offer a rare sense of timelessness. A network of hedges, mature hedgerow trees and small copses link a rich mosaic of semi-natural habitats. The area is perfect for walks, cycling and horse riding where the quiet bridleways and byways offer many opportunities to explore and enjoy the locally distinctive buildings, archaeological remains and natural flora and fauna. Sheldon is centrally located to explore attractions further away, such as the City of Exeter with its ancient Cathedral, High Street shopping and arts centres. Historic Honiton is also nearby, giving you a chance to find out more about the honey exports that gave the town its name and, a few miles south, you'll find the unspoilt beaches of Exmouth and the rest of the Jurassic Coast.

Devon, with its quiet country lanes, patchwork of lush green fields and sleepy villages is not to be missed. Stately home lovers will be spoiled and why not finish with a scrumptious Devonshire cream tea?
This truly is a cabin made from logs! The dogs loved the freedom of the forest and we loved the freedom from wi-fi and mobile phones. It's an idyllic setting and how lovely to wake up to see a buzzard perched close by, squirrels scurrying past and to be lulled to sleep by the hooting of owls. The wood burner in the vast inglenook fireplace dooms warms the cabin up. A good selection of maps and guides helped us plan our days. And we did park right by the cabin without any mishaps. A very relaxing birthday break. Hazel P.
The Cabin is wonderfully isolated with everything you could need for a relaxing base in a beautiful area of the country. It is rustic and the grounds of the trout farm in which it is located are fabulous, with lots of grass areas for playing, access to the woods for exploring and no ambient light for star gazing! It is close enough to the main motorway to mean getting out and about is easy. A wonderful array of books, DVD's and magazines provided plenty of evening entertainment and the outdoor furniture and BBQ meant we could indulge in "out" as much as possible for meals.
A perfect setting for a great fly-fishing holiday; it was everything we could possibly want and more; a fabulous easily accessible trout lake in superb surroundings. A comfortable cabin with ample space for fishing kit under veranda, also there's a great local eatery and well equipped shop.
What a great place! Hidden away, and nice and quiet. Hiking in the woods and fishing were great, and the owners were very kind. Look forward to return visits.
The setting was fabulous. We were able to just leave our cabin and walk through the woods behind us on a crazy wood adventure following the stream that led us to sheldon woods. We also loved the basicness of it and we really enjoyed the log fire and the whole back to nature feel. The owner was very friendly but left us to it. It was nice to not have any signal and just escape without the kids and just enjoy doing very little. I think anyone that visits here needs at least two nights as it takes a night and a day to fully appreciate the simplicity of the cabin. This is a superb place for dog walking and kids as the exploring we did was fantastic. We will visit again when the kids are a little older and they can explore the woods and stream safely.
On arrival it was pouring with rain and we were told by owner we couldn't park next to lodge because of weather, we were eventually told no one is ever whatever the weather allowed to park by it as all men drivers are irresponsible and would drive on grass and land their car in the ditch. This ruined our holiday as we had to walk up a lane with all our belongings when we unpacked car. Every time we went out we got wet, dirty and cold. The lodge is lovely, but the inside needs a complete make over. The sofas are very flat and uncomfortable and also smelled of body odour and the single beds were very old and you could feel every coil spring. The electric would cut out if you turned the back right ring on, and unfortunately it could do with a good clean. I'm sure it was amazing when it was first built and decorated, but not now
Wonderful accommodation and scenery, very friendly owners. Just outstanding!
Another fabulous holiday here, excellent for exploring the forest. Clean, quiet retreat - bliss! Will be returning again next year.
We loved the location and the tranquillity, particularly some decent wildlife viewing! It's a great place to have as a base for exploring Devon.
The location and immediate surroundings. The owner was friendly & knowledgeable about all the birds & wildlife in the vicinity. We were left to our own devices but there was help at hand if we sought it.
We booked this log cabin to enable my husband to fish for a couple of days, do some coastal path walking and to relax by a "real" fire. We achieved all this and more!! It is very quiet as location is very rural! There were a couple of small negatives. There was no information book so we had no idea of the nearest shop or garage; no instructions for the cooker or TV (handset missing); no idea where best to eat etc. This could be easily rectified. One of the frying pans had a handle missing and the other frying pan had a lot of the non stick coating missing; no collander provided. As we mostly ate in, this was only a slight problem. The owner kindly provided a large bin of logs for the woodburner and then you could buy a bag of logs for £4. We had our dogs with us so took chair throws and throws for the carpet!! There were two 2-seater settees which were ok in comfort level. The double bed was very soft but i cannot comment on the bunk beds. There is a heater in every room so the cabin was always warm. You need to put lights on in the lounge as it is quite dark. As we had dogs, we were able to let them run in the small copse behind the log cabin which was helpful as there were no footpaths except the narrow road leading to the trout farm. All in all a very enjoyable week. We would not hesitate in staying there again.
We had a lovely stay in The Cabin. We wanted a quiet weekend away from the world and that's what we got. It was in lovely peaceful surroundings and the log burner was lush! The shower was lovely too.
We have just arrived back home after a week away in this beautiful log cabin in Sheldon. The owners were so accommodating. Our dog could run around in a safe environment and he very much enjoyed it. The owners gave us a starter pack for the log burner which was fantastic. The photo's on the website do not do this log cabin any justice. The living area was lovely and cosy and the kitchen adequate for the four of us that stayed. The shower was heaven and very clean, as was the whole cabin. We didn't use the fishing facilities but this didn't matter as the facilities were there if we wanted to use them. We were lucky enough to have snow whilst we were there and it looked so beautiful. Will definitely book again and look forward to returning soon.
The Log Cabin is a very cosy secluded break. Comfortable with great owner.
Log Cabin in need of an overhaul, cramped kitchen for cooking, and poor white goods. View only from door or veranda and not inspiring. Sofa and beds uncomfortable poor illumination throughout. Not impressed. Single steep winding track down to trout farm uninviting. Only plus point good base for exploring area. Will not be returning.
The peace and quiet was lovely with wonderful walks in the woods.
Very nice place and left to ourselves, However owner on hand if we needed anything.
We had a great time me my wife and the dog nice and quiet peaceful great base to tour from the farmer was great
This holiday was a complete break away from everything. The Log Cabin is in a very isolated spot which is perfect if you want peace and quiet. The surroundings were fabulous and you can just sit and enjoy the tranquillity. There are loads of dog walks around the property. For a complete break away from the stresses and strains of modern life I can't recommend it high enough.
The location of the cabin was fantastic, especially with our two very large dogs! The forest behind the cabin made great walks for us and the dogs, very peaceful and quiet. If it's relaxation, peace and quiet you are seeking, then this is the place for you.
The setting of the cabin was more than expected. Even though the owner was close by we were left to our selves which is what we wanted.
This property ticked every box for me, it is a simple place for those who enjoy a simple quiet life. The location was exactly what I wanted and wished for; secluded, close to nature, quiet, a place to contemplate the important things in life and enjoy it.
The heat wave for the entire time at Sheldon obviously helped but this ranks as my favourite rental. Mega chill out - watching the local chickens amble about and the trout leaping in the nearby fish ponds. A few fishermen in the distance and that's it - you couldn't ask for a more relaxing location. The cabin itself is comfy and well equipped with all the basics you need and it doesn't look like a Country Living magazine copy (which is a real bonus for me!!). Really comfortable bed and a Devon cream tea waiting for you when you arrive! Nearby Honiton is lovely with a good range of local shops and markets and the a30 gives easy access to the rest of Devon and Dorset. All in all a fab place - we loved it and will definitely be going back
I can now see why its always booked up in advance! The owner was very pleasant and helpful. The log fire was also a lovely feature in the living room.
This was such a comfortable cabin, and friendly owners, with such beautiful surroundings for walking as well as just sitting watching the fishermen and listening to the birds. Spotted so many wild flowers I hadn't seen for ages, glad I took my reference book. We've recommended it to friends one couple have already booked it. Great for the 'Stop the world I need to get off'
The cabin looked beautiful and the woods was amazing to walk through. Tourist places are close by and the town of Honnington has lots of antique shops with some good finds.
This was totally what it said on the tin, lovely peaceful and quiet. Beautiful area, lovely people that run it and the surroundings were equally lovely. The cabin was very comfy and cosy for an evening and the bed was equally comfy.
Quiet location so able to relax and unwind. Helpful owners. Nearby fishing lake.
What a lovely little place, beautiful grounds, great for pets, log burner perfect in the autumn & winter. It's a great area as well for walks and wildlife. We will definitely come back, the owners were so helpful when we had a flat tyre, even though their grounds had flooded with the recent November rain.
Very friendly owners who could not do enough to ensure our stay was good. Wonderful views from all the windows of the lodge. Very peaceful and relaxing. Loved every minute we were there. Kitchen had everything we needed. Lodge was cosy and warm when cold outside. Location was good for all nearby towns and villages and exploring. Will go back soon. Thankyou.
Beautiful, secluded and quiet surroundings. We walked everyday with the dog and the children loved the woods. We will definitely be returning!
We had a truly fantastic time at The Log Cabin. The owners are really great and friendly and make your stay wonderful. The Log Cabin is very well equipped for your stay and the peace and quiet and wonderful views of the pools are outstanding. Will be visiting again. Thank you.
Location, views, peace and quiet. Owners terrific and friendly. Felt comfortable with The Log Cabin. c
The scenery from the top of the driveway hill was excellent. A really beautiful area. Lovely relaxing cabin - peaceful.
We enjoyed the solitude of our stay.
It was really peaceful, a nice get away from everything - the dog loved it! There were scones in the fridge when we arrived :) I will definitely visit again :) we had the best time. The photos on the website don't show the best features.
The woods, the peace, the quiet and the dogs had so much freedom.
The isolation! We hardly saw any one all week. It was so quiet I could've spent more time there; just me and my wife and the dogs. All together it was my idea of heaven. A great holiday. The cottage was set up for people with dogs. All together a wonderful time was had by all.
Fantastic location literally in the middle of nowhere but close to loads of different places. The lodge was great, and the view from the veranda is stunning and the visting peacock kept the dog amused! Kids and dog loved it. Couldn't fault it. The people are really lovely and very helpful, and the freshly laid eggs were very tasty. Would highly recommend.
If you want somewhere quiet and peaceful this is the place for you.
Peace and quiet and the friendliness of the owners.
The property was fantastic. Great freedom for the dog - we loved it!
We enjoyed the peaceful tranquility, the sound of moving water, the lovely cream tea on arrival and the comfy double bed.
The cream tea provided by the owners was appreciated after a long journey and was a nice welcome. The peace and quiet was wonderful. It was good that the owners left us to our own devices but were available if needed.
We had a great time. The owners are nice people and very helpful. There were so many places to visit and we just ran out of time. 5stars A+++ we will be back next year thats for sure.
This was our second stay at the Log Cabin and we loved every minute. The cabin is cosy and the setting so peaceful. Perfect for a break from everything. Back next year!
The owners were really helpful as we got snowed in! Lovely cabin in beautiful woodland, would definitely go there again.
Peace and quiet, the owners were there if you needed them but did not intrude on our holiday, very nice couple.
The rural setting, the grounds, fishing ponds, and surrounding forest. The log cabin itself is really cosy and the owners are friendly and helpful.
This was our first time in log cabin.Very seculded spot, dog loved his freedom to roam on the long grass area, outside the cabin. Wonderful views from log cabin of fishing pools, and mountains. In a valley surrounded by woods. Lots of walking areas nearby and interesting old villages e.g Broadbenbury only short distance in vehicle with its thatched roof cottages very picturesque. Honiton is a lovley one street town with market stalls on the road side twice weekly. Cabin was spacious and comfortable with an outside porch area which we had our barbecues on.
Quiet location, away from it all. The property allowed us to bring our dogs.
The position and solitude of the cabin. The rustic yet totally acceptable accommodation. The cabin was better than I expected. The owners were patient teachers of fly-fishing when faced with a city girl to teach.
We had an excellent stay at the log cabin. The owners were very welcoming on arrival and were very helpful.
The setting and surroundings were really nice. The Log Cabin was very homely.
Completely out of the way and peaceful, with Dartmoor and Exmoor on the doorstep. The place is naturally freezing in winter, but once the wood burner is roaring away it's snug as you like. The owners are a smashing couple and I dare say if I was into fishing and it was summer, I'd have liked their trout fishery too.
It was lovely and secluded. The cabin was really cosy and clean and we had a really relaxing time. The cream tea in the fridge for us when we arrived was a lovely touch.
The service we received was very good, the cabin was lovely but.....the furniture left a lot to be desired, very cheap, very low and very uncomfortable. we could not relax very well in the evenings. Otherwise it was great, a beautiful location Liked best...Devon. Liked least....that bloomin settee. Liam Bennett
Very remote, beautiful surroundings, nice touch to have scones on arrival and the pre order of champagne on ice very organised.
The site is really nice. The welcome was warm and friendly and the owners did everything to make it a nice holiday.
The peace and quiet, and being away from it all. A very tranquil setting!
The wonderful, remote location - especially having the opportunity to be amongst the real farming community of Devon. The wood-burning stove was most welcome and the complimentary Devon cream tea on arrival was a lovely, thoughtful touch.
We had a great week and enjoyed it very much.
The Cabin was set in a nice and secluded place, forestry all around, ideal for anyone with dogs. Owners were great, just left you to it and very helpful. All in all had a lovely time.
We loved every minute of our time there, the whole area was second to none. The dog loved it too and was just as sad to leave as we were.
It was a stress free break - we were left to get on with it. The log cabin was beautiful and exactly as you would hope for so it had a 'wow' factor when we arrived. The area is near some great places which would make me want to return for a longer break with children.
The area of Devon it was in. Great open space for the dogs.
The Cabin is in a lovely, secluded, peaceful location, and very cosy. The people were very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely go back there again.
We liked the quiet location, my son enjoyed the fishing and my dog loved it all.
The absolute peace and quiet. We could take our family dog, and the surroundings were perfect. The owners were friendly and accommodating and very pleasant. We enjoyed it so much we have already booked 2 weeks next year!
Enjoyed the peace, and the owner was very welcoming. The grounds were lovely, and lots to do within a short drive. We will book again in future, thank you.
Our experience at The Log Cabin was thoroughly enjoyable. The owners were incredibly helpful and attentive. Was in a great location. Highly recommended!
The owners were very kind, helpful and accommodating. We were made to feel very welcome.
Setting of cabin very good, very quiet and peaceful.
Tranquil, lovely countryside, friendly people, secure.
Nice and quite.
Peaceful, beautiful surroundings.
The owners were more than happy to help with any queries we had. Ten out of ten for the way they made our stay perfect. We hope to stay with one of your properties again.
The Log Cabin was in an ideal setting. It was peaceful and quiet, a real 'break away'. The hosts are so happy to help and were friendly and approachable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who likes to fish and wants to escape from everyone and everything for a few days. Brilliant weekend, just brilliant !
The Log Cabin was just what I needed, peace, quiet and solitude. The owners are very friendly and can't do enough to help you if you need them. I'll be back.
A lovely location, very peaceful. The owners were friendly and helpful. The dogs loved the woods and little streams. It was the perfect getaway location.
...Peace and quiet and friendly owners, nice walks for the dog.
It was excellent.
I liked the location; the seclusion and peacefulness.
Location is ideal for two adults and a dog. The surrounding woods are lovely and our dog enjoyed it thoroughly.
The surroundings are fantastic and the access to the fishing was an extra bonus.
Great place for the children (mind the lake!). Our dogs loved the woods.
The Log Cabin is an ideal get away from it all holiday. It is so relaxing, the surrounding woodlands are full of wild life and a squirrel likes to visit.
We loved our second stay at the log cabin. The setting is amazingly tranquil, the owners friendly and welcoming and the location perfect for visiting the many local attractions. The short journey to Branscombe beach and the whole Jurassic coast made the holiday great for myself, the children and even the dog. We can't wait to go back!
We have just used your company for the first time and would like to let you know how much we enjoyed our break. The log cabin was just how you described it in your brochure, it was one of the most relaxing breaks we have had, and the owners were marvellous. We will definately be using you again in the future. Thank you for an excellent service.
Stunning views from every window. Beautiful surroundings. Peaceful. Great woodland walks - didn't see a soul. Lots of wildlife. Inglenook fireplace with wood burner. Exactly what we were looking for.
The location of the Log Cabin was perfect, out of the way, peaceful etc. It was exactly what we needed. My husband enjoyed the fishing (caught his largest ever trout!). The owners were friendly and helpful. The Log burning stove/fire was great. The dog enjoyed his walks!
Local countryside was beautiful and the log cabin situated in a lovely spot with woodlands all around and a lovely lake to walk around, children enjoyed exploring in the woods. We received a warm welcome and the owners were really nice.
We had a brilliant time in the quiet surroundings. The peace and quiet was just what we needed. The owners were very helpful and friendly. All in all a week that seemed to last a month.
Had a great time. Owners were very welcoming. My dog (Rosie) thought the Forest behind the cabin was brilliant. Very safe area for dogs as not near any roads. Lovely and peaceful and very pretty area.
The owners are really helpful and friendly people and have obviously taken care in restoring the Log Cabin. Using the woodburning stove, it was really warm at night and the back up convector heating wasn't needed during the night. I loved being able to walk out of the door and into the woods, the Blackdown Hills and the wonderful wildlife on the doorstep. The lake was also a great hit with my dog, and the area was really quiet, we met absolutely no-one when walking in the forests. Its a great holiday for people who want peace, quiet and nature.
The woods to the rear of the cabin were a great source of adventure for the children. They loved the streams, hills and trails. Welly boots are a must!! The coarse lake was great for the 9 year old - he was able to catch 4 or 5 roach in an evening. For those warm evenings, sitting out on the grass with a glass of wine waiting for the BBQ - perfect
