Known as the 'Centre of Britain' this small market town is well served by a range of local shop and excellent pubs. There are 3 castles within a few miles of Haltwhistle; Blenkinsop and Bellister are ruins, but the 14th Century Thirlwall Castle is well-preserved and worth a visit. Five miles away is Housteads Roman Fort, the best preserved Roman camp on Hadrian's Wall. Nearby, the parish church of Holy Cross is ancient building, which may date to the 9th century, and within it is a preserved 7th century water stoup thought to have been used by St Paulinus. Haltwhistle was granted a royal charter to hold a market in 1306 and the market is still held today. The town prides itself on being 'The Centre of Britain' and it makes a fantastic location from which to explore Hadrian's Wall country.
Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
We've just spent a wonderful week at Crescent Cottage, Haltwhistle. The cottage was beautiful and we didn't want for anything. Sue, the owner, was very welcoming and gave us lots of useful information about the area and visitor attractions. Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum is well worth a visit and is only a short drive away. The train stn is a 5 min walk away with easy access to both Carlisle and Newcastle. Would definitely recommend Crescent Cottage and would love to come back again in the future.
We made our 6th visit to Crescent Cottage in August and had a lovely peaceful holiday, even the weather was with us this time. Perfect location for walks to Hadrian's Wall. Lots of good places in Haltwhistle and nearby to eat and drink. Always receive such a good welcome back from Sue & Nick.
Loved this quirky upside-down house, with its friendly hosts. It's a two minute walk into town, which has plenty of pubs (recommend the Black Bull) and eateries, and a two minute walk to Sainsbury. The two and a half mile walk along the Haltwhistle Burn is beautiful (and flat) and from there is a short walk across a field and down the road to 'Cawfields' where you can join the walk along Hadrian's wall (definitely not flat). The house is well equipped and very comfy, so we enjoyed relaxing evenings after our days out exploring.
Really enjoyed our week at Crescent Cottage. We had a warm week and the upside down cottage meant that the bedrooms were cooler and a good nights sleep assured in a bed with a great mattress. The cottage was immaculate and very well equipped. Lovely outdoor sitting area overlooking the owners pretty garden. The owners were very welcoming and there was a cake and some milk waiting for us. We will be back - we loved it!!!! Great walking at Hadrian's Wall with an excellent local bus service to several locations along the wall. Haltwhistle has a number of pubs and restaurants as well as local shops and a couple of Supermarkets.
Firstly Haltwhistle is a pleasant surprise with good shopping, eating and drinking facilities...in fact just about everything you could need with two supermarkets, pubs, food and takeaways. There is also a railway with a regular train service!! The area has gorgeous scenery with historical sites and towns and superb walking country. Hexham, a short drive to the east is well worth a visit with its abbey, theatre and larger shops. In all the cottage, Haltwhistle and the area make an excellent package and having sampled it we will be back for more.
Our stay in Crescent Cottage was fantastic. The owner was very warm and welcoming. The cottage was immaculate in every way & we will recommend it to everyone.
We have just returned from our 5th visit to stay at this lovely peaceful cottage. It is perfectly located for visits and walks along Hadrians Wall. We have always received a very warm welcome from Sue & Nick, who have a wealth of knowledge about the local area and places to visit, and recommendations on where to eat. This will certainly not be our last visit!!
Excellent location, very convenient for town, Hadrians Wall and beautiful Northumberland countryside. Very comfortable and spacious cottage. The patio area was lovely with views of the very pretty garden with lots of bird life. The owners next door were very warm and welcoming with lots of helpful tips and advice.
Simply can not fault the cottage and service of the owners. Spotless and exceedingly comfortable. We used the cottage as a base for walking Hadrian's wall and cycling. It's location was perfect. Lots of places to eat locally and plenty of shops to cater for yourself within walking distance. Yet it was an oasis of calm. Can't recommend highly enough. The Dewars of the Rogers and Dewar clans.
Crescent Cottage is situated in the centre of Haltwistle, which has everything you'll need, plus an excellent pub. The cottage is ideally placed for exploring Hadrian's Wall and is clean, quirky and full of character. The owners were very nice and gave us a warm welcome.
A fantastic cottage run by a very helpful and friendly host. Personally we felt the cottage was perfect for a holiday in the UK in November when the weather is cold and wet. Providing a washer and dryer made life so much more comfortable as we were out every day either mountain biking or walking. Also, even though the cottage is in the town it was so quiet.
This was a delightful and comfortable Cottage in a lovely location close to Hadrian's Wall and exactly as portrayed in the details.
Crescent Cottage is delightful. It has everything you need for a perfect break in Northumberland. The cottage is well equipped and furnished to a very high standard. All in all, Crescent Cottage is a wonderful place to stay.
Excellent accommodation and location.
The cottage was much bigger than it appeared on the outside. It was a really lovely bright, warm, comfortable place and really close to all amenities yet lovely and peaceful. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and provided loads of really useful information. The weather was fantastic over the Easter weekend which was a bonus and everywhere we went people were really helpful and friendly. The holiday was absolutely perfect.
The property was outstanding and the owner was very friendly. Probably the best cottage we have ever stayed in.
The owners were friendly and helpful, the cottage was comfy and felt like home from home
Sue and Nick gave us a very warm welcome and were very helpful. Nick told us a lot about Haltwhistle and surroundings. Sue baked us a delicious chocolat cake and there were fresh flowers in the living room of the cottage to welcome us! The cottage is very clean (we love that!) and had all the creatures comfort. Books to read and lots of leaflets with information about interesting places to visit are availlable in the cottage. All so well taken care of. A joy to stay in! Just around the corner there is a supermarket. In the cottage all you need to prepare a wonderful meal. And if you do not feel like cooking there are other possibilities nearby also for Take In Meals. Haltwhistle an ideal place to start exploring Hadrian's wall. A lot of very interesting places nearby. We had a wonderful time in Crescent Cottage!
Haltwhistle was an excellent centre to explore Hadrian's Wall and Crescent Cottage was an ideal base. Having the owners next door was an added bonus.
The location was great for seeing Hadrian's Wall sites. Plenty of shops in the village for everyday needs as well as takeaways. Good pub food at the Black Bull. The house was clean and comfortable, a real home-from-home. Easily the best holiday cottage we have stayed in. The owners were friendly and helpful.
Definitely the best rental property we have ever used. The house was immaculate but also very comfortable and cosy. Perfect for a family to enjoy. The garden was just lovely and the owner makes you feel very much at home. The village was also ideal for a holiday spot; very small but with two butchers, grocery stores, pubs so everything available and within walking distance. Beautiful spot in rural England that we would highly recommend to anyone!
I was unfortunate enough to be ill whilst on holiday this year. However, if one had to be ill on holiday Crescent Cottage was the place!! All the home comforts, always warm, in spite of windy, rainy weather. The owner, who lived next door could not have been more helpful. The location was great for seeing the Hadrian Wall sites and local buses and trains travelled from Carlisle to Newcastle via the town. Plenty of shops for everyday needs as well as many eating/takeaway places.
A lovely comfortable cottage in a great location, perfect for exploring Hadrian's Wall and the surrounding area. We were made very welcome by the owners who could not have been more helpful and charming. Good local amenities, plus a terrace overlooking a wonderful garden and lots of nice big sofas for relaxing in the evening! We would highly recommend Crescent Cottage and we hope to be going back as soon as we can escape again!
My family thought this was a lovely cottage to spend a week in. The upstairs living space was great - very comfortable and spacious. The village was nice with a decent pub, chippy and a supermarket close to the cottage. There was also indoor play area for the children on a rainy day. Hadrians wall was just a few minutes away by car - and we also enjoyed a day in Carlisle. We enjoyed meals at Twice Brewed and the Milecastle.
I've stayed in Crescent Cottage a number of times, usually with only my husband, but once with my parents and daughters. Each time I go back it feels like home from the first moment. It's really comfortable and clean, with a great kitchen with a drying rack - very useful if you've been out walking in the rain. There's a very pleasant view over the garden from the window. The cottage is right in the middle of Haltwhistle within easy walking distance of local pubs, takeaways, shops etc. It's a perfect base to explore the wonderful countryside and Hadrian's Wall. Totally recommended!
Centrally located for all local amenities but still private and peaceful. Easy parking!
Excellent property /location and facilities . Owner next door left cake and wine to welcome us . She was friendly but did not intrude . Plenty of room for 2 cars . Haltwhistle is pleasant and located well for walking -not just the Wall . Take the train to Carlisle and go round the castle etc . Good pubs, shops and sandwich bar in Haltwhistle . Eat out at Milecastle and Greenhead? hotel.
We used this cottage as a base to walk Hadrians Wall. The location was perfect. A short drive to the wall and Carlisle and walking distance to the pub and supermarket. The owners live next door and were friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. All in all good value and a fun stay.
We parked the car on the day we arrived and did not use it again until we went home. Great walking straight from the door to Hadrian's wall. We used the train to visit Newcastle and Carlisle. The cottage was warm and cosy. The town location was great, but it was very quiet. Shops, takeaways and pubs all just minutes walk away. We had a great week and would love to return.
Cottage was excellent, if you are thinking of booking it then do it before someone else does. Owner lives next door and was very pleasant and helpful without being obtrusive. The cottage is well furnished and very comfortable with parking for two large cars and a large garage.
We loved the warmth and cosiness of Crescent Cottage. The garden was delightful. The owners were welcoming and helpful. The cottage's location was excellent and unbelievably peaceful, despite being in the middle of a town. It was a pleasure to return 'home' there at the end of each day's sight-seeing.
A lovely, cosy cottage with easy access to fantastic walking.
On a walking weekend Friday to Monday, so had to stop at a B&B; Friday night. (Chare Close also very good) as the booking was Sat to Sat. The owners aranged with the B&B; to transer our luggage over on the Sat whilst we went walking. Cottage in the centre of Haltwhistle 3 mins walk to the town centre yet very quite. Would def. go back if ever in the area again.

It was a lovely cosy cottage.
We received a lovely, friendly welcome and the cottage was spotless. I would definitely recommend to friends and family, lovely holiday.
The house was lovely, the town had everything one could want (including 3 butchers ),good pub within 2 minutes walk. Would go back
Very convenient position, buses & trains a few minutes walk away. Helpful, friendly hosts; we really appreciated the fresh flowers, milk, & cake when we arrived. An extremely comfortable & cosy cottage which we look forward to visiting again.
We were given an excellent welcome by the owners. The cottage was warm, comfortable and spacious. The furnishings and décor were of a high quality. Secure bicycle storage and car parking was provided. There was lots of local information available in the house. Extensive collection of books and games for our use. The best self catering accommodation I have found. We have already recommended this cottage to our friends.
The cottage is situated very close to the town and two miles from Hadrian's Wall. The owner was extremely helpful but not intrusive. Haltwhistle is a great base for a holiday.
Warm and friendly welcome from the owners, lovely cottage, just a short walk from halt whistle station, Local shops, super public house serving good meals, excellent take away just down the road, what more could you want for a relaxing holiday, plenty of information to enjoy a walk along Hadrians wall. Would love to return in the future..
This was a traditional cottage which has been refurbished and modernised to a high standard. The garden is beautiful and well maintained with some unique features. The owners who live next door were very welcoming and helpfull but resepcted our privacy. Cant fault this cottage, nice local pubs for food, close to Hadrians Wall and some challenging local walks.
Could not fault anything. All excellent.
We had a very warm and friendly welcome, the cottage was perfect for our needs and we wanted for nothing. It was ideally suited both within the town and for exploring Northumberland
This was a great location for visiting Hadrian's Wall. The cottage was lovely and very well presented with a fantastic garden. The owners who lived next door were very attentive when required but left us to enjoy our privacy. A lovely village with a good local pub within walking distance. Would definitely return and recommend to friends.
Central location for walking Hadrian's Wall and visiting the North of England. The owner made us feel very welcome and provided maps for walking and cycling in the area with excellent hospitality and food at the Black Bull and Milecastle Inn. Excellent! 2 for 2 Sykes - keep up the good work!
The cottage was in a lovely location - perfect for Hadrian's wall and local attractions. So much to see and do. The owners made us welcome and gave us advice on local walks, attractions and amenities, they were on hand if we needed them, but left us alone to enjoy a peaceful week. We will return in the future.
We enjoyed the warmth of the local people and the friendly and available owners. The property was quiet and well equipped, a lovely base for our many visits in the area.
The location was lovely and the owners very friendly and welcoming. We would recommend this property to our friends and family. A very enjoyable holiday.
An excellent property in a great location with very helpful and kind owners. We could not have wished for a nicer property.
It was a very comfortable and well equipped cottage with a lot of period charm. The owners were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed using the private patio overlooking the owners gorgeous colourful walled garden. It was very handy having parking for two cars.
The house was perfect in every way. The place was well equipped and had everything we required. I would recommend it to anyone that was thinking of a holiday in Northumberland. We went there to walk the Hadrian's wall national trail and found that Haltwhistle was ideally placed with rail and bus links together with good food in the local pub.
Lovely warm and homely cottage. The owners very helpful and friendly. Within walking distance of Hadrian's Wall, great scenery and walks. Cottage was handy for the shops, pubs, and restaurants but in a quiet area.
Sykes staff were very helpful. The cottage was so warm and welcoming and had everything we could have wished for which impressed the Italians in our company. All was so very clean and made everyone feel quite at home, a great holiday.
The owner made us very welcome. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped. There were many leaflets about the area including several copies of various walks so that we could take these out with us. We had the use of a garage to store bikes.
The cottage was very spacious and comfortable. It was close to the supermarket and town centre, yet nice and quiet. The owners welcoming and helpful.
We stayed here for one week and can highly recommend this cottage. Great location, well equipped kitchen, tastefully decorated throughout , the spacious lounge is a real pleasure to use to chill out in. We would have no hesitation in saying to anyone - stay here
All four of us were thrilled with the cottage and the amenities provided by the hosts. The cake and flowers provided by the hosts were a nice touch and much appreciated. Walking Hadrian's Wall and the local history was initially the prime reason for choosing the cottage location and we all liked the little market town of Haltwhistle and surrounding towns very much and the locals were very friendly.
The house was very comfortable and well equipped with good quality furnishings and crockery. The patio area overlooked the owners beautiful garden. The owners lived next door and were very welcoming and helpful. They left scones and jam and milk for our arrival. This is one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in.
A very cosy cottage in an excellent location. It had good facilities for self catering and a good heating and hot water system.
Quiet relaxing cottage, comfortable and with easy reach of towns pubs and shops.
We received a very friendly welcome. The cottage was really comfortable. Haltwhistle is a friendly little town, well positioned for easy access to all attractions. Highly recommended!
We felt immediately at home, we use Sykes Cottages often and this is the star in their crown. We would love to go back!
The cottage is excellent, exactly placed to see the best of Hadrians Wall. Facilities were A1, and the chocolate cake was a personal touch that lasted all week. We would go back just for the cake!
Welcomed by owners which was nice as well as the cake and milk left for us. Lots of info on local services; good bus and train services. 'Black Bull' pub very good for food, atmosphere and very popular.
Very convenient for bus and rail travel. Shops, pubs and restaurants all within walking distance. Owner very helpful.
Apart from the overall excellent condition of the property, I found the location to be perfect. Easy access to the town centre and local pubs. Plus easy access to Hadrians Wall which was the main reason of our visit.
Close to all amenities but in a quiet location. Comfortable rooms and owners were very welcoming and helpful. In one word - PERFECT!
The cottage is in a very good central position and very comfortable. Owners very friendly and helpful. We hope to go again sometime.
The Christmas decorations were just right and created a lovely festive atmosphere without going over the top.
The cottage was first class. Everything you could want was provided. There was plenty to do in the area and we found a week was not long enough.
The owners were on hand to welcome us and for any queries but never intrusive. The cottage was warm, spacious and well equipped with an attractive outdoor seating area for warmer periods of the year. The location was great - quiet but close to the facilities of the town which include a Tesco store, good range of other shops, pubs, take-aways and places to eat out. We were walking Hadrian's Wall in day stages over our week and chose Haltwhistle for the transport links because it is on the railway line and also served by the AD122 seasonal bus that calls at points along the wall.
The cottage is situated next door to the house of the owners who were friendly and made us welcome. Upstairs is a large, light and pleasant living room, a nice bathroom and a well equipped kitchen. There is also a terrace overlooking the owners' beautiful garden. The only drawback is that, because the cottage is built on a sloping site, the bedrooms are downstairs and built into the hill, with the result that they are a little darker than we would have liked. The location is good, quite close to the centre of Haltwhistle but on a quiet street. Haltwhistle itself is pleasant, although a little underwhelming, but the nearby countryside and Hadrian's Wall are wonderful.
The location of the property and the 'cosiness' of the property too, felt like home from home.Owners were lovely and helpful too.
Getting about was really easy on the buses and free for OAP's. The cottage was very comfortable with very friendly and efficient owners who were very helpful. The cottage also has a beautiful garden. Lots of information provided.
Good location. Friendly owners. Very nice living room.
The cottage was very comfortable and clean, the equipment was very high quality and there was plenty of it. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage
Our objective for the week was to walk the Hadrian's Wall Path. This cottage was a wonderful base, warm, comfortable , close to transport links and amenities. A car is not essential. The owners are at hand if needed but never intrusive. We would highly recommend.
We have been in many holiday cottages, but this one for its quality and situation has been one of the best. Friendly and helpful hosts too. Perfectly placed for stunning countryside and interesting historic sites.
A lovely cottage, that cannot be faulted, ideally located for Hadrian's wall and surrounding countryside.
The cottage was great and the holiday went very well. The value for money was far greater than 2 nights at a B&B. The owner made us feel very welcome which was very pleasing.
Excellent cottage. Ideally located for walking Hadrian's Wall.
The location is very handy for local facilities which means you don't need to use the car.
This is with out doubt one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in! It has been renovated to an extremely high standard and is in a perfect location for exploring Hadrian's wall. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone.
Great location. Great cottage and most importantly, great hosts. We were made to feel extremely welcome and had an excellent break.
Not only was the cottage furnished and equipped to a very high standard, It also had that something extra that made it easy to relax there. Thank you for a fantastic holiday!
Excellent property, good location within village with easy access to amenities and a perfect base for visiting Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland. Fantastic holiday. Can't wait to return!
The cottage was excellent throughout and we felt instantly at home. The area itself was wonderful with plenty of excellent walks and things to do both close to the cottage and further afield. We couldn't fault it and to be honest were sorry to have to come home after such a wonderful time
In some twenty years of renting self catered accommodation this was without doubt the cleanest, best presented property we have visited. We appreciated the chance to receive some guidance to the area from real people rather than just from a folder full of leaflets. Five star chocolate cake too!
A beautiful and comfortable cottage, slap bang in the middle of Hadrian's Wall Country. I cannot fault it.
The cottage was extremely well-equipped and very comfortable. We certainly felt at home. We shall return!!!
The cottage was very warm and comfortable and the owners friendly and helpful.
This is the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, in terms of cleanliness and standard of furnishings etc. We would recommend it without any hesitation and will definitely be back.
The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and close to shops, pubs/restaurants, and bus service stops. Pleasant terrace overlooking owners' lovely garden.
The owners greeted us warmly: nothing was too much trouble. We were given a guided tour of the property and invited to contact them should there be any problems or any queries. The property is full of history and character and a very well thought out conversion. It is cosy and - in spite of it being a really cold June week - our limited times indoors were very comfortable. The property's location in Haltwhistle is ideal for exploring a fascinating and beautiful part of Northumbria.
The holiday was excellent. The countryside, exceptional beauty. Hadrians Wall breathtaking. Haltwhistle Is an excellent base for walking. The cottage is of the highest quality and the owner keeps It immaculate. It is a home from home with all the mod cons anyone could wish for. We would recommend Crescent Cottage to everyone.
We could not fault Crescent Cottage. It is by far the best accommodation that we have ever rented and the most helpful owners have cut no corners in providing a most welcome and cosy base for a vacation in this beautiful county.
Sykes cottages are always of a very high standard, but this one far exceeded even those expectations. The owners were extremely friendly and welcoming, the cottage was fabulous and the "extra touches" of milk, a cake, fresh flowers, tea, coffee and a TV magazine were very much appreciated. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending this cottage. We had a wonderful holiday and would certainly go back.
The cottage was lovely and clean.
The accommodation was of a very high standard. It is one of the very best properties we have stayed in. We will certainly return.
The property all round was excellent good value, the owners cared and catered for everything, very nice people. The location was also brilliant for travelling and sightseeing.
The cottage was maintained to a very high level with everything you could need supplied. Very impressive!
A good base from which to tour the area on foot and by public transport, nice, friendly owners but we were left alone to enjoy a peaceful holiday.
A really charming, well equipped cottage.
It was an enjoyable place to return to after a day spent sightseeing. The owner was very helpful and welcoming.
One of the best holiday cottages that we have stayed in, this cottage is great for walkers and just relaxing. More than just a place to stay, all the little extras made you feel welcome.
Pint of milk in the fridge, newspaper and Radio Times, as well as friendly welcome from owners made us feel at home. Very comfortable beds, incredible clean, very pretty flowers.
The owners were very welcoming. The cottage was cosy and very comfortable and the surrounding area is beautiful. The walk from the cottage was lovely.
Crescent Cottage was perfect for us - in town, but quiet, near to all the shops and the Black Bull Pub. The owner met us at the train station, brought us to the cottage, and settled us most comfortably. She provided a warm welcome and food essentials. Haltwhistle is an excellent site for walking. We also joined the Haltwhistle Wednesday walkers for one of their local walks. I hope to return to Haltwhistle for the Walking Festival. if I do, Crescent Cottage would be my first choice.
An absolutely super holiay cottage. Ideally placed for 'Roman' around. A very warm welcome and friendly hosts. One we'll go back to in later years.
I would like to say a big thank you to the owners. On our arrival there was milk in the fridge, a cake and tea and coffee available, which after a long drive was very much appreciated. The cottage could not have been better and the information pack provided was simple to understand and very informative. It made planning the next days activities very easy. We met the owners a few times and they very much helped us get the most out of the area with their suggestions. So all in all we could not be more happy with the service that Sykes provided and the lovely cottage, welcome and advice from the owners. Thanks all for helping to make it a very enjoyable holiday!
The cottage was as Excellent as mentioned. The hosts were most helpful and took the time to advise on not only the cottage but the surrounding area and attractions. They took great pride in the presentation of their very clean and comfortable cottage but also the outstanding countryside which can be explored at length.
The owners of the cottage were very welcoming and helpful and the cottage provided everything we needed. The area was excellent mountain biking country and the garage provided meant we could keep our bikes safely.
Excellent walking from the door. The cottage was very well equipped with an ample supply of crockery and cutlery.
The Cottage was well equipped, well looked after and easy to get to on public transport. The owners were also really helpful.
I liked the location of the cottage and the high standard of equiptment and furnishings.
Spotless throughout. Very safe for our children - ages 6 & 3. More local amenities than any other village in the area. Walking excellent.
The cottage was ideally suited for exploring this part of the country. Excellent facilities & a fabulous place to stay - what more could we say !
