The lovely town of West Burton, nestled in a hollow of the little-known Walden Valley, is a wonderful location for a peaceful holiday. This charming, ancient village is situated in beautiful countryside in the heart of Wensleydale. Composed of old stone cottages surrounding the famous broad village green, this is a popular retreat amongst walkers looking to enjoy the Dales with their wonderful views and small but spectacular Cauldron Falls - a feature that was captured about by the artist, J M W Turner. Also fringing the green is a traditional village pub which serves good food, whilst there is an excellent range of amenities in the nearby market towns of Hawes and Leyburn.
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?
I have booked this cottage 3 times as it is a perfect “getaway” being virtually “off grid” yet sporting all the usual home comforts. The views from the property are wonderful and the extensive grounds boast not 1 but 2 streams! The owners live on the other side of the Pennines but they are only a phone call or email away and they respond promptly, unlike Sykes!
What can I say, fab find in beautiful surroundings. Very well equipped, spacious and so clean. Lovely personal touches from the owners. Excellent spot to get away from it all. Perfect retreat
This was a lovely home to stay in. The location was perfect and beautiful. It knocked my socks off!
The location of this cottage is just amazing. Surrounded by the beautiful Dales with views from nearly every window. The cottage itself is superb with the feel of tradition mixed with modern comforts. The garden is an ideal place for a picnic or to let the kids run wild.
The location of Cowstonegill is perfect for a relaxing stay and the outlook is stunning. I don't think I have been to anywhere quite so tranquil, and that includes many other parts of The Dales. We enjoyed watching 'the girls' [cows] from the farm across the fell go up for milking on a morning and then again later in the afternoon. Beautiful walking wherever you go in the area. Cowstonegill is a very impressive and well tended property and we were thrilled to have found it - much thought has been given by the owner in furnishing and equipping the house. Perfect in every way
Cowstonegill is a wonderful house. It was warm, comfortable and superbly equipped. It is in such a lovely setting too. The owners have created a real home from home. We want to go back for a longer stay.
The serenity of the cottage in beautiful surroundings. Total peace and quiet.
Cottage was lovely to come back to after a good walk in this beautiful area. It is warm, welcoming, spacious and has lovely views across a quiet valley, with its own grounds to explore as well. There are thorough instructions to help you get the most from your stay, and all was spot on! It exceeded our expectations in every way.
The general position of the cottage and surroundings were enchanting.
Huge cottage, absolutely beautiful, liked the fact necessities were provided. All the light fittings worked. Loved the table tennis and table football. This was a gorgeous property with quality furnishings throughout. A great back garden for football and bunny rabbits everywhere. Loved it.
Everything! The cottage was fantastic and suited our every need.
The cottage was perfect, beautifully furnished, and clean. The supply of tools for a keen cook was excellent (the only thing missing was an electric whisk.). The owners and their local contact were very helpful on the two occasions we needed to contact them. The view of the Dales was outstanding and we had the feeling that we were in a much-loved home that the owners wanted to share.
A very comfortable cottage in a lovely location with walks straight from the door.
This house is the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in (that's in 25 years of self catering cottages). The cottage was in an outstanding location and the views were amazing.
Cowstonegill is a fantastic property tastefully furnished to a high standard in a stunning location. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in the Dales, with beautiful walks and magnificent views, then look no further, you wont be disappointed. This was our second visit and we hope to return again soon. Highly recommended.
The cottage is gorgeous, and in the most tranquil setting imaginable. The views from every window are stunningly beautiful. The cottage itself is equipped to a high standard, and lovely and cosy even in the wind and rain. It provided an ideal holiday for two families with small children. Just perfect.
Very high standard of furnishing and equipment.
A real characterful getaway, peace and quiet guaranteed!
Beautiful, peaceful place and a fabulous house with everything we needed and more. Very luxurious!
An excellent property in a superb location!
This is a beautiful old house, which has been lovingly retored, decorated and furnished to a very high standard. The village is picturesque and we spent a really happy evening at the village pub playing in the Christmas Darts challenge (we gave some of the locals a run for their money but ultimately we were soundly beaten!). Our only reservation for a winter let is the access- it really is across a field: the track barely justifies the word, and in snow it would be a problem. It would also be impossible to get food - let alone people - to the house without the use of a tractor in the snow!
The cottage was very warm and comfortable with beautiful scenery from the bedroom windows. It was very well equipped and there was generosity of spirit- a lovely Christmas tree, a welcoming bottle of wine and chocolates, a really nice atmosphere. We loved the village pub too!
The last mile or two may be long but this wonderful house is worth it. A superb character farmhouse in a wonderful setting. A cosy, secret retreat. Make sure you explore the grounds down to the river. The games room was a bonus. Highly recommended.
Very well equipped kitchen and very comfortable beds. The wood burning stove drew well and heated the room quickly. Wood was provided for chopping plus wine and chocs on arrival! Beautiful setting.
No complaints. Everything excellent. We will return.
Great property in lovely location. Walking straight from the door.
Cowstone Gill is a lovely cottage to get away from it all! Set in glorious scenic location next to a stream, it has it all! The cottage is equipped to a high standard, especially the kitchen, which is of true farmhouse size and style. having two staircases and bathrooms, it is ideal for two separate couples or larger families. Furnishings are comfortable downstairs with an excellent log burner for colder times. I can highly recommend this super cottage and have already booked a second stay!
We enjoyed its rural position, plus the outside space. The size of the property was also good.
Everything we needed was in the cottage. Peaceful location with lovely views & walking from them door.
The cottage and setting in one of our favourite parts of the world is perfect. You feel at home straight away even though there is plenty to explore inside and outside of the property. The cottage is possibly the best appointed I've ever been in and the wine and chocolates on arrival were a very nice touch. Despite the cottage being nestled on a private hillside well away from it all, the villages, walks, abbeys and castles of Wensleydale, Swaledale, Nidderdale and Upper Wharfedale are only a short drive away from the cottage, allowing you to see the best of the Dales with a ridiculous amount of ease. In short one of the best holidays we've ever had!
Immaculate accommodation, very well equipped and in a lovely secluded location.
It's in a beautiful location, we were able to relax and enjoy our time together. The house is equipped for everything, warm, welcoming and spotlessly clean. Although the house is remote, it is within easy access to both the beautiful villages of Hawes and Leyburn. We would strongly recommend this holiday cottage to anyone looking to switch off from the world and enjoy the many wonderful walks in the Yorkshire Dales.
The cottage was wonderful, the scenery idyllic and lots to do in the surrounding area, even with a teenager and an 8 year old. Would highly recommend and we will be back.
Cowstonegill has a lovely atmosphere and is very welcoming. There is everything you need to make the holiday very comfortable and makes catering very easy.
Excellent location, very remote and has beautiful views. The front garden was lovely, it was great for our 5 year old to play in.
The location of this cottage is fantastic and the views are breathtaking. It is a perfect cottage for a family holiday. The little stream is lovely for the children to play in, there are lovely walks from the cottage and there's lots to do in the surrounding area. A first class cottage!
Seclusion. Games barn. Great sized rooms. Homely. Great garden. Very pleasant to stay in - really felt like a home away from home.
The fact that this was our second visit and the fact that we hope to go back next year is an indication of our very high regard for the property and location. It is a property that is comfortable and well equipped with loads of character and superb views.
The amount of room in the property, the location, great walks without the need for a car, very good for child safety. Overall feeling of 'home from home' and a lovely warm house.
Fantastic scenery combined with a well furnished and comfortable house made our first holiday in "The Dales" a truly wonderful experience.
A peaceful place to stay in a beautiful dale. A lovely cottage in a fantastic rural setting. A perfect family holiday!
The house and the surrounding countryside views were fabulous. Unfortunately whilst the rest of Britain had a heat wave it was quite cool and blustery around Cowstonegill. However still had a lovely holiday in a lovely part of Yorkshire.
If you wand a relaxing hoilday this is the place to be. no trafic just the sounds of the countryside. the birds and animals are terrific. the house is great withe everything you need.
We enjoyed the peace and location of the property, and especially liked sitting in the garden enjoying the views. We are already recommending this property to family and friends and will visit again.
Fantastic cottage. Extremely well equipped and comfortable and spacious. Lovely to have somewhere to explore i.e the stream and adjoining land.
Lovely, well restored period property with excellent facilities. Its remote situation with glorious surroundings provide utter peace & tranquility. It is an excellent situation from which to tackle the infinite walks of the Dales.
We and our friends had an excellent walking holiday from such a warm, well-filled, spacious and comfortable farmhouse base. Acreage was so enjoyably private. All 100%.
The accommodation was outstanding and a beautiful, quiet location.
We loved the house. The standard of the property was excellent, it was warm in exceptionally cold weather conditions and it was very well equipped. If we had to be snow-bound anywhere this was the place to be!
Wonderful place - beautiful location, beautiful property, in immaculate condition with all mod cons. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
We sated at Cowstonegill for a week at the end of Sept into October and could not fault it. Being in the tourism business ourselves we do tend to be a bit fussy but really found it to be all we wanted and then some.... Location and scenery is fantastic as long as you do like to be "out in the sticks" and the house itself was warm cosy and very well equipped. We (2 couples) loved the 2 ends of the house which gave us space and privacy. The walk into the village either along the road or via the footpath was superb with lovely views and the village of West Burton provided all we needed with shop great butcher and very welcoming pub serving excellent food. If we return to the area we would stay there again and would highly reccommend it to anyone. Best ...the setting Worst...can't think of anything.
This old farmhouse has been so tastefully renovated since we last stayed 15 years ago, such that the comfort and amenities have greatly improved without spoiling its unique and utterly delightful old-fashioned charm. We love the quiet dale, the friendly farming community and the wildlife - and local meat from the West Burton butcher is to die for! We were received with great warmth by both the Methodist and Anglican churches nearby, and the whole area must be as near as one can get to heaven on earth! What a wonderful family holiday!
The views, the open fires, the period features and the excellent level of equipment. Lots of little personal touches too.
Superb accommodation in stunning scenery. Warm and spacious with every conceivable requirement in the kitchen. Lovely walks, excellent local pub, good shops all nearby. All we could have asked for and then some. Definitely will recommend.
We have stayed at Cowstonegill previously. We had a very enjoyable second visit. It is perfect for both an out of the way holiday and a walking holiday too. The children were in awe of the space both inside the cottage and the never ending gardens. Their own special brook was an added bonus. They even enjoyed playing in the rain!
We could not of asked for more from our stay, cottage is in an idyllic setting, many places to visit, excellent garden for the children and very lucky with the weather. We will certainly return to Cowstonegill in the future.
It's the loveliest place I've ever lived in let alone stayed in. The Dales cultural history oozes, with great peace and warmth, from every stone.
A superb characterful property- the best I have ever stayed in!
Cowstonegill is the perfect holiday for a peaceful and tranquil rest from the rat race. The scenery was absolutely spectacular. The house was very well equipped for both kitchen requirements and entertainment making the whole experience feel like home from home. We will definitely be back and would not hesitate to recommend Cowstonegill to friends.
We couldn't believe our luck when we arrived at Cowstonegill. The situation was simply fantastic with wonderful views, peace and tranquility. The house was perfect and we particularly loved the cobbled yard. There was lots of space and we felt really at home. The garden and land was just an added bonus.
Your brochure doesn't do justice to Cowstonegill. The approach to the cottage was spectacular and the cottage itself far exceeded our expectations. Our children loved the extensive grass and playing in the brook and particularly liked having so many young lambs on their doorstep. The sitting room was very cosy and the playbarn was a thoughtful touch.
We had a lovely relaxing break. Great walks, beautiful views, brilliant weather and a particularly beautiful setting. The 2 fireplaces made Cowstonegill lovely and cosy and overall this was a very pleasant and comfortable home which we would love to return to sometime...
Getting away from the mobile phone!!! Being able to totally relax. It's a really beautiful place to take a break and spend quality time as a family. We will be back again soon!!!
Cowstonegill was just beautiful. The children were in heaven with plenty of outdoor space to explore, the barn and stream really made their holiday. The perfect setting in which to relax. Well looked after, clean and very comfortable. None of us wanted to leave and we will certainly return.
Stress free, peace and quite. All facilities were excellent in an excellent location.
Fantastic cottage in idyllic location, very spacious and well equipped. Garden was great and the stream running adjacent to the property was a big hit with the children.
We have stayed in many holiday cottages and Cowstonegill has to be the best we have ever stayed in. Everything was perfect, we could not have asked for more, and the location was amazing, totally amazing.
Beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean. Someone had gone to a great deal of trouble to ensure that everything that you could possible need was there. Wonderful views and woke up to the sound of a stream!
Cowstonegill is a fantastic farm house, beautifully furnished and in an excellent setting with stunning views. It was very peacful and we all thought the beds were particularly comfortable!
We found Cowstonegill to be a lovely tranquil stop perfect for a relaxed holiday.
Everything was above our expectations! We will definately be back!! Very well looked after and made us feel very welcome. The village people were also very very friendly and helpful. It's a hidden gem!!
This is the cleanest, most well organised cottage we have ever hired. It is fabulous for children, they have played in the stream everyday. Great walks, wonderful place!
Plenty of space for kids to run around. Table tennis in the barn ideal for wet weather.
This is our second visit to the property and we are sure that it won't be our last. It is a real home from home with all of the things that we need. It is comfortable and well equipped. The access to the property has been improved since our last visit.
Cowstonegill is home from home.
Outstanding property both in facilities and location. As good as we have experienced in 20 plus years of self-catering.
The cottage is surprisingly spacious. Amazing location deep in Dales countryside. Wonderful grounds to explore.
A gorgeous, spacious, well-equipped cottage in a fantastic location. A real retreat, a get away from it all location. We especially liked the size of the bedrooms upstairs and the antique furniture.
This was one of the finest cottages we have ever stayed in. It is very secluded without being too remote, in a stunning location.
The cottage setting was idyllic and the enclosed garden was fantastic for our young children to play in. We enjoyed the private land for walking, which had a lovely brook and there were also pheasants in the garden evey morning. There were walks right outside the doorstep too and the cottage was situated near to Hawes and Leyburn.
Cowstone Gill is simply a marvellous cottage with much ambience. We're thankful for having had the opportunity to stay in such a beautiful house! The countryside around West Burton is lovely.
This was one of the best holiday cottages I've ever stayed at, the standard of decor and cleanliness was excellent and the setting was outstanding. As usual Sykes has delivered an excellent holiday for a bargain price, keep up the good work!
Wonderful location.
A fantastic cottage and in a beautiful location....I am sure we will return. One of the nicest and best equipped cottages we have stayed in. Thank you!
This place is perfect for walkers or just very casual walkers. Could not find any faults with this property, very hard to leave.
House with character-beautiful setting, cosy and spacious. Perfect retreat for active and inactive.
A beautiful cottage in a fabulous location. The cottage was huge, with top quality facilities and furnishings. An excellent place to get away from it all, with walks from the door in every direction!
The peace and quiet - a wonderful location and a most picturesque and characterful property. We would love to have known its history.
The cottage was immaculately furnished and presented and we were immediately impressed when we entered the cottage on arrival. The cottage is situated in a perfect location for peace and quiet and the ideal retreat for a relaxing holiday, which is what we wanted. We would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage to our family and friends.
Ideal get away from it all.
Very pleasant and relaxing. Lovely area. Very well appointed.
Peace and tranquility! You can go for a walk directly from the house without having to drive anywhere. West Burton village was bigger than expected with community activities, shops etc. There is plenty to do further afield. The house is equipped with things to do - books, playstation, videos / DVDs etc. There is plenty of room to spread out and storage for muddy or wet outdoor gear.
A superb cottage- one of the best we have stayed in.
