Location Details

Conwy is an historic town and has been declared a World Heritage Site in recognition of its architecture and other links with the past. The town is most renowned for its medieval castle and town walls that are almost complete, both of which offer fantastic views of Snowdonia and the estuary of the River Conwy. Today Conwy is a bustling town that caters for both tourists and the local community. Ancient buildings sit comfortably among more recent properties and there is an abundance of places to visit. Top of the list is the Castle, but there are many more, including Plas Mawr, an architectural gem and said to be the finest surviving Elizabethan townhouse to be found anywhere in Britain. Towards the quayside you will find Aberconwy House a 14th Century merchant's house believed to be the oldest townhouse in Wales. It has been carefully restored to reflect the daily life of its residents over time. On the quayside you may enter the smallest house in Britain or visit the Aquarium and Conwy mussel museum. Take a boat trip on the river and see the Great Orme, or sail upriver to see the full beauty of the Conwy Estuary and the Conwy Valley.

Famous for its choirs, stunning mountain ranges and beautiful valleys, this wonderful country has something for everyone. From Snowdonia in North Wales to the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast in the South.

Reviews

Had a brilliant week's stay here. Peace and Tranquility. No noise just sheep birds and cows. Beautifully remote. Very well equipped cottage and a welcoming host. The front door is very low and the beams at the top of the narrow stairs difficult to negotiate for the older traveller however if you remember to duck it was OK. The dog enjoyed the outside space as we did relaxing in the sun in the outside space on the loungers provided

We have just spent a week at this lovely cottage. It was very well equipped and we had everything we needed. Great attention to detail. Very cosy especially with the log burner. The garden is sooo quite, with stunning views. Very peaceful location and within an hour of all the popular sites of North Wales. The owners were very welcoming.

We had the most relaxing & blissfully quiet time with our 2 dogs, good walks on the nearby beach, excellent places to visit within easy reach. Quiet, unspoilt, peaceful, just perfect! could not be more highly recommended. Property was idyllic, very cosy, and the private field just outside the door was a big hit with "furry babes" The owners were very helpful, loads of local knowledge, wood pit was excellent for the evenings to enjoy the setting, so a big thanks!. 10/10 we will go back, Kevin

A unique cottage that is rarely found. Perfect for 2 people and our dog was welcome as everywhere. In 10 minutes you are at the mighty city wall and the mighty castle of Conwy. Many thanks to the family of this dreamlike property.

A wonderfully peaceful stay at The Shippon, a picturesque cottage in amazing countryside. With sheep grazing in a nearby field, swallows flying low overhead and swooping into the barn next door and bees buzzing round the geraniums and lavender in the flower garden just outside the cottage we had a truly relaxing getaway. The cottage was well-appointed, clean and comfortable, with lots of books, games and guides to the local area, and the owners on hand to help if needed (home-grown veg was lovely!) Highly recommended for a relaxing stay in a beautiful corner of north Wales.

So our first visit to The Shippon and what a treat beautiful and so so peaceful. Our work is demanding and yet despite months of hard work and a five plus hour drive to get there (don't ask) as soon as we arrived chill relax and the Shippon effect. In all my travels I have never been so chilled out sitting in the garden with amazing views birdsong and sheep WOW A big log burner took more of our attention than any tv programme. A really comfy bed meant really restful night's. Not the best weather on our visit but it's Wales wet in the morning lovely in the afternoon lots to do within a short drive and none of it over priced a big Tesco nearby for essential supplies. The ultimate accolade is that we have booked again already and cannot wait to return we will be regular visitors. The owners Andrew and Sarah are lovely there if you need them but not intrusive. For those people that complain about low beams in their reviews learn to duck if not laugh it off it's your fault not the building.

The cottage was well equipped and in a great location. It more than met our needs and expectations.

Rated by Mr Taylor reviewed on 7th June 2015

Loved the cottage and the location! The fire was exceptionally nice. The bed very comfy and the sounds of the countryside, devine! Especially for us Londoners. Supplies were a bit frugal. For instance when we arrived there was a basket not quite full of wood and not much kindling but we were asked to pay £5 for an 'extra' basket of wood. An empty black pepper container was in the cupboard and there were no clips or elastic bands which are really handy for keeping one's food fresh. We were going to have a BBQ but it was filthy so we fried our steaks instead. Having said this....we would go back! Because of the location, the lovely cottage and the owners were friendly but not intrusive. It is true what everyone else has been saying about the beams! Mind your head! My partner and I are both only 5'5" and we found them a little low ( he hit his head 4 or 5 times and it was painful! ) we joked that they should call it Hobbit House. I would suggest that the owners provide: more wood and kindling on arrival; look into getting a couple of beam cushions for those low beams; provide a list of what cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils there are so that we can bring our own of whatever we find useful that the cottage may not have. Another cottage we visited does this and it's a brilliant idea. And chuck that BBQ for a new one ( and ask people to clean the BBQ after themselves! ) These niggly things are the only reason we give it 4 stars instead of 5.

This is a very appealing and comfortable rustic accommodation. It has charm and makes you feel very relaxed. It is well equipped and comfortable. It has a homely, individual feel. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The open plan living lends itself well. only slight draw back would be the number of low beams which I managed to hit with my head several times! Other than that a pretty perfect place to escape the world and enjoy the countryside. Would definitely go again!

Rated by Alan R reviewed on 5th April 2015

The cottage was just delightful, thoughtfully decorated and set up, cosy and homely. The huge wood burner was a real treat! And the bed, oh my god I didn't want to leave it! The owners were excellent - friendly and helpful but not intrusive. There was a well thought out collection of films and games and plenty of info on local attractions. We were VERY happy there.

Rated by Ms Backwell reviewed on 16th March 2015

Very welcoming and friendly owners. It was perfectly isolated to get away from it all but near enough to town when needed. Had a big field to exercise the dog in. Bliss.

We had a lovely stay at the Shippon. The owners were excellent hosts. We especially appreciated how pet friendly they were and they took extra time to provide information on pet-friendly establishments in the area. Our dogs really enjoyed the property as well. The furnishings have been upgraded since the website pictures were taken, so it was even better than expected.

Rated by Miss Marion reviewed on 13th November 2014

The cottage was clean and cosy, quite small but perfectly adequate for 2 people. The owner met us on arrival and was very friendly, and even lent us a book on local archaeology, but then left us alone and was not at all intrusive. The kitchen is small but has everything you need. A large basket of logs and coal were provided for the fire, which was set ready for lighting when we arrived. However, the cottage was warm and cosy and we only used the fire once. The site was quiet and peaceful, and made a good base for exploring Snowdonia. Conwy with local amedities is only a short drive away and there are many walks you can do from the doorstep. The narrow lanes leading to the property were not a problem. We were allowed to use the field outside the cottage which was great for our 2 dogs. The resident dog was very friendly and came to visit a few times. The only negatives were the low entrance door, and steep stairs under low beams going up to the mezzanine bedroom. Not a problem for me but my 6'2'' husband banged his head a few times. The cottage wouldn't be suitable for anyone with mobility problems, but is great providing you don't mind ducking your head in some areas. We would definitely visit again.
