The Byre, Wentnor

The Byre has been tastefully converted to offer accommodation for 2 people; a classic, romantic retreat. Exposed beams and a four-poster bed help it retain much of its original charm and there is also a small garden from which you can enjoy the stunning scenery or indulge in a spot of al fresco dining. There is parking for up to 2 cars, although the best way to get the most from this area is on foot.

All ground floor. 1 double bedroom with four poster. Bathroom with bath, separate shower cubicle, basin and WC. Modern fitted kitchen with dining area and French windows to garden. Cosy sitting room.

A stone-built, semi-detached barn conversion on a working farm, in a peaceful location at the foot of the Long Mynd Hills near the village of Wentnor, 12 miles from Church Stretton. Attractively furnished in a traditional style, the property is brimming with character, including exposed beams, wall timbers and a four poster bed. There is also a pretty patio garden with spectacular views of the Long Mynd. A few hundred yards away, the Adstone Walk on the Shropshire Way is a walker's paradise while the famous Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge are nearby. The amenities of Church Stretton, medieval Ludlow and Bishop's Castle are within easy reach, as are numerous attractions including the Ironbridge museums and many National Trust properties.

The village of Wentnor lies on a ridge to the west of the Long Mynd, with good views in all directions. It is an attractive village, situated on a location that can be traced back to Saxon times. The church of St. Michael and All Angels is at one end of theridge, and there are spectacular views to be had from there, looking towards the west from the churchyard. Carved into an outside wall of the church is an inverted 'face'. Inside is a tombstone known as the ‘Hurricane Tombstone'; this is in memory of a family who lost their lives in the nearby hamlet of Asterton during a hurricane in 1772. Wetnor is also situated close to many other historic Shropshire attractions. The Shropshire Hills are littered with Roman and Iron Age settlements, perfect destinations for those who want to mix a bit of history with a scenic walk. Church Stretton is only a few miles away and offers a beautiful example of a modern medieval village. With outdoor pursuits, such as fishing and mountain-biking, in abundance, Wentnor is a haven for those looking to get away from it all.

Reviews

Wow!! What a fantastic place, currently sitting in the lounge of this property writing the review, couldn't wait to get home to do it!! Don't want to go home!! This place is great. Very high standard of decor with every attention to detail being made. As others have stated the pictures quite simply don't do it justice. We found the bed very comfy, neither too hard or soft. Location is so pretty and quiet. We have had the most relaxing weekend before the usual annual onslaught of Christmas!! VERY HIGHLY recommend this place to EVERYONE. Will be returning for a full week next summer. LOVED IT. Thank you.

The Byre is a very quiet and peaceful out of the way cottage. We received a lovely, warm welcome from the owner.

Rated by Mr Ball reviewed on 24th May 2016

The Byre is in the most peaceful, remote and tranquil setting. The location for us was simply all that we needed with remarkable views. The Byre, in our estimation, exceeded all our expectations in all respects.

Rated by Mr Lambert reviewed on 8th May 2016

Great walking straight from the door. Friendly and knowledgeable owner. Great weather too. Lots of varied bird life including many Red Kites.

The Byre is a delightful cottage, ideally situated for walking direct from the doorstep.

The Cottage was set in a beautiful, tranquil location with excellent views across the countryside and surrounding hills.

Rated by Mr Cuskeran reviewed on 5th July 2015

The holiday cottage was lovely and had everything we needed to be able to enjoy our holiday. The pictures didn't do it justice; The Byre is located in the most amazing setting and we loved the experience of waking up and hearing nothing but the sheep and the birds. I would recommend this cottage to anyone but particularly to those who enjoy peace and quiet and hiking which was from the doorstep. We could happily have stayed a second week and there would still have been plenty to do. The owner goes the extra mile and the property was spotless. We appreciated the books, tv, radio and board games being provided. We would certainly stay there again.

Rated by Ms Ingram reviewed on 9th June 2015

We really enjoyed our one week stay at the Byre. It is ideal for those who love peace and quiet and enjoy hiking. The cottage is so well equipped with everything you could possibly need and spotlessly clean. We really appreciated the fresh flowers, chocolate, wine, milk, tea and coffee that were there when we arrived. I don't believe the pictures on the website do this cottage justice. The setting and the views are just stunning. We loved waking up and hearing nothing but the birds and the sheep. We love our hiking and found plenty of walks to keep us busy for a week. We could happily have stayed for a second week and would not hesitate in recommending this cottage to anyone. If there is just one slight criticism is that we found the bed too small and the mattress too hard.

Rated by Mr Darlington reviewed on 19th May 2015

The cottage was in the perfect position for a walking holiday. Everything one could need was provided, in fact the welcome was the best we've experienced. It was close to National Trust properties for rainy days and there was a pub serving good food within reasonable walking distance.

The cottage was ideal, well kept and well appointed. In an absolutely delightful setting in the Shropshire Hills. The owner was a lovely man and so helpful. The walks from the cottage offer endless possibilities with the Shropshire Way and the Jack Mytton Way on your doorstep.

Rated by Mr Broadhurst reviewed on 8th January 2015

This cottage and it's location could not have been better. The cottage was absolutely delightful in every way and so homely. It was especially nice to arrive in a warm cottage. I'm sure we will return.

Rated by Mr Hampton reviewed on 7th July 2014

This cottage is provided with everything you could possibly want, and then some. We were greeted with fresh flowers, chocolates, wine, tea, sugar, milk, coffee and many other essentials to get us started. It was spotlessly clean, comfortable and spacious. Set in a lovely garden on a farm, it was very peaceful. If it is the city life you are after this may not be the place for you but we couldn't fault it.

Rated by helenbL4881JC reviewed on 5th July 2014

This cottage was the best we have stayed in. It was quiet and out in the sticks. The owner was a superb host and everything was catered for even the special additions. It's great for walk, or rides and there is plenty to see and do. There's a good pub in the village which serves excellent food and very friendly. The comments book says it all. We will be going back.

Rated by Mr Goodacre reviewed on 22nd June 2014

This beautiful cottage was just the tonic we needed. Everything you could need is there and more as you arrive to a bottle of wine, flowers, chocolates and bottled water. The water is from a bore hole but we had no problems at all with this. It is much larger than it looks on the web site and of a very high standard. The views are wonderful. Only very small thing, and this is just a personal comment, the mattress is far to soft. The Crown pub in Wentnor is excellent. Food is lovely and all the staff and locals made us feel very welcome.

Rated by Sandiefelixstowe reviewed on 10th May 2014

We stayed for a week in this lovely holiday home which was very well equipped with everything you might need. It was quite spacious for a one bedroom property and the photos do not do it justice. As I was recovering from a recent illness it was the perfect place to relax. The views were fantastic from every window. The owner was particularly friendly and left some very welcome goodies to start the week.

Rated by Dawn R reviewed on 21st April 2014

We loved our stay at The Byre.

Rated by Mr Watts reviewed on 19th August 2013

Last week we had the pleasure of staying at the Byre in Adstone, near Wentnor. When we arrived, there was a warm welcome for us including complimentary chocolates, a bottle of wine, tea, coffee, milk and a bowl of grapes. Having looked around the cottage we could see we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The front porch afforded a stunning view of the Long Mynd with gliders and hang gliders soaring above the valley and to the rear of the cottage there is a patio area for eating outside or having a BBQ. The cottage has its own water supply from a bore hole - it tasted fine! The local pub serves very good food and beer but we found it preferable to drive there, it taking about 20 minutes to walk along the narrow lane. But this was also the beauty of the place, its remoteness and rural setting. We found it an ideal base for walking in the Shropshire hills. We would not hesitate to return if holidaying in Shropshire again.

Rated by Mrs Deaves reviewed on 8th November 2011

Spacious, quiet property, ideal for a couple. Impressed that there was both a bath and shower. Usually the smaller properties do not have a bath, which is a great shame after a long day out on the hills! Location was fantastic if you like walking. Straight out onto the Shopshire way and half an hour to the top of the Long Mynd.
