The lively town of St Columb Major lies just seven miles from Newquay. The town has many amenities including pubs, shops and a post office. St Columb Major is situated among superb countryside. Newquay is a bustling, popular seaside town which has a number of pubs, bars, shops, aquarium and zoo. Newquay is also well known for surfing and fantastic beaches. Nine miles from St Columb Major is the pretty, fishing town of Padstow. Also nearby are some beautiful walks along the South West coastal path, which has some stunning scenery, and the walks takein rugged cliffs tops, lovely sand dunes and beaches. Within ten miles there is something for everyone, from stately homes and beautiful gardens to adventure playgrounds, theme parks and golf courses. Only eighteen miles away are the famous Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan. St Columb Major and the area nearby have many attractions which are fantastic to visit any time of the year.

Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

Reviews

This place certainly has the WOW factor. Your every need is catered for, not a thing out of place, even down to our dog being left a Bonio in the dog bowl for our arrival. Lovely decor, light, airy, spacious & makes you feel very special. Downstairs is very relaxing with lovely patio doors allowing sunlight in virtually all day. The master bedroom is huge with an en suite that is superb. The bed & pillows were so comfy. Our daughter (12) loved her room as it had a tv in it & the separate bathroom, which made her feel very grown up seeing as she didn't have to share with mum & dad!!! Definitely a place I would choose to stop again. Very central to all that Cornwall had to offer. Only about half an hour to our favourite beach, Treyarnon Bay, which was our main reason for booking this cottage. With regards to the dog, the outside area is not secure so if your pet has a tendency to wander then maybe you need to have a re-think, plus no grass around so they can do their "business". Luckily our pooch sticks to my husband like glue so she never ever bothered to make an escape bid plus we didn't mind waking her round the village to let her go to the toilet & obviously we had pooh bags aplenty to clear it up!!!! Would be nice if we could have had re-cycling boxes for our empty "Rattler" bottles as I do like to re-cycle where I can. Apart from these two small blips I can highly recommend this cottage as a great base for a holiday to Cornwall .... get it booked!!!!!

Just returned back from a superb weeks holiday staying at The Old Smithy. The cottage was perfect, lovely decoration and had everything we needed. Added bonus of a Co-op a short walk away and the Ring O Bells does great food. Hopefully returning in October we loved it that much. Oscar our dog was also made very welcome xx

What a great week at The Old Smithy. The location is excellent to explore the wonders of North Cornwall and we felt very comfortable in this attractive cottage with plenty of windows and light and a nice outlook into the courtyard. The kitchen was really well set up so we were happy to prepare are own meals.

We stayed at The Old Smithy last year and everything was just as good this year. The cottage has such a high standard with everything, can't fault it in any way. It is ideally located in the middle of St Columb Major, with everything on your doorstep, and nowhere in Cornwall is too far to visit from this location, ideal. Will definitely be back again next year!

Everything about this cottage was excellent. The Old Smithy was in an ideal place for touring and close to amenities. The cottage was very clean and everything in it was top quality which was credit to the owner and cleaner. We could have lived there-we loved it .

The cottage was a lovely place to come home to after a full day of sightseeing. Cornwall is beautiful and the location of the cottage was very convenient.

Wow. This is a beautiful cottage in a lovely part of Cornwall and we had a great week there. The local butcher has a good selection of quality meats and the cottage is only a stones' throw from the co-op too; great for any forgotten items. We were very lucky with the weather and visited Watergate Bay each morning to walk the dog before then exploring in the afternoon. This is a fantastic place and we are already planning for next year.

Absolutely beautiful, loved everything about this cottage and will most definitely be back. The location is ideal as it is easy to get to places yet quiet and private. It has its own parking (always a plus in that neck of the woods) and a lovely local pub that does great food. Well laid out, very nicely decorated and has all the mod cons you need. Wish it was mine!!!

The Old Smithy is well located in Cornwall to provide us with a base for touring the county. It is so comfortable and well appointed, that it offers a total sanctuary at the end of the day, to cook a meal, relax in front of TV and read books on the lovely sofa. Thank you.

Rated by Ms Greenwood reviewed on 21st February 2015

The cottage was lovely and of a high standard. It was larger and nicer than I had anticipated. I would definitely recommend to others and would stay again on our return to Cornwall.

We stayed here with another couple, and the place had everything we could possibly need. It was immaculate, comfortable, and convenient - we could walk to a grocery store and great take-out places. Well-decorated, satellite tv, two great bathrooms! Good base for exploring Cornwall.

The cottage itself and where it was located, as nowhere was too far to travel to in Cornwall. St Columb Major had everything we wanted, including a well stocked Co-Op. Cottage was probably the best place we have stayed in and could not recommend highly enough both cottage and St Columb Major, really made our holiday great.

Rated by Mr Faulkner reviewed on 5th October 2014

This is a fantastic well equiped property in a very central but secluded position in the village of St. Columb Major. All of our required facilities such as private parking, a good pub restaurant and convenience store, etc., were within 100yds.

A very high standard of cleanliness, had everything you needed in the kitchen and had a high standard decor. A lovely home.

Rated by Miss Finn reviewed on 27th May 2014

The property was amazing. A stunningly beautiful renovation, attention to detail second to none, finish was better than any high end boutique hotel you could ever hope to stay in. Everything you could need was included, down to milk in the fridge, coffee, tea, sugar and biscuits to welcome us and some for the dog too, on top of a pile of extra towels just for her and a doggy dinner mat as well! Perfectly located to explore most of Cornwall 20 minutes from the coast in several directions. Could easily live there happily ever after; the pictures do not do it any justice or show just how big it is either.

Rated by Miss Lyle reviewed on 5th April 2014

The Old Smithy was very clean and well equipped. The village had a few shops and pubs for food which were only a short walk away. The accommodation was first class, the best we have ever stayed in and will hopefully be coming back soon.

We enjoyed the week in the nice Old Smithy. We appreciate the well restored old building with the modern kitchen and bathrooms. St Columb is a nice little town, and we explored the surrounding in Cornwall with car, and returned to our Old Smith with great pleasure!

This cottage has the wow factor as soon as you walk in. The photos do not do it justice. St Columb Major is a lovely little village with local shops and pubs also very central for getting out and about. Visited Lands End which did take about 1hr 20, Padstow, Port Isaac where they were filming Doc Martin, Sennen Cove which is beautiful, loads of other towns and villages, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cornwall and cannot wait to go back.

Rated by Sharon1961 reviewed on 22nd June 2013

We loved everything about the cottage, it was ideally situated for us, local shops and pubs/restaurants just round the corner, we went out every day to somewhere new. Had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go again.

We loved our stay here - had lots of friendly touches such as a cream tea to welcome us and dog treats for our dog! Compelted to a high standard - woudl definately go back

Rated by Della Williams reviewed on 17th January 2013

Good service from start to finish. Home was beautifully decorated and nice and central for sight seeing. National Trust properties close by, nice walks, beautiful coastline and interesting towns. Only blip was not being able to find the house easily-perhaps instructions could be improved? We couldn't see the name 'The Old Smithy' anywhere. Otherwise 10/10.

Rated by Maggi reviewed on 5th December 2012

The house is stunning - there was such a wonderful welcome with a cream tea waiting for us, and for our dog a pack of treats and towels for him if needed whilst we were there. Furnished to a very high standard making the stay feel very homely - would definitely recommend this to everyone.

Rated by Ms Williams reviewed on 25th November 2012

The property was of a very high standard and centrally located for touring.

Rated by Mrs Howling reviewed on 20th November 2012

Turned up on the Saturday pm where we were meet by the owner as there was a problem with one of the lights in the bathroom, she had a electrican turning up at any moment to fix it. She left us to settle in and unpack whilst the light was getting fixed, once this was done she wished us a great time and lefted. There was a bottle of red wine on the side and cream teas two great touches. The conversion is done to a very high standard spotless throughout, very clean even though pets have been welcome in this cottage. Beds were made in both bedrooms and towels on the beds too. Never heard of st columb major before, but it is an excellent base to get to Newquay, st Ives, Edan project, within 30mins. There's a co-op just across the square which is a 2min walk which is great to get a morning paper! And a local butchers too. There are a one or two things I would ask to change, another chair in the lounge area, DVD player in lounge for those cold nights in,some more hangers in the wardrobes and some shelves in the bathrooms so you can put the toiletries on. Other than that this is a 5 star cottage and would recommend to anyone wishing to visit Cornwall.
