Cow Byre Cottage, Wrelton

This property is a Grade II listed building, brimming with character. Much of its original charm has been retained through exposed beams and wall-timbers, wooden floors and a galleried bedroom. There is a double bedroom beautifully decorated to create a peaceful haven at the end of the day and the airy, open plan living area has a very 'French Country' feel. A walled front garden offers ample opportunity for al fresco dining in the summer, while full central heating and a flame-effect electric fire keep the cold at bay in the winter months.

Accommodation Details

One galleried double bedroom, accessed via three steps from the sitting room. Ground floor bathroom with wet-room style shower, basin and WC. Kitchen with dining table. Utility room. First floor sitting room with sofa and living flame electric fire.

A delightful, stone-built Grade II listed conversion of an old cow byre, in the centre of the village of Wrelton, 3 miles from Pickering. This charming property exudes character, with exposed timbers, wooden floors and a first floor living room leading up to a pretty galleried bedroom. Cow Byre Cottage is furnished and decorated to an exceptionally high standard, with a french country feel about it. There is excellent walking from the doorstep through the beautiful surrounding countryside, while other attractions such as the historic city of York, the market town of Helmsley, the steam railway in Pickering and all the trappings of the east coast resorts are within easy reach. A great base for a holiday. Note: This property is next to Ref.1844 and booked together they can accommodate 7 people.

The village of Wrelton boasts a fascinating past. After the last Ice Age, when this entire area was submerged by floodwater, and the village was a simple settlement clinging to the edge of the lake of Pickering. Much later, during the Roman Occupation, Wrelton occupied a key position on the route between Malton and Wade's Causeway on Stape Moor, and during the Georgian era, coaches would have stopped here on their way to Scarborough and Whitby. Today, it is a delightful mish-mash of stone cottages, modern houses and dry-stone walls. Although there are no shops in Wrelton, the village is served by the Buck Inn, which is famous for its good food and a fine selection of real ales. Nearby attractions include the market town of Malton, Pickering Castle, Castle Howard and the historic City of York, which has attractions for visitors of all ages.

Reviews

The cottage is set in a secluded courtyard with a privet patio area. The accommodation is very well appointed and equipped throughout with more than enough space for a couple. The owners were very welcoming and helpful and made us feel at home from the outset. Great base from which to explore the coast (Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hoods bay etc), the moors for walking and the North Yorks Abbeys (Rievaulx, Byland etc).Loads to see and do in the area. Highly recommended and hope to stay again in the future.

The cottage was extremely well equipped; everything was simple to use, and it was all very comfortable.

Rated by Mrs Chalk reviewed on 12th June 2016

We stayed here for a week and appreciated the solidity and privacy of the cottage; the off-road parking; high standard of equipment (shower, cooker, TV) that was easy to use; a comfortable bed and cleanliness of the cottage. A good base from which to visit North Yorkshire, including a regular bus service to nearby market towns. The owners were friendly, live nearby but not intrusive.

Rated by Chris C reviewed on 11th June 2016

The cottage was excellent in a beautiful quiet village, perfect for relaxing. It had all the amenities we required and was close enough to visit York (by car) or walk into Pickering. We had stayed in this cottage once before and were very happy to return.

Rated by Mr Clegg reviewed on 5th June 2016

The layout of the Cottage with the lounge area on the first floor made the most of the afternoon and evening sun. We certainly recommend this Cottage for a peaceful stay.

Very pleased with the cottage, had everything we required, was in a lovely quiet location, within easy reach of Pickering. Secure parking area, and lovely small, private courtyard garden. Would highly recommend.

Rated by Mrs Proctor reviewed on 22nd October 2015

The cottage is a very well presented holiday let. It is set in a lovely village and was very quiet and peaceful. There were instructions for all the amenities and everything worked. The property was very, very clean and tastefully decorated. The outside area was neat and tidy and made a nice place to enjoy the autumn sunshine. I don't think I have stayed in a nicer place. Faultless!

A very quirky old building that had been sensitively modernised as a great holiday rental. Quiet and private. A good location for exploring local area.

A great base for exploring the local area. Very comfortable, clean and private.

Rated by Mrs Price reviewed on 13th July 2015

Perfect base for exploring the area, with a number of interesting walks and sites very nearby. The cottage itself was perfect for a couple or someone holidaying alone, was very clean and well equipped. It was also very private, despite being right behind the owner's house. The owners themselves were welcoming and very helpful. We would definitely consider staying here again.

We liked everything about Cow Byre Cottage. The secure bike storage was first class and we would have to go a long way to beat it. The shower was also out of this world with plenty of hot water.

A very pleasant cottage; well laid out, nicely furnished and had everything you need. It was very clean, have stayed in many cottages all over England but I think this is one of the cleanest I have stayed in. Good location, very friendly welcome plus owners left milk, biscuits and fruit for your arrival. Nice touch.

Rated by Mrs Brown reviewed on 29th June 2014

Host showed us the accomodation and made themselves available to accomodate any further needs we might have. Clean and had everything we required. Location had everything we were looking for within walking distance or a short drive away. The unabtrusive freindly hosts, the immediate area we were in and the more than adequate cottage fof the money payed. There was nothing we disliked.

A lovely small 'quirky' cottage, with everything you could want. Welcoming but unobtrusive hosts; good location for visiting all the attractions in North/East Yorkshire. Local pub serves good food with a warm welcome. The visiting/moblile fish and chip van in the village is worth a visit.

Hosts were very welcoming and helpful. The cottage was well equipped and imaginatively set out. The location was very convenient for walking and for visits to the coast. The local pub was a few minutes walk away and served excellent food and beer and a very warm welcome.

The cottage was very cosy and comfortable, just what we had hoped for as November can be a very damp and chilly month. The weather was very kind to us but it was great knowing we were returning to a warm base where every care had been taken to make us feel at home. We particularly liked the cow theme of Cow Byre Cottage! The village is very well placed to take advantage of all the North York Moors has to offer and we were able to walk every day.

The cottage was a wonderful barn conversion and perfect for a 'get away' before the birth of our child. The conversion was situated in the small village of Wrelton, but was ideal for visiting the surrounding areas of Pickering and the coast. Overall, I highly reccommend this cottage for couples seeking either a romantic break or a truly relaxing stay. Everything you could possibly require was provided, alongwith a few extra added 'touches'.

A beautiful cottage in a beautiful part of the country. Close to the North Yorkshire Moors and the Railway, less than 30 miles from the coast and York/Harrogate whilst being surrounded by hundreds of beautiful villages!

Rated by Mr Wadley reviewed on 12th April 2010

This cottage was an ideal bolt-hole; tucked in Wrelton village off the main route into Pickering, with an excellent village pub.The landlord/lady were very personable and served us a very tasty, tho' inexpensive evening meal. We found some beautiful routes to walk locally, and also took the steam train to walk further afield. We came across a filming session of "Heartbeat"! which was entirely unexpected. Another joy was dining at The SWAN in Pickering coupled with a very long browse in the antique shop in the town. Our hosts were a family next door in the main farm house and were very sensitive to our needs.Helpful and readily available when needed and absent otherwise. All of this, and then to crown it all the weather for the entire week was truly springlike.Sunshine every day so that we were able to appreciate England at its' very finest. The simple joy of seeing the first snowdrops, and the wonderful vistas of Yorkshire pleased us immensely. We would love to revisit as part of our plan to spend more time in England, now that we have seen so many other places in Europe.
