Perfect for parties of up to 5 people, Hillgate House was originally built in the 18th Century, when it was used as a farmhouse. Since then, it has been lovingly restored to retain many of its original features, such as exposed beams and a cast-iron stove, yet has been decorated in a modern, yet complementary style. There is a large, lawned garden from which you can enjoy the scenery provided by the Callow and the Corndon Hills, or simply kick back with a glass of wine and enjoy a spot of summertime dining. There are walking, cycling and horse-riding facilities close by and parking for up to 3 cars.

It is situated close to the Welsh Marches, the border between England and Wales, and these rolling hills are ideal for walking or cycling, especially as there are characterful villages and ancient castles to be found throughout. The market town of Bishop's Castle is nearby and here you can enjoy their weekly market or simply soak up the scenery from one of the many excellent pubs and restaurants. Hemford is also well-placed for many of Shropshire's main attractions, such as historic Shrewsbury, the charming town of Ludlow or the imposing Stokesay Castle. Railway enthusiasts will appreciate the elegance of the Severn Valley Railway and the World Heritage Centre at Ironbridge offers a glimpse of days gone by.
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.
Wow what a place, so quite and relaxing, lots of birds to watch in the morning with a coffee! our two dogs loved the garden which is very secure so no need to worry local walks are very good. Our dogs sleeped for a week when they got home. Only 10 minutes to local pubs and 20 minutes to local town, Shewsbury is worth a visit only 40 minute drive. Property was very home from home with all that you need for comfortable stay, the owners are always contactable if you need them and very helpful. So all I can say if you want a relaxing quite break in the countryside then this is the place.
The most beautiful cottage we have ever stayed in. Wonderful surroundings , just perfect for a restful relaxing break. Cannot wait to return, we had a fabulous week & simply fell in love with the cottage & area.
We stayed here for a family holiday over half term. The owner was very thoughtful and rung us before our stay and when we arrived there were helpful additions like lots of hand sanitiser and gloves and wipes. Cottage was lovely and clean but the Shepherds hut was out of use due to the cleaner using it for Covid cleaning precautions which was totally understandable. We had seen some reviews that there were no freezer facilities but there is a small freezer that was totally fine for our needs. Our two labradors loved the garden and did not want to leave. The garden is dog safe but if you have small dogs they could get out through the gate bars, but the owner did explain this in his phone call. Beautiful views and extremely quite, the main noise was the birds singing in the morning. Beds were comfortable and plenty of games and books in the lounge. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and all utensils you would need. I can understand why people come back time and time again. Only one negative, we knew there was no WiFi and had promised our son he could use data on his phone for the week but we did not know that the phone signal is very poor. However, this did not spoil our holiday
The cottage has such a lovely feel about it and you immediately felt at home. The garden was superb. It was spotlessly clean and had a rustic cottage feel - a typical country cottage. We loved the remoteness albeit there was a school just up the road, it was peaceful, full of wildlife and some superb walks although because the weather was so nice we mostly enjoyed chilling in the garden watching the farmer at work and the wildlife.
We liked the peace and privacy of the cottage and the general isolation. Being able to let the dogs run free in the garden was a bonus. The cottage was well appointed and very comfortable; it felt like home almost straight away.
We had a lovely holiday. The atmosphere was very welcoming and we particularly enjoyed the garden. The cottage is very comfortable and stylish. The location is idyllic. Every effort was made to make our stay memorable.
I have been here quite a few times now and it is like walking into a well loved home. The owner has spent a lot of money on the property. The location is so relaxing and just what we needed. The garden is perfect. .
The cottage and surroundings are beautiful and extremely dog friendly. The kitchen is very well fitted out with many more gadgets and utensils that we have come across in previous cottages. It really was a home from home stay set in a completely chill out place.
Wonderfully dog friendly cottage! It has a large garden which the dogs and the grandchildren loved. Quiet location in beautiful countryside. We liked being woken up by the birds (especially the male pheasant). The owner is very helpful and should be proud of his property.
Hillgate House is a lovely home away from home. It has a nice secure garden for our two dogs, in a good location with hours of dogs walks if you turn right out of the gate. The beds are comfortable and have good quality bedding. There is a nice wood and coal burning stove in the front room and storage heaters to heat the rest of the house. We found the house to be very warm and cosy and can not wait to go back.
Hillgate House is the perfect place for peace and tranquillity. There was everything you could possibly need in the cottage and the garden was perfect for bird watching. There is a lovely little walk from the cottage to the standing stones on the open moorland and Skylarks galore. If quiet countryside holidays are what you enjoyM then I would definitely recommend Hillgate House. It is beautiful.
We had an excellent holiday! We have stayed in a variety of holiday cottages before and this was by far the best. Hillgate house was the perfect place to relax in peace and quiet with beautiful views over the country side to watch all the wildlife. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard; a log burner in the lounge made it very cosy on the colder days.
Hillgate House gave us a warm and cosy welcome as we walked through the door, we instantly felt at home. Everything you might need is there. The bird life in the garden was excellent. The location is perfect, it was very peaceful with stunning walks from the gate. Looking forward to our next visit.
Another great week in a cosy cottage, we will be back. Thank you very much.
One of the best cottages we have stayed in, had great difficulty in persuading our dog to leave!
Lovely cottage and garden, it was a peaceful and relaxing break with great walks on the doorstep.
Hillgate House is a well equipped, comfortable and cosy cottage in a very peaceful location. There is abundant wildlife in the garden. Hillgate House is one of the best cottages we have stayed in.
A lovely cottage, very quiet in the country with no passing traffic. Everything was well kept and everything provided for. The best cottage we've stayed in - and we've stayed in a few! Walks in the surrounding area were really beautiful with views looking out over remarkable countryside. If you like bird watching they are encouraged in the garden and we saw some beauties really close up that we don't get in our own garden. A very relaxing holiday and plenty to do around and about if you wish.
The location was wonderful with loads of wildlife and the cottage was beautiful.
This House is beautiful, we really couldn't recommend it highly enough. The owners have clearly put a huge amount of work into making it the perfect country destination. Hillgate House has the best of both worlds, with a new bathroom, comfortable beds, Sky TV and double glazing to go with the old-world charm of a 300 year old stone farmhouse. We spent a week there over Christmas, and had one to remember.
Excellent accommodation, could not fault it in any way. The location is just perfect for getting away and sampling 'the Shropshire way,' could not ask for any more.
Hillgate house was very dog friendly and had an enclosed garden which is very important to us, it was very cosy and felt like home, the wildlife around the cottage was amazing with lovely walks from the cottage, a very relaxing place to be away from everything.
A very well presented and comfortable cottage in a delightful location with a huge dog-safe garden. An ideal location for birdwatching.
Had a great stay in this fantastic cottage; the garden was brilliant for our dog too!
A beautiful country cottage in a wonderful quiet rural location. Many places of interest within easy reach both in Shropshire and in Wales. The owners had thought about the comfort of not only their guests but also their pets. They rang before we arrived to give directions and useful information and rang when we arrived home to check we had and enjoyed our stay and we certainly did! Perfect.
Lovely detached cottage in a rural location with great walks on the doorstep
Hillgate House is a comfortable and tastefully done out cottage with a large, fully-enclosed garden, perfect for children and dogs. The quiet countryside setting is a birdwatcher's paradise.
A homely and cosy stay.
Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings. Owner very considerate, ringing us before and after our stay to check all was OK. If we decide to visit this area again, and it's well worth another visit, then we'll definitely stay in this dog friendly property again.
It is remote, cosy and very friendly. It is like home from home. The quality of cottage is just what we expected, we have been before and absolutely love it. There is no phone signal and no internet; brilliant for a family to get the board games out and really communicate. My family love this place.
This was our second visit to this property & we would go again. Garden excellent for dogs and children. Excellent walks from house.
Absolutely lovely! Have been to other cottages, but this is the best by far. It is like walking into a home, lovely vibes, and such a welcoming feel, a place where time stands still, everything is there ready at hand and lots of extras too! Will come here again, I actually quite envy the owner of this one!
I realy cant add anything else to previous reviews. Hillgate house is Home from Home. Don't worry if you have left anything behind, I can assure you its there waiting for you at Hillgate House. Just one constructive critism a bigger fridge with possibly a freezer would be wonderfull. Otherwise !!! what can I say .
Paradise, I didn't want to leave. Beautiful garden, lovely area and people. The house was equipped with everything you would want and more. Would certainly want to return. So many places to visit, could not fit them all in the time allocated.
It was a great place for relaxation, it was very peaceful! There are interesting towns a short drive away and plenty of good places to dine out.
Location, Location, Location! Hillgate House was an excellent holiday cottage which provided an extremely comfortable and relaxing holiday. It is also extremely dog friendly. Highly recommended and would certainly stay at this cottage again. Future guests to the house won't regret staying there or the fantastic location.
The cottage was everything you could want and more. Thank you to Hillgate House and its very caring owners for a truly wonderful holiday.
Lovely cottage and seclusion.
Hillgate House was a complete home from home. I would imagine there are many homes which are not as well equipped. It was warm and welcoming and, despite the weather, we enjoyed every minute. The garden was beautifully kept and well enclosed for people with dogs. Yes, we have already recommended it to friends.
The garden was excellent for children and animals.
An abolutely wonderful, peaceful and comfortable house. The rush hour consisted of a tractor and a couple of horses. The birds in the garden and the surrounding fields woke us up and sent us to sleep. Good beds with no need to close the cutains as no traffic. Wonderful owner who ensured all was well. Very dog friendly.Very much recommended even if it means I cant book again (but dont book if you want a clubbing type of break!!
The idyllic, peaceful location, great walks and dog friendliness. The wood burning fire and of course the things that were already there for us that we so often forget when self-catering such as washing up liquid.
Hillgate House was a superb cottage. It was very well cared for and loved by it's owners. The facilities were superb. The wildlife was very appreciated and the supply of birdseed by the cottage owners again demonstrated care for the cottage gardens and the surrounding countryside. The location was central to excellent places to walk without taking the car. A very relaxing week was spent enjoying this cottage.
We felt welcomed from our first contact with the owner to gain access. The property/location was really excellent and made us book another holiday through yourselves.
Wonderful location - a superb cottage with a beautiful garden. Very dog friendly. A lovely owner who went out of his way to check all was OK. We ate in the garden for all meals despite a lovely dining room. The sound of curlews and other birds sent us to sleep and woke us up - sheer bliss.
A really comfortable cottage, great surroundings, and the owners were very friendly and informative. Me, my partner and 2 dogs loved every minute and didn't want to go home. I would highly recommend this property and am planning to book again in the future.
The location was fantastic, with walks from the gate. The garden was ideal for the dogs and the landlord was very helpful.
There is a nice, relaxed atmosphere in the cottage. We enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in the garden, resting by the fire after walking all day!
The cottage was very warm, comfortable and enjoyable. Not far to walk for stunning views. Lot of information provided on walks and places of interest etc.
Lovely cottage in beautiful setting and part of the country with easy access to walks perfect for taking dog. Very peaceful and relaxing.
PERFECT! Without doubt the very best cottage we have stayed at (and we have stayed at many). Will be re-booking!
The location of the cottage was delightful and very peaceful. It was well equipped, clean and cosy. The log burning stove, views and birds in the garden all contributed to the lovely setting.
The cottage was very attractive in a beautiful quiet location. In particular the kitchen was so well equipped and there was lots of information available about places to visit. It was lovely to have the wine and milk on arrival too, very thoughtful. The cottage was very cosy too and we loved the Shropshire Hills and all the walks available.
A nature lovers paradise.
The cottage was lovely in many ways and I would certainly go again. There is plenty to see and do in the area as well.
The cottage was very well-equipped with a lovely big garden for children. Very peaceful, and friendly neighbours.
Excelent service from the owners. Very well equipt and very comfortable. Fabulous location.I was born in the area 65 years ago and it was great to visit so many places that i spent my childhood in. The towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow are a must aswell as Ironbridge and all the beautiful countryside that surrounds the cottage.Nothing not to like about the holiday.
We stayed for a week in October and found the cottage welcoming and well equipped. Went to see the stipperstones and also were customers of the pub with the same name. Good food there. Woudl receommend to others.
The peace and quiet. At least a mile from cottage before you could get a mobile phone signal.....bliss.
Clean comfortable cottage in lovely rural area with good size garden and plenty of local walks. This pretty cottage is an ideal base for exploring the delights of the Shropshire Hills.
The cottage was excellent value and in a lovely location. Thank you.
We loved the cottage because it was nice and quiet. The owners had done a very good job of making us feel at home.
The garden was brilliant. It felt like we were staying in our own nature reserve. We saw rabbits every day eating in the garden. We also seen a rare spotted woodpecker and other rare birds such as a jay. FANTASTIC!
The description of the property was excellent and very accurate. The peace and quiet of the property was ideal and we both had a very relaxing time.
Peace and quiet though still easy access to local towns in Shropshire.
Very good walking especially with a dog.
Location was perfect. Cottage was warm, comfortable, relaxing and peaceful. It was equipped to the highest standard. Garden and surroundings perfect. We loved this cottage and will certainly return.
Very comfy beds. Lovely area. Great garden. Loads of charm to the cottage.
The property was as close to perfect as possible and we will definitely be returning to this property and using Sykes Cottages again.
Everything!!
Peace and quiet in the glory of Shropshire!
The tranquil surroundings of the cottage plus excellent standard of decor and cleanliness made for a superb stay. The best endorsement is that we are planning another visit soon.
Peaceful location yet easily accessable.
Isolated and secluded. Brilliant for our dog. Very central for walking and places of interest.
The cottage was very well furnished and decorated. The garden was ideal for our small dog. Generally quiet situation and easy access to country walks.
Loved both the cottage and the garden. Very well equipped.
It was excellent and in a top location. The furnishings etc. were excellent.
It is a lovely homely cottage in a beautifully quiet and secluded setting. beautifully quiet and secluded setting. We were able to sit out in the garden - the owner has thoughtfully supplied deckchairs. It is well located for car trips and also plenty of country walks. We won't hesitate to recommend Hillgate House to our friends and would love to return again.
It was peaceful, warm and comfortable. The house is in a lovely position - especially good to be able to walk straight out onto the moor. We didn't have to drive much at all.
1) Position and general location of the property 2) Really well equipped 3) Comfy beds with good quality bedclothes 4) Loads of information from the owners and previous guests
Location, quality of interior, lots of little extras, should be a higher star rating in my opinion!
