Hillgate House, Hemford

Perfect for parties of up to 5 people, Hillgate House was originally built in the 18th Century, when it was used as a farmhouse. Since then, it has been lovingly restored to retain many of its original features, such as exposed beams and a cast-iron stove, yet has been decorated in a modern, yet complementary style. There is a large, lawned garden from which you can enjoy the scenery provided by the Callow and the Corndon Hills, or simply kick back with a glass of wine and enjoy a spot of summertime dining. There are walking, cycling and horse-riding facilities close by and parking for up to 3 cars.

The market town of Bishop's Castle is nearby and here you can enjoy their weekly market or simply soak up the scenery from one of the many excellent pubs and restaurants. Hemford is also well-placed for many of Shropshire's main attractions, such as historic Shrewsbury, the charming town of Ludlow or the imposing Stokesay Castle. Railway enthusiasts will appreciate the elegance of the Severn Valley Railway and the World Heritage Centre at Ironbridge offers a glimpse of days gone by.

A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Reviews

Wow what a place, so quite and relaxing, lots of birds to watch in the morning with a coffee! our two dogs loved the garden which is very secure so no need to worry local walks are very good. Our dogs sleeped for a week when they got home. Only 10 minutes to local pubs and 20 minutes to local town, Shewsbury is worth a visit only 40 minute drive. Property was very home from home with all that you need for comfortable stay, the owners are always contactable if you need them and very helpful. So all I can say if you want a relaxing quite break in the countryside then this is the place.

The most beautiful cottage we have ever stayed in. Wonderful surroundings , just perfect for a restful relaxing break. Cannot wait to return, we had a fabulous week & simply fell in love with the cottage & area.

We stayed here for a family holiday over half term. The owner was very thoughtful and rung us before our stay and when we arrived there were helpful additions like lots of hand sanitiser and gloves and wipes. Cottage was lovely and clean but the Shepherds hut was out of use due to the cleaner using it for Covid cleaning precautions which was totally understandable. We had seen some reviews that there were no freezer facilities but there is a small freezer that was totally fine for our needs. Our two labradors loved the garden and did not want to leave. The garden is dog safe but if you have small dogs they could get out through the gate bars, but the owner did explain this in his phone call. Beautiful views and extremely quite, the main noise was the birds singing in the morning. Beds were comfortable and plenty of games and books in the lounge. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and all utensils you would need. I can understand why people come back time and time again. Only one negative, we knew there was no WiFi and had promised our son he could use data on his phone for the week but we did not know that the phone signal is very poor. However, this did not spoil our holiday

The cottage has such a lovely feel about it and you immediately felt at home. The garden was superb. It was spotlessly clean and had a rustic cottage feel - a typical country cottage. We loved the remoteness albeit there was a school just up the road, it was peaceful, full of wildlife and some superb walks although because the weather was so nice we mostly enjoyed chilling in the garden watching the farmer at work and the wildlife.

Rated by Mrs Longworth reviewed on 24th July 2016

We liked the peace and privacy of the cottage and the general isolation. Being able to let the dogs run free in the garden was a bonus. The cottage was well appointed and very comfortable; it felt like home almost straight away.

Rated by Dr Wilson reviewed on 10th July 2016

We had a lovely holiday. The atmosphere was very welcoming and we particularly enjoyed the garden. The cottage is very comfortable and stylish. The location is idyllic. Every effort was made to make our stay memorable.

The cottage and surroundings are beautiful and extremely dog friendly. The kitchen is very well fitted out with many more gadgets and utensils that we have come across in previous cottages. It really was a home from home stay set in a completely chill out place.

Rated by Mrs Dunning reviewed on 15th May 2016

Wonderfully dog friendly cottage! It has a large garden which the dogs and the grandchildren loved. Quiet location in beautiful countryside. We liked being woken up by the birds (especially the male pheasant). The owner is very helpful and should be proud of his property.

Rated by Mrs Wright reviewed on 24th April 2016

Hillgate House is a lovely home away from home. It has a nice secure garden for our two dogs, in a good location with hours of dogs walks if you turn right out of the gate. The beds are comfortable and have good quality bedding. There is a nice wood and coal burning stove in the front room and storage heaters to heat the rest of the house. We found the house to be very warm and cosy and can not wait to go back.

Rated by Mrs Shaw reviewed on 4th April 2016

Hillgate House is the perfect place for peace and tranquillity. There was everything you could possibly need in the cottage and the garden was perfect for bird watching. There is a lovely little walk from the cottage to the standing stones on the open moorland and Skylarks galore. If quiet countryside holidays are what you enjoyM then I would definitely recommend Hillgate House. It is beautiful.

Rated by Mrs Street reviewed on 1st April 2016

We had an excellent holiday! We have stayed in a variety of holiday cottages before and this was by far the best. Hillgate house was the perfect place to relax in peace and quiet with beautiful views over the country side to watch all the wildlife. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard; a log burner in the lounge made it very cosy on the colder days.

Rated by Mrs Townsend reviewed on 16th September 2015

Hillgate House gave us a warm and cosy welcome as we walked through the door, we instantly felt at home. Everything you might need is there. The bird life in the garden was excellent. The location is perfect, it was very peaceful with stunning walks from the gate. Looking forward to our next visit.

Rated by Mr Dibnah reviewed on 10th May 2015

A lovely cottage, very quiet in the country with no passing traffic. Everything was well kept and everything provided for. The best cottage we've stayed in - and we've stayed in a few! Walks in the surrounding area were really beautiful with views looking out over remarkable countryside. If you like bird watching they are encouraged in the garden and we saw some beauties really close up that we don't get in our own garden. A very relaxing holiday and plenty to do around and about if you wish.

Rated by Mr Harris reviewed on 9th May 2015

The location was wonderful with loads of wildlife and the cottage was beautiful.

Rated by Mrs Lawson reviewed on 1st April 2015

This House is beautiful, we really couldn't recommend it highly enough. The owners have clearly put a huge amount of work into making it the perfect country destination. Hillgate House has the best of both worlds, with a new bathroom, comfortable beds, Sky TV and double glazing to go with the old-world charm of a 300 year old stone farmhouse. We spent a week there over Christmas, and had one to remember.

Rated by Mrs Crombie reviewed on 3rd January 2015

Excellent accommodation, could not fault it in any way. The location is just perfect for getting away and sampling 'the Shropshire way,' could not ask for any more.

A beautiful country cottage in a wonderful quiet rural location. Many places of interest within easy reach both in Shropshire and in Wales. The owners had thought about the comfort of not only their guests but also their pets. They rang before we arrived to give directions and useful information and rang when we arrived home to check we had and enjoyed our stay and we certainly did! Perfect.

It is remote, cosy and very friendly. It is like home from home. The quality of cottage is just what we expected, we have been before and absolutely love it. There is no phone signal and no internet; brilliant for a family to get the board games out and really communicate. My family love this place.
