Location Details

The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafes, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Reviews

A beautiful cottage with fantastic attention to detail in decoration and finish. There was a lovely view from the location down the valley to the coast.

Just got back from fabulous long weekend, it was a very large property with fabulous views. Very well equipped. It was beautifully furnished - fell in love with bedroom furniture and the beds were so comfortable. Our host was friendly but not intrusive at all. There are two friendly goats in the next field who kept us amused. We lit the kitchen fire at night - not because it was cold - but because it added even more atmosphere to a very lovely place to stay.

Just got back from fabulous long weekend. Very large property with fabulous view. Very well equipped. Bread, butter, milk and eggs waiting for us on our arrival - a lovely gesture. The private road to the cottage is a little bumpy and steep in places but well worth it for the view. Beautifully furnished - fell in love with bedroom furniture and the beds were soooo comfortable. Our host was friendly but not intrusive at all. There are two friendly goats in the next field who kept us amused. Wonderful position, fields all round, and inside beautifully appointed. The owners, Mr & Mrs Bartram are meticulous. The accommodation is to the highest standards. A superb place to stay if you like walking, as you can walk from the door straight on to the Cleveland Way. There are two houses for self catering at Bousdale Farm. Although this one is perfect, the other is even better! We have stayed in both and hope to stay again many times!

The accommodation is the best we have ever stayed in. Being on the edge of the North York Moors and being able to walk straight onto the Cleveland Way from the front door, no need to drive. Surrounded by farmers fields, oil seed rape in full bloom, and the fields surrounded by forest. Lots of foot paths, excellent for mountain bikes.

Fabulous cottage, so spacious and well laid out. The en-suite in the master bedroom is amazing. We loved having the log stove on, purely for decoration, as the central heating works well.

We loved the property, it was warm and very comfortable. We loved the fact that we could park the car and there were walks direct from the property, in every direction.

This was our second visit to Bousdale, we had visited the farm before and the standards did not disappoint with the Mill Cottage. The friendliness and help of the owner was much appreciated and we all had a peaceful and relaxing holiday. We loved the position of the cottage and would not think twice of recommending to friends and family. Very good value for money. Loved it!
