The Malthouse, Cromford

The Malthouse is a wonderful conversion of Arkwright?s, Grade II listed former mill in Cromford. The cottage is detached and offers nine bedrooms with their own TVs with Freeview and a DVD player. These include a super king-size double with en-suite, two twin rooms, and a family bathroom on the lower ground floor, two king-size doubles and a twin on the ground floor with their own en-suite shower rooms, and a super king-size double, and two twin rooms on the first floor. Offering brilliant flexibility, all four twin rooms have zip/link beds. There is a family bathroom with a luxurious slipper bath, and three kitchens, one of which is on the first floor, and the other with a large, social dining area. There are also three sitting rooms, again one of which is on the ground floor and one on the first floor. Outside, there is a front courtyard with furniture, a rear lawned garden overlooking the mill pond with a patio and furniture, and off road parking for eight cars.

Location Details

The charming Peak village of Cromford is set in a wooded gorge by the River Derwent and is surrounded by tree-covered hills and cliffs. Cromford is known as the 'cradle of the Industrial Revolution' and attractions in and around the village reflect this. One of these is Cromford Mill, which has been fully restored and is now designated as a World Heritage Site. The village has three public houses and a variety of shops, however for more amenities the towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath are close by. Other attractions in the area include Gulliver's Kingdom family theme park, Chatsworth House and many more. This area has much to offer and makes a great base for a holiday.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Reviews

Great venue for a group get-together when your group needs lots of bathrooms and 3 separate kitchens and dining areas. Great for kids playing hide and seek. Historic features, old watermill, low beams, resident bats. Now for the negatives. Needs some general maintenance work. 2 rooms on the ground floor had nasty smells ?from drains or vermin. Lower ground bathroom has no lock on the door and the bedrooms appear to have no heating. Grill in oven in ground floor keeps cutting out every few minutes, therefore unusable. Showers are great, but temperature of water suddenly changes, possibly due to other people using other showers or flushing toilets.

I visited The Malthouse with work, we had a team build and needed somewhere big enough for the 10 of us, and this actually worked out cheaper than all of us stopping in separate hotels. We arrived and were delighted to find the property was every bit as good as the pictures on the internet. Tastefully decorated and almost everything you could need. My room was a nice size, had a double bed and an ensuite bathroom with rainforest shower. As you explore the building you find; 3 well equipped kitchens, 9 bedrooms (not all are ensuite so make sure you explore and get first dibs) and 2 lounges. It's quite clear that the owners have spent considerable amounts of money on the renovations. We were told we could get 4 cars outside the front, I can confirm that we managed, with some giggling around to get 7 cars onto the driveway. It was tight but entirely possible. It was set in beautiful surroundings. Near to Matlock and the peak district. We used this as a base to trip to the Monsal Trail, where we hired bikes and rode along the disused railway line taking in some amazing views. The only real downside I could see was the rumble of quarry trucks from dawn to dusk on the street outside. Seriously great place to stay!

Tired of stopping in your everyday hotel or B&B? Then may u suggest a mill. Yes, I said a mill. This one has obviously been transformed from an old mill to a glorious house. 3 levels of character and vintage charm coupled with modern technology. The place is presented beautifully. The rooms made up in an inviting manner, the inner workings of the old mill on show through the window in the downstairs kitchen and a delightful welcome basket (with chocolate and wine) really do make this place. Location wise, Matlock and Matlock Bath are literally a 5/10 mins drive round the corner and provide a variety of shops and entertainment when you feel the need to venture out. If you fancy a little walk instead then 2 mins walk down the road to Cromford you'll find a small variety of shops for food and drink. Take time out one night to have a drink or two in one of the pubs, it's well worth it. We've visited The Malthouse once and we're already talking of returning. Fantastic place.

This property is amazing and beautifully restored . The bedrooms are lovely and clean . We had to move pans and plates from one kitchen to another to cook but not really a problem . Would definitely recommend . There were only 10 of us so we could comfortably all fit in the large lounge upstairs , but I suspect this would be a challenge with larger numbers of people . The only negative was the dreadful smell in the lower ground floor bedroom / bathroom next door (, nearest the kitchen ) which we think was the sewers/ drains .

Beautifully appointed accommodation. Decorated to a very high standard. Loved the exposed gearing for the mill in bottom kitchen. On the subject of kitchens not sure why there are three. Would have perfered a larger lounge. It was a squeeze for the 16 of us. Parking arrangements are not ideal but we managed. Very well situated for the many attractions around Matlock.

Two grandparents, 8 parents and 6 children all enjoyed a fabulous Christmas in this extensive and character filled residence. The house offers a maze of rooms and plenty of larger sitting rooms and a long dining area allowing us all to eat together. The location is excellent, allowing us to enjoy Cromford and its mills on foot and some great hill walks just a short drive, or run, away. Highly recommended.

Amazing house, great location - just what we were looking for. Plenty of parking. The house is beautiful and all 17 of us had a fab weekend.

I loved it. So unusual, a great ratio of bathrooms to people and an amazing glass window with a lit up view of the old mill workings. It was clean and worked really well for our group that ranged from 60 to 3 weeks old. Would certainly go book again.

We were a party of 17 friends, the property over three floors had plenty of space to accommodate us all yet also had smaller areas to spend some quiter time if needed, the three kitchens had everything that you would need, the ground floor one seated 18 so we all got together in the evenings for our meal, during the day the smaller kitchens were used for breakfast and lunch, the bedrooms were all different, clean and comfortable and all the bathrooms were of a high standard. The stone steps going down to the lower ground floor may be a problem if someone had mobility problems so be aware of this, overall is a stunning, quirky property and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The pretty, small village if Cromford had a few shops and was a nice 20 minutes walk into Matlock Bath. The ownner of the property gave all the information and directions needed to make our stay an enjoyable one, we would definitely recommend this property to our friends and would happily pay a return visit.

We loved the layout of the rooms in the Malthouse, our party of 17 had room to all be together or go off into smaller groups, it is a stunning, quirky building.

Lovely property with plenty of character.

Rated by Mr Price reviewed on 15th December 2015

It was the ideal place for a three generational family holiday. We could all eat together and be in the big lounge together yet there was also plenty of space so that the teenagers could hive off together or the children play without us feeling on top of each other. We thought The Malthouse to be a fascinating and beautiful place to stay and found every comfort, no expense spared. Ideal for celebrating our Golden Wedding. Our children and grandchildren thought it was great.

There was 18 people in this property and it never felt cramped. It was very spacious and a lovely quirky property. The outside space was great and the location was ideal.

The house was very clean, comfortable and well equipped with lovely décor throughout. Flexible living accommodation over the three floors in the house easily catered for our large family of three generations. Would definitely recommend and will probably book again in the near future. There was lots to see and do in the nearby area. Overall we had a fabulous holiday. The house is in a gorgeous setting with lovely walks and scenery right on the doorstep. We were sad to leave!

Rated by Mrs Brady reviewed on 16th June 2015

An excellent choice for a large family, with plenty of room for everyone to have their own space when needed. Although Cromford is a small village it had everything we needed for shopping and eating out.

Rated by Mrs Hill reviewed on 30th May 2015

The standard of the accommodation and furnishings were first class. Everything down to small details was good, for example; enough bins, cutlery and cooking equipment for a large party.

Rated by Mrs Temple reviewed on 10th May 2015

"We loved the unusual layout, the amount of space and the many items of kitchen equipment. The garden was fantastic and the mill workings were a fascinating backdrop. Crompton is lovely and we had a brilliant time. Definitely hope to return."

A large group of us stayed here over Easter weekend and it was fantastic. The house is beautifully decorated to a very high standard, everyone was amazed and talked all weekend about how nice it was. The owners were extremely accommodating and helpful (they live just next door) and were kind enough to start the cleaning around us when we weren't quite ready to leave at 10am (although we had been told well in advance several times that we had to be out by no later than 10!) The house is in Cromford, a small village but it has everything you need - a big pub, great fish and chip shop and a convenience store selling most things. It's also a pleasant 20 minute walk away from Matlock Bath. The house has 3 living rooms and three separate kitchens, although one of the kitchens has seating for all 18 guests it is a shame that there isn't one big living space. I think it would be perfect if you were 3/4 smaller families going away together but for one large party it could be a little bit disjointed. In saying that I would definitely book this house again as it's just so beautiful.

This is an outstanding property with everything you will need. The house is furnished to the highest standard possible. We couldn't recommend this highly enough. Brilliant.

The cottage was out of this world. The interior was outstanding and each room had been designed with care and that warm, homely feeling was felt in each and every room in the cottage. Each and every one of us loved it there and will most definitely be returning.

The property was the right size for a big family gathering. The quality furnishings and linens together with the high standard of equipment. An absolutely stunning place to stay.

Rated by Mr Cooper reviewed on 1st March 2015

We used it for the family, 18 in total, to meet up and prepare for my daughters wedding. We felt so special as everything was top quality and beautiful. Each bathroom was different and with the latest fashion fittings. Had superb showers etc. The beds were very comfy and the rooms spacious and attractive. The 3 kitchen diners were perfect for so many people and we all ate together in the big one surrounded by history with the mill wheel lit up at the end. The lounges were just like home and we all relaxed together. The little touches like TVs, music centres etc. made it just perfect.

The Malthouse was perfect for our 40th birthday celebrations! There was plenty of room for everyone! In a fantastic location as well, we really loved being able to walk into Matlock Bath from the cottage! Overall a fabulous holiday!

The house is an interesting conversion of an old mill. The rooms are comfortable. We thought the place might have been cold for our Winter stay, but it was lovely and warm. Very high quality equipment was provided - Bang and Olufson Tv's in every room!

This property was outstanding, the description and photos simply do not do it justice. The owners were great and extremely helpful. The village of Cromford is lovely and very well positioned for the Peak District and activities in Matlock.

Rated by Miss Hopwood reviewed on 20th September 2014

The property was absolutely beautiful, spacious, clean, well positioned and beyond comfortable. The house was decorated with precision and care and was designed to give lots of separate living spaces which is perfect for large groups and allowed everyone their own space. Beautiful, beautiful bathrooms and every bedroom had a character of its own. The entire property is just filled with every amenity you can think of - great kitchen facilities, games, TVs, iPod docs, DVDs etc. The position was perfect for exploring - Cromford is a lovely village and Matlock/Matlock Bath is steeped in history and very quaint. Lots of villages just a stones through away - Bakewell, Tissington, Wirksworth etc and lots to see and do. The owners were absolutely lovely and went out of their way to make our holiday enjoyable. They live on the site but were never intrusive and were always on hand to help.
