The historic city of York is within a reasonable distance and offers an array of historic attractions, including the medieval shopping street, the Shambles.

We arrived late after car trouble and were pleased to find that Wrelton is a beautiful little village with lots of character . The owner of the cottage was friendly / approachable and showed us to Croft Head Cottages only entrance which is a traditional low door ( I am 6'1" and the top of the door met my eye brows ) and so bobbing down was necessary for me and our teenage son but my wife managed to clear it with a bit to spare . On entering the cottage we found the compact kitchen/lounge/diner which includes an attractive fire place & log burner . The kitchen area of the room was equipped with a free standing cooker , washing machine , fridge and microwave oven but little available cupboard space . The sofa and accompanying chairs appeared to be a little ' tired ' and were not as comfortable as we are used to . When I opened the door to the stairs I was a little surprised at how steep and uneven they appeared to be ( the wife had forgotten to mention that aspect ) . I was able to ascend the stairs with a little effort but had to be more aware of my footing on the way down because some steps were higher than others ( the properties only WC / BATHROOMS are upstairs ) . Watch out for a couple of low beams upstairs . Our stay was relatively peaceful but punctuated by a few sessions of noisy aircraft manoeuvres from the local RAF air bases - I understand that this issue is totally out of the owners control and only mention it in the interest of an honest review of our stay . The cottage on the whole was clean and tidy with some attractive features but some of the furnishings were tired and in need of owner attention - not least the mattress on the double bed which was uncomfortable and seemed to have some kind of structure down its middle which at times made us feel like we were falling out of bed . Everything said this cottage offers value for money in an area where accommodation can be very costly but personally speaking l like a little more space and comfort and so l would not consider staying here again .... SORRY .
Situated in a very nice village, the cottage had everything that I needed and was very comfortable, with a lovely patio area to sit and relax in.
Owner had vouchers ready for us when we arrived for local attractions we could snip from the local newspaper. Property is well located for trips to Flamingoland, Scarborough and Whitby via the steam train which the kids loved and was a great family day. At the same time their are plenty of historic abbeys or York is half hour drive with park and ride into the town. The local pub was very friendly, but a bit dowdy for my liking, only because I prefer a bit more life, some music and maybe sky sports on. For that you have to travel into Pickering where the only pub I can suggest is The Royal Oak or the Wine bar in the high street. Everywhere else was a bit pricey, I expect because they rely on the tourist season to a degree. Im used to paying £60-70 for a meal for two adults and two kids, but here it was nearer £90. The cottage itself though was clean and tidy and served our needs very well. I like to be left alone when Im on holiday to just get on with what I want and I have had stays at places before where I felt the owners were over friendly and wanted to chat every five minutes. The owners were friendly, let us know where we were if we needed them, but left us to it. Others have mentioned the stairs, and for very young kids it just wouldnt work, but we had a 10 and 8 year old and they had no problems and were happy to have a bedroom to themselves. The TV is small and could be made bigger, but I watched the Matrix on it ok, and just goes to prove that tvs have got maybe to crazy big! All in all a good home from home. I also found Sykes Cottages were a pleasure to deal with to make the booking.
Friendly owners and nice accommodation in a lovely village with a very good pub and meals.
The location is excellent for touring the Moors and Wolds with easy access to the coast. Great for walking. The owners are readily available if needed, but leave you alone if not. The cottage is all you need for a holiday, with the log fire a wonderful bonus.
The cottage was a perfect location for our break in Yorkshire. It was very close to everything that we wanted to do.
Croft Head cottage is ideally located for visiting the attractions and countryside of North Yorkshire.
Good cosy cottage, interesting and quirky. In a charming village, in a convenient location for many places of interest. Good friendly local pub an easy walk away.
Lovely cottage in a great location.
The cottage was welcoming, and it was obvious that it had been prepared with attention to every detail.
The location is a wonderful place to just relax and enjoy the silence.
Yorkshire tea on arrival and yummy biscuits were great. Brilliant wood burner.
The cottage is really well presented and the en suite in the 2nd bedroom was a bonus for our teenage daughter! Everything we wanted to see and do was within an hours drive so the location really worked for us. Would definately recommend this cottage to others. The living, dining, kitchen is compact but has everything you need. I imagine it would be very cosy in winter with the log burner going!
Lovely, well equiped little cottage in a gorgeous setting. Perectly located for travelling to nearby attractions. We appreciated all the little touches the owner set out for our arrival, esp the choc biccies! Very clean and this is the first holiday we've booked where we didn't need to buy lots of products and bits and bobs for cleaning etc. Our girls loved the fact there was a trampoline and table tennis to use in the barn outside and that they had their own en-suite! If you're looking for the tradition "cottage" feel holiday, this is the cottage to go for. 5*'s all the way! We will def be back sometime soon.
The second bedroom having its own facilities was excellent. Location was ideally suited for the places we wanted to visit.
A beautiful little cottage, I would move in there if possible. The tea and biscuits on arrival were great.
Lovely little Victorian farm worker cottage and very well finished by the current friendly owners. Turned out to be a very good, central location for visiting local towns and walking in the North Yorks Moors. Everything was only 10s of minutes away!
We loved this cottage. Extremely clean and so beautifully decorated that I (being an architect and interior designer myself) was wondering if the landlords were interior designers. We loved Yorkshire - spectacular nature and old architecture!
Lovely cottage situated in a quiet hamlet outside Pickering made it central to our explorations standards at the cottage were very good and the owners freindly and approachable would certainaly reccomend this property to friends and family
Definitely a great place to stay if you want a quiet home, not too far from York. The kids (10 and 12) enjoyed being on their own floor. You have everything you need and more in the small but adequately furnished family room. The washing machine is a great plus. The area is fantastic for walking and taking a tour on a steam train. Maybe less suitable for a family with teenagers.
The location was ideal for our holiday to visit most tourist attractions.
The welcome pack of food was a lovely touch and there was a very good provision of basic toiletries and cleaning equipment. The cottage was really clean and full of character. We very much enjoyed all aspects of our holiday.
The property is really lovely. So much individual space in a small cottage. The washing machine is a great plus!
The quality and standards achieved by the owners were very good. We found the location of Croft Head Cottage excellent, as it was central to all the places we wanted to visit. The pub in the village served quality food at very reasonable prices and it added to the enjoyment of our break. The owner greeted us on arrival and gave us the keys and any relevant information and left us to it, which is exactly as we like it, but also left contact numbers if there was any problems so top marks to him
A beautiful cottage in a very pretty village. A lovely place to relax - we were made very welcome by the owners - who were close at hand if we needed them. Thank you.
Very quiet, relaxed atmosphere. The owners were very friendly, and the welcome pack was a nice thought.
It was a beautiful cottage, immaculately presented. It was just right for our little family. The owners were lovely too. Great for visiting the area - very central with lots around to visit and explore.
The owners were extremely welcoming and we appreciated the tea and biscuit tray on arrival. The cottage was exactly as we expected it to be and looked just like it did in the brochure.the location was perfect for exploring the coast, the Moors and the city of York. the village was pretty and had a good local pub and there were good restaurants near by. The whole holiday was fantastic and the cottage didn't disappoint. We had a great time.
The cottage was lovely and the location was excellent for exploring the Coast, the Moors and the city of York. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The area was extremely attractive and there was a huge amount of things to do and see - we were never stuck for something to do.
Wow; we received a warm welcome not just when we arrived but everytime we met our hosts during our stay. They offered advice on places to visit, where to eat and even how to get there. The cottage is beautifully decorated and located; we dont usually visit the same area twice, but if we where ever in the location there is only one place to stay - HERE!
We really enjoyed our stay in Werlton North Yorkshire and would recommend the cottage and Sykes .However i think the lounge kittchen area could be improved and as a overall opinion as we have stayed in two of your cottages i think an investment in better TV entertainment ie freeveiw with at least a 28" screen
The scenery from the cottage was lovely.
We enjoyed the freedom to do what we liked from a good base.
Cottage was really nice and clean. Really good location.
Due to the worst August weather in 100 years, we cancelled the camping and called Sykes for a last minute booking of anything – they came up trumps! We were so lucky that the owner presented Croft Head Cottage for rental the day before we were looking. In the words of my nine-year old, 'this cottage is awesome!' Once the word gets around this is one property that will never again be available for a last minute booking! The beautiful cottage, idyllic village location and the family made this a special holiday - thank you.
A very attractive and comfortable property with a very warm and friendly welcome! The local pub provides very good meals at excellent value.
Very welcoming, everything was carefully thought out.
