Having sold our property, my husband and I needed somewhere to stay for 5 weeks, whilst 'working from home'. Well it felt like home the minute we arrived, a warm friendly welcome from Joanne & Martin, not forgetting the dogs. Waiting for us was a tray of lovely treats, such as homemade banana loaf, jam, eggs and other goodies. The cottage has eco-friendly heating, very clean and cosy. It is well equipped with essentials for both adults and children, also a good selection of DVD's & books. There is sufficient parking at the front and back of the cottage. Joanne provided us with delicious homemade bread (cheese & sundried tomato), banana loaf, eggs and Jam every Friday (for a small cost). Joanne and Martin were on hand to deal with a couple of small issues, which were addressed immediately. Would recommend for a peaceful break away.

We stayed at The Old Bothy for a long weekend, to use as a base while attending our nieces wedding at Blaithewaite House. Perfect base very clean accommodation with a few little extras homemade scones supplied on our arrival by our host Joanne, and we also purchased some free range eggs, homemade wholemeal bread and Apple crumble all excellent thankyou. We had a little trip out to siloith on the Sunday well worth a visit lovely weather perfect day, will definitely return and stay again at the old bothy. Thankyou Joanne

We stayed a week at the cottage and really enjoyed our stay. It's immaculately appointed - really clean, and with everything you could need if you are staying with small children (high chair, cutlery, bed guard, toys, books etc.). It's in a lovely peaceful location, and a great jumping off point for the north Lake District and the Solway coast, as well as having lovely local villages, walks, cafes and pubs to explore. Joanne was an exceptional host - nothing was too much trouble and she really made us feel welcome on her family farm. She also provided the option of ordering from a small selection of her local produce and homemade food which was wonderful - my 5 year old claimed her cottage pie was the best thing she'd ever eaten! We'd love to stay again and would definitely recommend it.

We went to stay for a few days with our baby and had a lovely time at The Old Bothy. Joanne was so helpful both before we arrived and whilst we were there. We drive an electric car, and she very helpfully told us where the nearby charging points were (they haven’t installed one yet). They provided lots of toys for the baby, a high chair and a travel cot. There was even some delicious home baking to greet us when we arrived! We’re hoping to be back very soon!

We’ve just returned from our 3rd stay at the Old Bothy and it was just as fabulous as always. Joanne and her family have gone out of the way to make the place feel clean and secure during the coronovirus restrictions. The cottage was immaculately clean and lots of soap and hand sanitiser were available. Joanne and her family wear PPE to clean the cottages which we can vouch for as we saw them doing it! They had even managed to still add some of the personal touches we love such as books for any children visiting. I believe they rotate the books to prevent any infection risk. My little boy is now 4 and loved watching the cows being fed and seeing the tractors etc going past on a daily basis. It is such a family friendly place to stay in such peaceful surroundings and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Looking forward to going back again soon!

My wife,my 1 year old little man and 3 year old girl and I stayed here for two nights. What a perfect little get away it is. The hosts Joanne and Martin are lovely people and they thought of everything that we could need for our stay with the little ones! Lots of indoor and outdoor toys to play with, DVDs to watch and books to read. Daisy said her favourite part of the whole trip was to help feed the cows, the kids both loved it! Thank you for your friendliness and letting us stay in one of your beautiful cottages. We would love to come back!

Booked a short break here at the last minute to extend our holiday in The Lakes and were not disappointed. Lovely home from home in a beautiful farm setting. The cottage was clean, homely and well equipped. Plenty of games, books and even a football goal for the children. Would highly recommend a stay here.

This cottage is fantastic and exceeded every expectation we had. Ideally located....not too far from town but far enough to make you feel like you are in the middle of no where. The cottage has been converted to an excellent standard, with all the home comforts you would need and the log burner at night was just the ticket. The owners are simply lovely and can not do enough to make sure you have everything you need. There are dogs but they are very friendly and love a doggy treat. It is a working farm and loved being able to help bottlfeed the calf. Try it you won’t be disappointed!

Ideal location to explore the beautiful Lake District and situated in a lovely peaceful setting. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and Joanne the owner couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. We couldn't have been any happier with the cottage and can't recommend highly enough.

We stayed here for 2 nights and we're blown away by the accommodation and also the hosts. Joanne is friendly, approachable and helpful! The Old Bothy was fantastic and the little touches made by Joanne did not go unnoticed. There were age appropriate toys left for our son which he loved. The kitchen is excellently stocked with everything you need and more! The farm is in a fantastic location close to different attractions, shops and walks. We would definitely recommend staying and hopefully will be returning in the future.

Joanne was a very welcoming and considerate host and the local area has glorious scenery and lots to do. Overall a wonderful holiday, I would definitely recommend staying here.

The Old Bothy is the perfect cottage for a holiday in The Lakes. It's spacious and cosy all at the same time, having everything you could ask for for a home away from home. Surrounding views are glorious and it is within easy reach of a number of places to visit. We recommend a drive to Honiston Pass and Castlerigg Stone Circle. Joanne & family are the perfect hosts, you couldn't feel more welcome. We loved it so much we stayed an additional night! Thanks for a lovely stay. Elaine & Darren Ward

We stayed here for a three day weekend and it was utterly perfect! Joanne was a warm host, very helpful and told us about great walks to do in the surrounding areas. Joanne was great on communication while booking, and throughout. The accomodation was extremely clean, and very comfortable (the beds were the best I've slept in!). It was very peaceful and quiet, with a lot of space for kids to play. There were baby cows, lovely sheep and two gorgeous friendly dogs, it was heaven!

We stayed for a weekend stay at The Old Bothy in Red Hall Farm Holiday Cottages in April and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The accommodation is lovely: top quality furnishings, full of comfort and character. It was so interesting to see photographs of how the building had been converted from the bothy where the farmhands used to sleep to a spacious but cosy cottage complete with log burner and, beams with hi-spec kitchen, bathroom and furnishings. The master bedroom with its high ceiling was lovely with a comfortable bed. There was also a private outdoor space from where we could enjoy tranquil views and experience life on the farm – it would be a great place for children to stay. We had a warm welcome from Joanne who brought us a basket of home-made scones and a jar of delicious Lakeland jam. Joanne was very helpful in giving advice and information (also very kind in posting back to us various belongings we had left!). The log basket starter kit was also a great bonus. We’d never stayed in this part of the Lakes before and were really impressed by the area – it’s close to Cockermouth which is now my favourite Lake District town and the pleasant town of Wigton, but it’s also near the coast and Solway Area of Natural Beauty which was something of a revelation. Then, of course, the Lakes National Park itself is right on the doorstep. Another plus was the wealth of great pubs and hotels nearby where (unlike as is often the case in Keswick), it was possible to get a seat. And the very reasonable price was for a three-night stay which came as a pleasant surprise as we thought it was for two (although we had been told on booking), so we got to stay another night!

We have just had a fantastic week in the Old Bothy. The cottage is spotlessly clean and really well equipped with everything we needed and more! The owners had even provided age appropriate toys for our 2 year old son which he played with more then his own toys from home! The cottage is perfect for small children with a lovely enclosed space at the back with ride along toys and a big grassed area with a slide. There were also calves and lambs which we were able to feed. Joanne and Martin were so welcoming and more than happy to help and answer any questions we had. We would thoroughly recommend staying here and wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

We spent a great week here in March, excellently located for the north of the lakes and the bottom of Scotland. The accommodation is very well appointed within everything you could possibly need. The conversion has been completed to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean. We received a really warm welcome from the owners (the dogs were also very friendly too - always made an appearance when you get back at the end of the day.) and the welcome gifts were extremely tasty. Lots of really nice touches that makes the accommodation stand out from others, guests book with recommendations of places to visit, to eat or walk worked really well for us. 10 out of 10 for us - thank you

Five stars! My husband, daughter and I stayed here over Christmas. We were very lucky as there happened to be a cancellation and were able to stay. The owner, Joanne, is lovely and really made us feel at home. There were freshly baked mince pies waiting for us and a big, beautiful Christmas tree and decorations. The cottage is gorgeous and spacious but feels warm and cosy too. It is spotlessly clean and everything was laid out perfectly. My daughter is 2 years old and Joanne had put children’s books, toys, and dolls out for her to play with, which she did! I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others. If only everywhere we stayed was so nice!

We have just spent a week over New Year at The Old Bothy and have already booked to come back again this year. My husband and I have been staying in cottages for the last 18 years and this is one of the best we have stayed in. The cottage is warm, cosy and spotless it has everything you can want or need and more. The log fire has been a real treat on cold winter evenings. It is a real home from home and it is so peaceful and quite. We have truly had a wonderful break and have slept so well and fully recharged our batteries. The welcome basket was a lovely touch and very much appreciated. The owner Joanne is a lovely lady and is there to help with anything if required but she is in no way intrusive. Already looking forward to our next stay.

We stayed in the Old Bothy - a great cottage in a nice part of the country. Big nice rooms, safe outside play area for children and accessible from main roads. We had trips out to Buttermere, Derwent Water, Keswick, Carlisle - all nearby and easy to get to. Also had a look around some of the Solway coast towns and villages - I had never been here before and it was really good to explore the north Cumbria area for the first time - really pretty coastline and nice beaches. Definitely would recommend it.

We could not pick fault with The Old Bothy at all! The owners Joanne and Martin were meticulous in everything, especially their homemade scones and jam, which were a treat! We had our own play area for our son James where he could admire the young calfs. The Old Bothy itself if lovely and has been furnished tastefully providing everything you need for a short or long getaway. We are used to being located centrally in Keswick but this did not affect our holiday as the distance to nearby attractions is minimal. Our cotbed broke but Joanne was quick to replace it with a choice of three of hers :). We will definitely be returning at some point preferably when it's colder so we can light the log burner and enjoy the warmth!

We stayed in the Old Bothy for 2 nights with our 1 and almost 3 year olds. The hosts were so welcoming and made our lives so easy by thinking of everything including travel cot with sheets, high chair, toys for the kids and yummy homemade treats. They gave us ideas of things to do locally and left a huge range of leaflets and recommendations book for us to look through. The outdoor space is perfect for children and is so beautiful. There are plenty of local pubs and places to eat a short drive away and Keswick is nice and close. It was a lovely relaxing weekend break and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Thank you.

We have just spend the most wonderful week in this lovely cottage. Family orientated, secure, charming, welcoming, cosy...it's a delight! It met all our needs and more. The hosts were wonderful and had thought of everything. A basket of homemade goodies welcomed us, along with the opportunity to purchase more throughout the week. The novelty of ordering the local ice cream man delighted our wee ones. They had the firsthand opportunity to experience farm life by helping feed the calves at night, which they loved. A secure garden with toys allowed us to enjoy a warm, quiet coffee! The house itself was immaculate and kitted out to the highest of standards. Perfect for relaxing at night, cosied by the log burning stove. We filled our week with local activities and some further down into the lakes...there is still so much to do! We'll be staying here when we return

Just returned from a 10 night stay at the Old Bothy and had a fantastic holiday. The accommodation was superb, clean and modern but retaining original features such as exposed stone work and beams which was great. Joanne and Martin were welcoming hoasts providing everything needed for a family stay - Joanne even left out games and books suitable for my children. The kids loved being on the farm with all the animals - petting the farm dogs, feeding the calves and even getting to see a calf being born. There is plenty to do in the area as only 20 minutes from Keswick and the beautiful Lake District scenery, even the weather was good! I would definitely recommend The Old Bothy and hope to visit again.

Stumbled across this cottage on Trip Advisor whilst searching for accommodation in Carlisle area as we were looking for a last minute booking in the area. Couldn't believe our luck (the owners had had a cancellation which we were fortunate enough to make use of). The cottage is spacious, spotless and very well equipped (I loved having a big TV on the wall in the master bedroom). It was a shame we didn't make as much use of the outdoor seating area as the weather was quite windy whilst we were there, but I think it would be a nice place to sit and have breakfast in the morning. The owners were really welcoming, and very easy to chat to and we were very impressed with all the work that they had done around the farm to promote wildlife conservation. We will definitely be back!

We have enjoyed self catering family holidays for the last 30 years. The high quality of this accommodation is, however, by far the best we have encountered in all that time. The welcome, friendliness and care provided by the owners also added much to our holiday. The surrounding countryside and the quick and easy access to The Lake District enabled us to enjoy several walks as well as trips further afield.

In over 30 years of holidaying in self catering properties in the UK, this is by far the best we have stayed in, in all that time. The friendliness, warmth and care by the owners added to our enjoyment, as did the very high standard of the furnishings and equipment. If you want a holiday in this beautiful corner of Cumbria, then you need look no further. During our stay we enjoyed visits to genteel Silloth, Keswick and the northwestern fells, where we completed the 'High Stile' ridge walk in superb weather, ending with a refreshing shandy at 'The Fish' in Buttermere! For variety, we also visited Ravenglass (for 'Ratty') and Glasgow by train from nearby Wigton. A splendid cottage indeed!

We had a lovely stay at The Old Bothy. The presentation and décor are to a very high standard throughout. We had a warm welcome from the owner who has put together a comprehensive list of attractions for families (and those without little ones) which kept us busy for our whole stay. The cottage has a wonderful mix of cosy features and attractive original features. Our 2 year old loved petting the farm dogs and watching the calves feeding. The play garden was ideal for letting off a bit of toddler steam too!

Our first proper family holiday away from the distractions and work of home and we picked the perfect place. We stayed in 'the old bothy' and it was so nice, the house itself is a really creative use of a barn and is really relaxing. Every room is great and very modern. It's on a proper farm so you get the feeling you are away from home (unless you are a farmer I suppose) which for us was perfect. It's also close enough to the big things we wanted to see like Hadrians wall, Carlisle castle, the north of the Lake District. The owners are lovely, helpful, friendly and genuine. They made our stay feel like we were just part of their normal every day life and not at all like we were paying guests. Which for us was a massive plus. We are definitely coming back here.

We were so overjoyed with our stay at The Old Bothy. You can clearly tell how much love and effort has gone into the refurbishment - the property was fab, we could not fault anything. The master bedroom looks quite small in the pictures online, they really do not do the room justice - a beautiful big room with exposed beams and high ceilings was such a pleasant surprise. We will most certainly be recommending and staying again at The Old Bothy. The owners really care about the guests and do the utmost to make sure you have a pleasant stay.

The owners cannot do enough to make your stay a memorable one and the little extra touches add to the experience. Our boys aged 11 and 9 loved helping with feeding the calves as well as exploring the farm and it's surrounding fields. We would recommend this without hesitation.

We had a fantastic week staying in the Old Bothy. The facilities were excellent and our kids loved playing with the owners' dogs around the farm. It was lovely to relax in such a well appointed cottage, done up to a modern standard but with some charming features as well. Being greeted with freshly baked bread and scones and with an optional tour around the farm, it was more than just a holiday cottage. We all had a lovely time.

Lovely barn conversion. A little bit of luxury. Stayed warm and cosy with minimal effort from the eco-efficient heaters (despite the winter cold outside). Owners very welcoming. Probably the best holiday cottage I've stayed in. Can't fault it. Will go again.

What a wonderful conversion, extremely we'll equipped and spotless. We arrived early evening to a warm welcome, the wood burner was lit and a welcome basket left. From collecting the keys to returning them we had a great weekend at the Old Bothy. The views both day and night are stunning and it's so peaceful and relaxing. A perfect retreat, will definitely visit again.

We have just returned from a lovely relaxing week at this gorgeous cottage. We had a very warm welcome from Joanne who greeted us with a welcome pack of home produce and had actually lit a fire so the cottage was warm and welcoming. The cottage was spacious and immaculately clean, the furniture and kitchen appliances were of a high standard and the furnishings were of good quality. The owners were always ready to offer help and assistance. The cottage is an ideal location for the lakes, Gretna, Carlisle etc. We would definitely recommend this cottage for the perfect getaway, even if the weather is bad there is a lovely log burner, a TV downstairs and in both bedrooms and free Wi-Fi.

The owners were very friendly but not imposing, they hit the right balance. The location was ideal for us away from the touristy area of the lakes but close enough to get to the heart of the lakes in 30 minutes. The cottage was very recently converted from a barn and everything was most impressive.

We had a super time at the 'Old Bothy'. The accommodation was excellent and very clean. Some lovely touches with the home baked welcome pack and free Wifi which reflects the care and extra attention by the Baird family. Be sure to take advantage of the offer to feed the calves with Will, our son loved it. Martin also offered a tour of the farm and surrounding ground which we greatly appreciated, a highlight of our holiday. His passion for conservation and interest in wildlife is infectious. We look forward to returning soon ! A+ recommended

I was privileged to be the first person ever to stay at The Old Bothy, I experienced a wonderful stay and found the owners to be exceptional people. They are warm and friendly as are their dogs who come to greet you as you approach. The Old Bothy was tranquil and had outstanding views of beautiful countryside. in spite of the fact that I was actually staying there whilst working in the area, I was able to enjoy the surroundings ambience and peace during evenings and weekends. The quality of fixtures and fittings were also very good. A tastefully decorated cottage which cannot be fully appreciated on the photographs online. I was able to have friends for dinner and they were equally impressed by the high specifications and quality of the cottage. A fabulous location for visiting the many lakes or the breathtaking views of the keystone pass which is about 30 minutes drive away. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage, it's beautiful location and the hospitality shown by its owners Mr and Mrs Baird.
