Great location if you want to explore the North Lakes or Scotland. Wonderful for our family of all ages to get together. Fabulous accommodation and hosts. We have booked our third visit.

We have stayed here since they first opened & absolutely love it. Everything that you need is in this cottage including age appropriate toys. It is always spotlessly clean although I can’t say it is the same when we leave. Our grandchildren love coming here & are always excited to arrive but sad to leave. They love the dogs & calves but this time we had the excitement of baby owls to watch. This is our home from home & we’ll be back in December for our 2 weeks!! Thanks Joanne & Martin so much for making our stay wonderful!

We booked this cottage last minute for a few nights’ break and couldn’t have been happier when we arrived to this beautifully converted home. The place was spotless and all fittings and furnishings of a high standard. We instantly felt at home. Joanne and Martin were so friendly and the welcome tray was a lovely touch. (Best banana loaf we’ve ever had! ) It was a treat to help feeding the calves, and just sitting out on the patio listening to birdsong and watching the swallows diving about was so relaxing. Could’ve happily stayed a lot longer and will definitely visit again! Just a tip if you’re thinking of booking - booking direct with the owners via their website is cheaper than going through a booking agency.

The Old Grainstore is one of the best holiday cottages I've stayed in; it's extremely spacious and modern, was spotlessly clean (important in these Covid times!) and has everything you need. Joanne & Martin were incredibly welcoming and really helpful with advice and tips of things to do locally, such as options for bike rides. I'd love to stay again sometime!

4 friends and I stayed here Fri-Mon to climb Scafell Pike and enjoy a country escape from London. It's about and hour and 20 drive from the mountain through incredibly dramatic and beautiful scenery. It's very conveniently located for visiting Keswick and also Bassenthwaite Lake (which we swam in... Brrrr... beautiful but cold in September). The accommodation itself was scrupulously clean and well maintained. The rooms were all enormous with lovely high ceilings and decor and furniture that was extremely comfortable and restful (the beds are divine after a trek up a mountain and the whole place is light and airy and fresh). The enormous bath was also a bonus! Also, we couldn't have wished for a better host. We had a small accident (too embarrassing and daft to detail) but our host was ever so kind and understanding. We really appreciated the lovely cakes, jam and eggs that were in the cottage when we arrived as well. Our stay couldn't have been better. Highly recommended.

We had a fabulous week, Grandma, Grandad, Mum, Dad, 3 3/4 year old & 16 month old. Joanne & Martin extremely friendly hosts who genuinely care that you are happy. Well equipped, child/toddler friendly, spotless & very comfortable. Great showers & comfortable beds. Lots of thoughtful touches. Great location, good access to walks & the beach. Must visit the Howk in Caldbeck. Wigton will cater for most purchases. The banana bread & crumbles by Joanne were delicious. Our granddaughters loved Bramble, Poppy & Lily the extremely friendly, but well behaved farm dogs. Would definitely recommend, especially if you want peace & quiet. We will be back!

We’ve just returned from the best week here. Joanne and Martin are absolutely lovely, couldn’t do enough for you. Our boys adored watching the the calves being fed by Joanne and then being asked to name them our suggestions are Alma and Marie (after the boys great grandma’s). The boys loved the three dogs especially Lily as she kept running up and down whilst they played football. The cottage pie and apple crumble where delicious. And the ice cream van was ace perfect end to a few days. The location is just fabulous so much to see and do 7 days was not enough so we can’t wait to visit again. Thank you for an amazing week :-)

We had such an excellent time here. The owners were really friendly and bent over backwards to make our stay perfect. Once they found out we had a 3 year old with us, they made sure there were lots of toys and books to play with, and provided a bed guard. My daughter was so excited to feed the cows on the farm! The kitchen is better stocked than my own, and they had homemade scones out for us when we got there. The beds were really comfy and the showers lovely. Would happily stay again and would recommend.

We have just returned from a fantastic family holiday at The Old Grainstore. The cottage is beautiful , spacious and very well laid out. It also had 3 toilets which was very handy having 3 children .They have thought of everything . The owners Joanne and Martin are really lovely .My kids 14 ,10 and 9 loved it especially their 3 dogs Bramble,Poppy and Lily who are so friendly and love a good cuddle . The welcome basket on arrival had Banana bread which was so tasty , raspberry jam and eggs that were all double yolkers . They also have a very good enclosed play area with football goals, slides and swing ball which is a very good idea especially for younger children. We also enjoyed seeing the young cows right next door to out cottage . The kids also enjoyed a visit from the ice cream van and was so nice hearing the tinkle as he drove in. It is very central to loads of lovely attractions , Lowther castle, Lake District wildlife park , Keswick Allonby beach and many many more .We can't wait to go back as I think this was a very good find for a very enjoyable family holiday .Thank you .x

Have stayed here 9 times now (that's how much we like it). What makes this cottage so good are the owners Martin and Joanne. They really make you feel welcome and can not do enough for you. The cottage is always spotlessly clean and well maintained. It's location is great too, halfway between Keswick and Carlisle which is great for easy access to the mountains/lakes and also if you fancy a trip into Southern Scotland. I would and have recommended the cottage to anyone and in fact have already booked our 10th visit for next year. It a great place to stay.

A beautifully renovated barn on a working dairy farm. Amazing location and very friendly owners who met us on arrival and advised us of plenty of thing to see and do in the area. Perfect location for visiting the Lake District and surrounding areas. The cottage was spacious and homely and had everything you would need. We will definitely be visiting again and would highly recommend.

5/5 isn’t enough for this place, it is great. The rooms were tidy and clean and there was lots of parking available. We were welcomed by the lovely owner and shown around. She told us about the cows and how we were able to feed them if we liked. She even went above and beyond by sending us a forgotten jumper with no problem at all. I will definitely be going back to this place!

This is a superb well appointed and well maintained cottage, ideal for a total chill out and good family times. Situated just outside Wigton, the Lakes and the key towns of Cockermouth and Wigton are easily reached. We were welcomed by Joanne and Martin who were both very friendly and keen to give us ideas of what there is to do in the area. We were met with a lovely welcome pack, which included chocolates, home made Christmas Cake and bucks fizz, which all went down a treat. The cottage is cosy with all modern appliances and we put the log burner to good use, wood can be supplied by the farm's own wood store. As the cottage is within a working farm there is an opportunity to feed the calf's and do take up the invitation to do a farm walk with Martin, it's well worth it. Would definitely recommend a stay at this hidden gem and hope to go back soon.

This has to be without doubt the most family friendly place we’ve stayed at. The hosts Martin and Joanne are very welcoming as are the beautiful farm dogs! On arrival there was a parcel of local produce including eggs, scones and jam that went down a treat. As for the accommodation it is very well placed for easy access to the Lakes and beyond, we went North, South and West during our stay with ease. The cottage is immaculately presented and very clean indeed. Every detail has been covered from an excellent wide range of pots and pans to child seats for the toilets. Our two young children (4 & 2) were well catered for with a wide range of toys and games for them to play with and all of the out door toys such as a ride along tractors, scooters and carts. Joanne was very helpful and was only to pleased to show our girls the 4 week old dairy calf’s that make up part of the farm. We enjoyed morning walks down the entrance track with Lily the puppy collie and the on site play area with slides and football was a welcome distraction whilst tea was being made. We really cannot recommend this cottage enough, we comfortably slept 4 adults and 2 children and there was plenty of living space for the party too. Internet is provided and is fast enough for the kids to access YouTube and alike. The biggest compliment I can say is that it was like a home from home and we will definitely be back!!

We had the most fantastic Holiday in Cumbria. The Old Grainstore completely surpassed expectations. It is a gorgeous little cottage, that has been beautifully converted and well maintained. Everything we could possibly need had been provided. We received a lovely welcome basket filled with homemade scones, banana bread, and local jam. Joanne had also left a selection of toys for my little girl to play with during our stay which she absolutely adored, and was so thoughtful. All the rooms were well appointed, comfy beds and sofas, and beautifully decorated. We loved the outside space, a little courtyard at the back where we had a barbecue one evening (also provided by our lovely hosts), and a lawned area next to a field with calves and sheep with ride on toys which my daughter also loved. We had the opportunity to feed the calves in the evenings, and we were also taken on a nature walk around the farm one evening where we saw a buzzard, heron and two hares (amongst other wildlife). Our hosts were so friendly and accommodating, I really cannot fault The Old Grainstore. We has such a wonderful time. I was pretty devastated when we had to leave! I would thoroughly recommend you book your holiday here!

I am always torn about leaving a review for places like this as we want to keep it a secret. It was perfect. With three young kids we couldn't have picked better. The kids loved staying in a farm and having the huge enclosed space to play in. After a day at the lakes, they were straight outside on their bikes while we did dinner-we struggled to get them in. The accommodation is perfect; modern, but retaining that authentic barn feel. The owners are genuinely nice friendly people. They take time to answer all the kids questions about the farm, and, if you time it well, you get to see sheep dogs in action. The quiet, oh the quiet! Not a road noise or the sound of another human. The night silence is only broken by the odd neigh of a donkey. The only down side is that the week will fly by. If we'd time for two weeks then we would have down that. My wife accepted and wallowed in the praise of finding this place. Major brownie points for her.

We stayed in The Old Grainstore for a recent family break. It is fair to say the accommodation surpassed our expectations, with some age appropriate toys and games provided for the kids, great outside space to play in and superb facilities. Bedrooms were perfectly equipped for our needs, and were more spacious than the photos suggested. Everything was in perfect condition on arrival, and the scones left for us were lovely. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and the kids really enjoyed feeding the calves on the farm. If we plan to visit the area in the future we wouldn't look anywhere else!

Great for families with young children, especially in the warmer months with the garden and footballs, scooters and ride on tractor to play on. Fresh eggs, milk and cake upon arrival and amazingly clean and comfortable with everything you could possibly want or need whilst staying away. Highly recommended and excellent value. We look forward to returning!

We stayed over Easter 2016 in this wonderful cottage. The cottage itself is beautiful and the owners Joanne and Martin have thought of everything - we could not fault it. Comfy beds, great showers and large bath, well equipped kitchen and toys for the children with a safe play area outside. The Bairds are great hosts and could not be more helpful - the fresh farm eggs and cakes were a great welcome and the children enjoyed helping to feed the calves. The cottage is ideally located for the many attractions of the North Lakes and only 5 minutes from the small town of Wigton. There are some great county pubs and tea rooms near by. We will definitely be returning to the Old Grainstore.

The Old Grainstore was beautiful and we all had a wonderful holiday. The owners have paid so much attention to detail, from the well stocked kitchen, lovely comfortable beds, first class heating and showers and the great outside space. The accommodation is near so many attractions but you could easily spend the day relaxing at home. We will definitely be back.

I spent a week in this beautifully renovated old grainstore. The house was very well heated throughout, with excellent showers (plenty of hot water) and comfortable beds. The three bedrooms were nicely decorated and the whole house very clean. It was particularly good having two showers and three WCs. I found it to be very quiet (apart from the odd mooing of cows close by) and located in a lovely area with lots of things to see and do only a short drive away. All of the bedrooms, as well as the main bathroom and an en-suite WC, are upstairs. Each bedroom has a Velux window with a blind, as well as a window with curtains. The stairs are not too deep and were easily managed by my mum, who has a bad knee and sometimes find stairs difficult. I would gladly recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing break in a quiet part of Cumbria.

What an absolutely stunning cottage - I would happily have this as my home and not change a thing! We visited The Old Grainstore primarily for a wedding in the area, staying as 4 adults and 1 child and could not have been happier. The owner (who was just lovely) contacted us prior to our visit and checked the age/gender of our child and made sure there were games / books / decor approraite and she felt well and truly special. She also checked to see if we had any specific requirements. On arrival we had a basket of warm, freshly cooked scones waiting, along with local jam and a pack of eggs - complete with the hens names. Everything you could want was provided (except a BBQ although I didnt ask if there was one) There were logs for the fire - which, despite the warm weather, we lit - as it would be wrong to visit the lakes and not have a log fire burning. There was a grassed area complete with picnic table, a football goal and swingball which was great and of course, the farm which we were free to roam. Beds were v comfortable, furniture lovely, bathrooms great. Decent location - a few local pubs that we tried and within 30 mins drive of many places to visit such as Bitts Park, Carlisle Castle, Ullswater Steamers, Hadrians Wall etc. Would point out that this is not somewhere to stay if you're not driving. I would not hesitate to stay here again. It really was lovely. Thank you

Just got back from an absolutely fantastic week staying in the old grain store. The cottage was fantastic and finished to a very high/clean standard. We received a lovely warm welcome from Joanne when we arrived and the welcome really set the tone for the rest of the holiday. The cottage is ideally located just outside the Lake District National Park and with plenty of amenities in nearby Wigton. Our two year old loved being in the farm environment and we particularly enjoyed the tour of the farm and getting to see the two day old calves!! We look forward to returning in the future

Our second stay for us. As ever - a warm welcome by Joanne and Martin. Accommodation was up to the usual standard - spotlessly clean and with everything a family needs. Martin took my wife and I on a tour of the farm; even loaned us some wellies. It was very informative and interesting to us City Southerners. Martin and Joanne are great company - so many conversations - they are now like old friends. Looking forward to going back in the Autumn.

I stayed in The Old Grain Store with two colleagues for three weeks whilst working up in Cumbria and found the quality of the accommodation to be superb. The property is clean and spacious with excellent kitchen and bathroom facilities. The heating system is extremely effective, so much so that there was no need to use the wood burner in the living room (which was a bit of a shame as it looks really great). Being located around three miles from Wigton and easily accessible from the A595 means that Carlisle, Whitehaven and Keswick are all within a 30 - 45 minute drive. Furthermore Wigton station is walkable (about 1 hour) and buses to Carlisle and Keswick are available just up the road in Bolton Low Houses. Plenty of information about the local area is available in the house and Joanna is always happy to provide more. The wifi is also very good, especially compared with most other rural accommodation I have stayed at in the past. Joanna made us feel very welcome with a warm, accommodating and always positive demeanour. She kindly provided clean towels, bed sheets, eggs, banana bread and jam weekly (above and beyond what I expected). Being on a working farm also provides the place with a great atmosphere. The dogs were especially friendly and I greatly enjoyed their company. All in all I cannot recommend it enough. As either a place to stay while working or for a couples, family or friends holiday it really is ideal.

When we arrived we were not disappointed we were greeted by Joanne and shown around the cottage then left to enjoy the homemade welcome hamper. We decided to pick this cottage mainly for the location, we wanted to be close enough to the lakes but not in the middle of them and Wigton was perfect nice and close to shopping centres with most places just 45mins away. We travelled from Cyprus to the UK for Christmas: 2 adults and 2 children aged 6 and 11, and then picked Granny up on our way! So with a group ranging from 6 to 72 years a lot of boxes needed to be ticked. The property is perfectly suited to explore the Lake District and the Scottish Borders. From shopping, to castles, to museums to wildlife parks, we ran out of time in our two weeks to do everything we wanted to. Particularly in the cold, winter months - and the weather was particularly wild, we were looking for a cozy home-from-home experience. The attention to detail and comfort that Joanne and Martin have paid is second to none, creating nothing short of a small, boutique hotel experience. You feel with them, that providing a special experience goes beyond the contract detail. The working farm provides a really 'real' experience of life on a farm and how it goes on no matter what the weather or season. Again, provision of wellies for our 'Mediterranean Living' children was a touch beyond what we expected but so gratefully received and appreciated. Martin and Joanne have created something very special that I heartily recommend to everyone and anyone.

The Old Grainstore is a lovely place to stay. it is furnished to a very high standard and presents those who are lucky to stay there with a welcoming comfort at the end of a long walk! Nothing is too much trouble for the owners who are there to offer help if needed. Joanne's homemade scones were especially scrummy! Families with young children will enjoy the experience of living on a working farm. The Old Grainstore would be the perfect choice for a perfect stay in Cumbria.

A lovely place, beautifully decorated. We went with a 3 month old and 2 year old and Joanne had put everything in we needed. Great space for then to play indoors and outdoors and very comfortable. Would really recommend.

Joanne and Martin have thought of everything you will need for a lovely stay. They were very welcoming and all the facilities you require are in the cottage. The cottage itself is finished to a very high standard - very much a home from home. Martin was willing to share his farm with our children (which they loved) and the environment was very relaxing. Highly recommended.

Everything about this holiday was just perfect; the cottage was beautiful and being on a working farm made for a very special holiday.A very good conversion of the old farm building. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a relaxing holiday in probably England's most beautiful region

The Old Grainstore is a beautifully converted farm building on a working dairy farm and is the perfect place for a relaxing family break close to the lakes. The owners Joanne and Martin and their family are really friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay; fresh scones, eggs, bread and cake were very welcome. It's so nice that we will be planning a return visit.
