West House, Middleton-In-Teesdale

I've been visiting Middleton since I was a kid so finding West House was the cherry on the cake. The location really is stunning, as is the house. It speaks volumes when I say that I really can't think of anything to complain about! Thanks, Sally-Anne and Andrew, for a great experience. I'll take the opportunity to put in a good word about the nearby Forresters Arms restaurant. Superb French cuisine - so don't miss out on it!

The photos do not do this cottage justice! Cosy, beautifully decorated, ideal location and the owner was attentive but not intrusive. Owner has a farm & we were able to see some lambs being born and bottle feed some too! We were supplied with fresh eggs from the farm plus a basket of goodies on arrival. We walked the Pennine way to High Force, the scenery is spectacular. We watched rabbits playing and lambs frolicing in the field opposite. The village of Middleton in Teesdale is small, with a couple of hotels/bars and cafes with some independent shops. Well worth a visit!

This was the second time we've visited the West House that is owned by a very friendly couple, Sally Ann and Andrew Teward. The cottage is made of local stone and has been fully modernized inside to a very high standard. It contains a huge kitchen/diner, two cozy reception rooms and a bathroom and two very large bedrooms upstairs. The cottage has stunning views from every window and it's not unusual to see the likes of rabbits and pheasants roaming around. The town of Middleton In Teesdale, has all the necessary amenities. For a market town, Barnard Castle is a short drive away. For the keen angler, the Tewards have fishing rights to a section of the Tees River and welcome anglers. The Grasholme Reservoir is only 3 miles away and offers great angling for reservoir trout.

Stayed for 2 nights New Years Eve and New Years Day and it was a real relaxing treat. The house was spotless and so very welcoming with everything we needed, even a bottle of prosecco to toast the New Year. Landlady popped in to say hi and make sure we had everything we needed, she even took the time to give us the best routes to go for a morning run with our two young children too which was really appreciated. Both adults and children loved our stay from the warm cosy atmosphere to the nice walk into the village where we were greeted by the friendly locals....some great places to eat too.....

This cottage is in a quiet, friendly village and has lovely views. All the rooms are large, but also very cosy. We had a lovely, relaxing break enjoying the surrounding countryside. I have already recommended it to friends and we will be back for another visit.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful area and a charming village. The owners were welcoming. Wouldn't hesitate to stop here again and have recommended it to family and friends.

The quality and standard of the cottage was very high, hospitality shown by the owner was exceptionally good and we've had a wonderful and memorable holiday. Snow, wind, rain and sunshine couldn't dampen a fabulous week away. Loved it all!

A lovely cottage in a really good location. The owner came to meet us soon after we arrived and was very helpful. The views from the cottage are first class and the situation is perfect for walking into Middleton and accessing walks on the Tees-High Force, Cauldron Snout etc.

A well equipped cottage with every thing you needed for self catering. It is furnished well in keeping with the cottage and very homely with plenty of room for 4 Adults and 1 child. We particularly loved the separate dining room come reading room, a place to be on your own if you wanted to, or for family dinning. We really enjoyed our stay.

West House is a gorgeous cottage, cosy and homely, the views are amazing. Briliant location, didn't want to leave it is really home from home. Lots of walks from the door of the cottage. will recommend and hope to return

The property was so pleasant and friendly it gave you the feel that you was in the middle of the countryside when in fact you were only a 5 minute stroll to a quaint village with everything that you needed.

The House, the village and the area were all that we hoped for.

Loved the views and the village. Also the thoughtful touches for the children like the toys and games. The cottage was very spacious and well equipped. We were sorry we couldn't stay for longer but definitely hope to be back.

Very comfortable cottage. The owner called soon after our arrival to check that everything was in order. She was friendly and very helpful regarding places to visit and pubs and restaurants for meals. Very quiet, a good place for a relaxing holiday.

Central location for many attractions. Fantastic and very welcoming pubs and restaurants within walking distance, glorious views from the cottage. My friends and I were only there for the weekend but could easily have stayed the rest of the week. Having breakfast whilst watching the many different species of birds in the garden, and the lambs frolicking in the field opposite was a joy.

The cottage was lovely with an amazing view, I could have looked at the view all day! It seemed really well set up for children, I think it would be a great place to bring kids.

The cottage, view and location were spot on, with many areas to walk and explore without having to travel too far both for short strolls or longer hikes. The village had every facility we required.

A wonderful, cosy and warm cottage overlooking the hills of Teesdale. Ample opportunities to walk from the village on the Teesdale Way. I would recommend West House cottage as the overall standard was excellent, the owners were very helpful and we can not wait to return.

This was one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. Extremely comfortable (especially the beds), very spacious and well-equipped. We had a lovely, warm welcome from the owner and her family. The views from the house are beautiful.

The farmer brought a lamb to the cottage for our toddler to bottle feed which was a really nice thought.

The cottage is a beautiful Yorkshire stone cottage with lovely views from the house and garden of the surrounding hills. It is within walking distance of a village where you can buy all necessary provisions. The cottage owner is very helpful and welcoming even bringing eggs from their own chickens.

The cottage was lovely and warm. It was really clean and cosy and the owner made us feel very welcome. It was a very homely cottage and was a pleasure to come back to after a lovely day out. We loved the wood-burner.

Everything about the cottage and the location was great. We would recommend this to anyone wanting a quiet break. Since our weekend here, we have now thought about moving to the country when our children have left home. Would go back to West House again.

Good location, property excellent.

It is such a fantastic location but the property itself is also brilliant. There were so many lovely touches from the owners too - milk in the fridge, flowers on the table and eggs from their chickens. We can't rave about this place enough!

Loved this cottage was spotless. plenty room for kids to play outside, lovely view when sitting at patio. Bedrooms smashing bed to big l couldn,t kick my husband when he was snoring. will be back felt to relaxed when l got home

Excellent property and brilliant location - could not fault anything!

A lovely friendly welcome made by the owner. Lots of advice given regarding the beautiful walks from the cottage . Furnishings in the cottage were beautiful , straight out of the Country Living magazine. Large Kitchen , well equipped with everything for a lovely holday . We didn't need the car once we got there as the village shops catered for everything we needed. The cottage was in such a good location for High Force & Low Force Waterfalls . A splendid walk from the doorstep . Off road parking . We could not have asked for anything more .

We were very impressed with the cottage and the welcome from the owners was great - milk, eggs and flowers provided on arrival. We would certainly choose another cottage through Sykes. The cottage was well equipped and the views were fantastic!

It was in the countryside but a short walk to town. Very friendly hosts with extras left for us, nice touch. Beds very comfy with lovely linen.

Excellent cottage and a brilliant location. The owner is brilliant and the little touches such as eggs and biscuits are lovely. This is our second visit to West House and we will return in the future. The service Sykes offer is excellent and we will book again with them for our holiday next year.

This is a fantastic property with a great location for enjoying days in and days out. The owners are available if you need them but leave you alone if you don't. Middleton has all the amenities you need and is a great base for traveling further afield.

The property was very comfortable and welcoming with all the home comforts you expect at home but with the added lovely scenery and the warmth of a log burner. A very enjoyable stay at the cottage.

The house was everything we could have asked for. Following the cancellation of another property in the area at short notice, the owners of West House couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. Fresh eggs, milk and biscuits all left for us, spacious, comfortable rooms, excellent heating in the teeth of very cold wintry blasts and to top it all a super-king size bed for a great nights sleep. We highly recommend this cottage to anybody, it met our needs and more. Hopefully we may book there again next time we visit our relations and friends in the North East. Forgot to mention the views as well...

This was our first Christmas away from home, and my wife and I wanted to show our children what Christmas is like away from the city. The cottage was beautiful, we all loved the wood burner, comfy beds and thick stone walls. It was made even better by the snow! The owners were fantastic, providing lovely touches such as decorations and a beautiul xmas tree, fresh eggs and logs. I would recommend this cottage to anyone!

The size of the cottage was better than our expectations. The super king size bed was most comfortable. The central heating kept us nice and warm through the wintry weather. Excellent accommodation all round, and Middleton proved to be an ideal centre for our needs. Finally, even though we booked with only 2 days notice, everything was prepared, and particularly enjoyed the fresh eggs, milk and biscuits thank you.

The cottage was simply stunning, the surroundings were breath taking. The owners catered for all needs perfectly and there were wonderful Christmas touches throughout including a beautiful tree. We had a magical time in West House!

The cottage was very comfortable and well appointed as well as being very well placed for exploration of the local area. The owner was extremely helpful and the welcoming provisions were much appreciated. The situation close to the village was also an advantage once we got used to the uphill climb back home!

The cottage is delightful, very comfortable and easy to live in. The views are beautiful and its location is excellent for a relaxing country break. I particularly enjoyed reading on the deep window sills looking out over the Tees valley.

Fantastic cottage in beautiful location - exceeds our expectations. One of the best cottages we have stayed in. Had never used 'Sykes' holiday cottages before - will be our first choice now. Great cottage at very reasonable price.

This cottage is stunning and you feel at home straight away. The views and wildlife are excellent. There is a log burning fire which adds to the homely feel. 5 minutes walk into the village. A perfect break.

The cottage situation was excellent. The car didn't move from arriving on 16 May to departing on 23 May. The cottage was warm, comfortable and well- equipped and the views over the Tees valley are first class.
