All ground floor. One double bedroom. Bathroom with bath, separate shower, basin and WC. Open plan living area with kitchen, dining area and sitting area with French doors.

Barnard Castle 6 miles. An attractive, detached stone cottage set in a quiet, rural enclave within upper Teesdale, on the outskirts of the small village of Copley, 6 miles from Barnard Castle. This Barnard Castle cottage was a former lead mill workshop and lies next door to the owner's home within sight of the original lead mill chimney; a local land mark. Long since landscaped and afforested, this Barnard Castle cottage lies in a small valley with public footpaths leading away from the door and into the beautiful surrounding countryside. With wooden flooring and a pitched roof with original beams, this Barnard Castle cottage has been finished to a good standard and has an open plan living area with a contemporary kitchen, dining area and sitting area. French doors lead to a front patio with pretty views of the countryside and the small wooded valley; an ideal spot to enjoy a drink and plan the next day's activities. The local shop and pub are both just one mile away and Hamsterley Forest is also nearby, with lots of opportunities for cycling, hiking and touring in this beautifully scenic district, which include the deer park at nearby Raby Castle and the waterfalls at High Force and Cauldron Snout. The market town of Barnard Castle with cobbled streets and the Bowes Museum is nearby, plus a short drive brings you into the heart of Durham, with its majestic cathedral standing high above the River Wear. This Barnard Castle cottage offers a unique, romantic holiday experience for a couple wanting to enjoy the beautiful countryside of the northern Dales.

The market town of Barnard Castle stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford in the glorious unspoiled countryside of Teeside. The town takes its name from its 12th Century founder, Bernard de Balliol. The castle was later developed by the Beauchamp family and Richard III, and the ruin of the castle still dominates the settlement, set on a high rock above the town overlooking the River Tees and is well worth a visit. The town itself has lovely cobbled streets and back lanes ready to be explored. The surrounding area is home to some fabulous walking country, with the Pennine Way, Teeside Way and the magnificent High Force waterfalls all close to hand. This area is home to some great family attractions and is a tremendous location for an enjoyable holiday.

Reviews

My partner and I have just returned from spending 3 nights in this delightful cottage. It was a last minute booking, deciding to take our dog away for the first time.. We were given easy instructions on how to find the cottage and warmly welcomed on arrival by John's dad. We met John and family later, very friendly and approachable. The cottage itself really did have everything you needed including a very nice welcome pack, and the fresh eggs were extremely welcomed when it came to breakfast time. We decided on the cottage because it allows dogs but, in no way would you know it. When entering the cottage, it was clean, fresh, warm and kept to a good standard. Situated in a lovely wooded area and quite central for visiting round and about. Definitely on our return list.

As this was our 3rd visit to this property it says it all. If you want a get away from it all then this is the place, lovely walks, a very quiet and restful place.

A very clean and well equipped cottage, with friendly owners who live next door, who were not intrusive. Would definitely recommend.

This is a lovely historic hideaway in a beautiful location. We loved exploring the local footpaths and the local area. We felt very welcome.

Myself ,hubby and little dog travelled a very long way to find this beautiful little gem of a holiday home.It was really clean, spacious and every thing you could require was at hand. If it wasn't (the lovely friendly but only seen if you needed them) owners would certainly of got it for you.I think we were blessed with the only week of fabulous weather last summer and most days we returned from our days out early afternoon to sit on our balcony and eat and drink in the sun, we could of been anywhere in the World. Its a fair distance to !!! To well any where, but that suited us, take your food with you to begin with ,but the beautiful country town of Barnard Castle is about 20 minutes away and sells everything , (it also has a Morrisons ). The cottage has loads of information about places to visit and has wifi . Advice to sat nav followers, it tried to take us up the wrong lane as we arrived, look across the road to the little cottage and you'll see Leadmill, it was so near but after a five hour journey we were too tired to find it funny. Would absolutely visit Leadmill cottage again if we revisit this part of the World

My partner and I had a lovely long weekend here! Was so comfortable and had everything you need! Lovely owners right next door but leave you to your stay! A lovely welcome pack is left of milk, eggs, biscuits, tea, coffee and wine! There is nothing around so lovely and quiet and lots of beautiful walks to go on! Would definitely recommend this lovely little cottage and would certainly go back!

This was a lovely little well cared for cottage, it had a nice view from the lounge and a wonderful river walk straight from the door. Not forgetting the WiFi, which was a real bonus for us. The owners, who live next door were friendly and helpful, the very generous welcome pack was much appreciated too!

The welcome from the owners was warm and friendly. They explained everything about the cottage really well and then left us to our holiday. The cottage was equipped with a good, modern TV, DVD player, freeview and even WiFi broadband. The location was superb with all of the places we wanted to visit within 20/30 miles. The whole holiday was very relaxing and we would definitely return to Leadmill Workshop.

Had a wonderful few days here and very grateful for the flexibility to only have 6 nights fitting in with another holiday. Super owners and enjoyed gentle pace of life. Very relaxing. Great place to visit the surrounding area from. Really appreciated the 'goodies' on arrival. Thank you.

Cottage was in an excellent setting with plenty of walking for our dog. Owners very friendly and welcoming. Cottage very comfortable and clean and the welcome pack of wine, eggs and milk a wonderful surprise. Would highly recommend to others.

...this is what our week was, in this beautiful cottage - everything we needed. Owners on hand if we needed them. Fully equipped kitchen, we cooked all our meals from scratch, large fridge with ice box. Large - easy to use electric fan-assisted oven, micro, kettle, toaster, TV, DVD player, wifi, huge bathroom with separate shower, loads of very soft towels Extremely comfortable bed, set of drawers. Would definitely stay again. The dog loved it too - first time away for him & he's an 8 year old large dog (rotti-cross). Welcome pack of wine, fresh eggs from owners hens, milk & biscuits was a lovely surprise - loads of leaflets on what to do in the area. Small patio with table & two chairs. We had a totally relaxing stay of a week that went by far too quickly.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 7th August 2014

Upon arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around the cottage & left us to enjoy our week with the knowledge they were available should we have the need. Comfy furniture, large flat screen TV with Freeview, DVD player. Loads of leaflets if you're wanting to visit the many places nearby. The cottage is fully equipped - we only took our food & made all our meals from scratch - great assortment of kitchen equipment. Large fridge with ice box. There was a lovely welcome pack which was a nice surprise. Very well set out open plan living area with dinning table for two. Room is actually bigger than it looks on the photos. Bathroom was huge with a lovely big bath, a large shower cubicle and loads of great quality towels. The bed was very comfy & a set of drawers having plenty space for our weeks clothing. Take a torch if you pop out late evening - no street lights here, but it was wonderful being able to see the stars. We took our dog who had a great time - he settled straight away but did get rather excited when he saw the owners 5 hens ;) We would definitely recommend this cottage & are planning to return - the week went far too quickly -

Very quiet and away from everything, it felt secluded..but actually everywhere was easily accessible.

Rated by Mr Warwick reviewed on 27th July 2014

An excellent base for touring/walking in the area which was very scenic. Enjoying the contrast between the popular Yorkshire Dales and the quieter area of Teeside.

Rated by Mr Jenneson reviewed on 5th July 2014

Peaceful quiet location in lovely surroundings, a good location for visiting the area. Welcome pack much appreciated. Friendly, but not intrusive owners, had the flexibility of being able to book for 6 nights as coming from a different property that finished on the Saturday. There was a large comfy bed and super bathroom.

The location was perfect for what we wanted to do and see. The owners were excellent and the welcome pack was incredible - I couldn't fault anything. The accommodation was excellent and we would most certainly like to return one day to the same cottage.

A peaceful get away from it all location in a very homely property. The owners were wonderful and left a lovely welcome pack. Bath sheets included as well as bath towels and hand towels, and the bath was huge yet filled really quickly. All equipment and furniture of great quality. There was a lovely view out the patio doors and loads of information at the property about the surrounding area. A very spacious and comfortable property. Would definitely love to stay here again. Very impressed.

The owner's of this property are great, and their children are even better, we were welcomed, shown round and then left to enjoy ourself. this is a great place to stay with a dog. all the appliances in the property are of a high standard and decor great, very comfortable, cosy a very special place. sitting out on the little patio was just heaven. we will be going back lots of exploring still to do and can not think of a better place to stay, with john amanda and their boys. welcome pack great milk, tea, coffee, wine eggs, biscuits and any information you may need just ask.

Booked this through a cottage rental site as a last minute long weekend break which allowed us to take our young puppy along with us. Price and allowing pets were the first things that attracted us to this property but when we looked more closely, the standard of the property and the location seemed to suit what we were looking for. On arrival, the owners were friendly and helpful and once we'd been shown around the cottage, we were left to it (with the knowledge that they were just next door if needed) for the remainder of our stay. The welcome pack includes all the basics as well as a bottle of chilled rose wine. All the cooking/eating/drinking essentials are provided in the cottage. The area is stunning with a river just across a small track and some grass and unbelievably beautiful woodland surrounding the property. The area surrounding the old lead mill (on both sides of the river) lend themselves to some fantastic walks with a deer being spotted running through the trees on one occasion! Just mind out for peat bogs, a rather soggy part of the countryside that I fell foul to! The cottage itself is reasonably small and cosy but with all the conveniences of home (with the exception of a dishwasher and washing machine but to us that didn't really matter). The bathroom is fantastic, the bedroom is very neutral which led to some of the best sleep in recent months and the living/kitchen/dining room is very comfortable. The wifi was a nice touch, especially as the mobile signal was sketchy at best (non-existent was the norm unless you head into Barnard Castle - approximately 15 minute drive). We look forward to coming back!

Rated by LouL86 reviewed on 8th April 2014

I absolutely loved this place! Set in the middle of no where, perfectly furnished, lovely cottage, a local town about 10 minute drive away which has everything you can need. The only down side was lack of mobile signal but if you want the perfect get away that's no problem! I will definetely be returning and recommending to friends as it's perfect!

Quiet and peaceful area. Nice walks. Cottage was homely.

Rated by Mrs Stott reviewed on 13th December 2013

The cottage is in a peaceful location but is an easy centre for heading into Weardale, Teesdale or to the larger towns towards the east coast. Barnard Castle, a few miles away, is a lovely small town with all amenities. We found no shortage of things to do or places and attractions to visit. We were warmly welcomed to a comfortable, well equipped cottage in a quiet valley, part of an industrial heritage, and with walks from the doorstep. We would be only too happy to go back again and certainly recommend the cottage to anyone seeking a week of tranquillity.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 23rd October 2013

Excellent cottage with the most welcoming reception from the owners, everything is available for you to just go in and relax. Phone signal/reception is limited which may be of concern if you need to be in touch with relatives or friends, but great if you don't want to be disturbed. Travelling to anywhere is not hard, but a car is a necessity, or be ardent walkers!! Whatever you decide, this is an ideal location for adults who are looking for peace and quiet. Ps: take plenty of jungle spray as you are the main source of food for the midges at night if you want to sit outside !!!

The cottage was extremely pleasant and in a quiet setting.

Rated by Mr Hayward reviewed on 16th August 2013

I booked this at very short notice, but the process was very easy and efficient. The owners were there to meet me with the key, and nothing was too much trouble. The standard of the furnishings and decor of this lovely little cottage, is excellant. The welcome pack included fresh eggs from their own hens, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar , milk and wine. The bathroom also had bath and shower gel, and soap. the only downside was the lack of mobile phone reception, but that may be a bonus to some people, and they do have wifi connected. The location was perfect for touring around the Barnard castle, Teesdale area, and is in a very secluded spot for peace and quiet.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 18th July 2013

Quiet location, good views out of the windows, South-facing so plenty of sun, very clean, very well appointed, wine/milk/eggs on arrival always a bonus, good parking. All in all a great cottage, particularly good for nearby Hamsterley MTB centre.

Rated by Chauvin reviewed on 28th May 2013

The booking was easy and efficient. The actual cottage was lovely - and the extra touches of the owners were much appreciated (wine, milk and biscuits waiting for us). Owners were friendly but left us to ourselves - the right balance. Area was lovely.
