Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to two pubs, a village store, a leisure centre with a pool and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. A great location, with something to keep everybody occupied.
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Our second stay in The Bothy in two years, so speaks for itself. The property offers everything you need, is welcoming, warm and comfortable and includes a large flat screen TV (with Sky) and DVD player. Also excellent off street parking for several cars. A convenient base from which to tour this lovely scenic area.
Fantastic cottage which my kids loved especially my toddler who loved the space to run around. Lovely area even though quiet in February but will definitely go back. It felt like home from home which we loved.
The bothy is reached by a small private road in a quite area of Southerness near to the lighthouse. So if you want peace and quite this could be the place for for you, but if like us you have young children it is also a good place for you. The information about the bothy on the web is accurate , so i will add a few other details, the accommodation is well kept and clean, if you have small children the bothy comes with a lot of toys and games, outside it has a slide and a trampoline for older children. For adults it comes with some books and film CDs it has a large screen tv in the living room and one in the kitchen .If you have very small children it has safety gates for the stairs. As for wheel chair access not by the front door you may be able to get around to the back door which has a ramp to it but the path is gravel so it my be hard going getting round but doable . The only real problem for some is the low ceilings in the bedrooms which you are warned about but you get used to them after a bit. Down stairs the two rooms are large with a big bathroom with bath and shower and toilet, Not much else to add we had a nice week at the bothy the wife said it had the womans touch to it in the decoration etc i think it felt homely but thats just me, Our two grand children loved playing with the toys ( they also had a lot of their own with them) and the outside play area.
The house was pleasant, comfortable and quiet. It was within easy reach of an atmospheric, rocky beach with its own old lighthouse.
Great accommodation. A lovely peaceful break.
A very nice and comfortable cottage situated in a excellent location for touring Dumfries and Galloway. A good walking area.
The cottage was fantastic with lots of space and equipment provided in a nice, quiet, private location. Very close to the beach and lighthouse with shop and pubs within walking distance.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Bothy. It was exceptionally clean and well presented and the cottage sits in a private and secluded garden. There is excellent off road parking for the car, and it is only a short walk to the sea.The owners have given the holiday maker many home comforts from a high quality TV, with a good Sky package, to comfortable sofas and a modern well designed master bathroom (and an en suite to the main bedroom). We were sorry to leave and will hopefully return.
A nice, well positioned cottage close to the sea and amenities. It was very peaceful and tranquil with plenty of space in the living area and garden. Ample parking space and very helpful owner.
