A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.
Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. The market town of Bakewell is nearby and has a wide selection of shops and eateries along with its Monday market. With so many stately homes, beautiful scenery and outdoor pursuitsthe Peak District has so much to offer as a holiday destination and Youlgreave makes a perfect base to explore this lovely area.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.
The cottage is traditional in style and is lovely and quaint, however, is in need of TLC and could do with a washing machine. There was a damp smell in the cottage and on the bedding which was unfortunate and the toilet completely blocked on day two. Perfect size for a couple, but a tad too small for a family of four and a dog. The cottage is within a lovely village with three pubs and a few shops. Perfect for us. Beautifully situated within a short walking distance of the river with nice walks. It is, however, on a very steep bank so if mobility is an issue, this is not the cottage for you. Bakewell and Matlock are close by and are lovely for spending a few hours there seeing the sights and visiting the shops and river. The garden is massive, however, not secure as the gate (which is shared access with other cottages) does not lock (broken) and dogs/small children could easily escape. The very bottom of the garden leads straight onto the roof of someone’s shed on which the roof has partially collapsed. Not entirely safe for animals and young kids. It is a shame that the lower part of the garden is not maintained as it could be absolutely beautiful if a little care was given to it. Communication with the owner was good before and during our stay and they can offer tips and advice on places to go and see and walks to take part in. They can email local walks, but we did find a laminated pack in the cottage with lots of suggestions on. All in all, we had a nice weekend break and would give 3/5 stars.
This cottage is described as Pet friendly, however the garden is completely unsecure and dangerous for dogs. The walk to the cottage is down a very steep cobbled hill, when wet is like a staking rink! Certainly not suitable for elderly, pushchairs etc. The garden would also be dangerous for young children. The cottage itself, is very dirty and bed potentially has bed bugs as bitten during the night. The pillows had seen better days. The sofa, my husband spilt a bit of tea on it, so cleaned it and we were disgusted at the amount of dirt on the sofa and it apparently hasn’t been cleaned in months. No channels to watch on the Tv apart from Netflix or prime as normal Tv doesn’t work. The stairs to upstairs are steep and dangerous. The bath mat has definitely seen better days and the shower over bath is dangerous to get in and out of. The cottage needs money spending on it to bring it up to scratch, new windows which close properly, new bathroom and kitchen etc. Very disappoint with the cottage, that we came home a day early. Definitely not worth £100 per night!
Just back from a fantastic 5 night break with my two kids (17&11) and our chocolate lab, staying at this lovely little cottage. The cottage has a lovely homely feel to it, traditional yet with all the mod cons too(including Smart Tv and WiFi). It’s not an easy trek up and down the steep stairs/slope but it’s definitely worth it! Couldn’t keep the kids or the lab out of the lovely river, which on warm days is quite busy with waders and swimmers.. although it’s only for the brave, even on the hottest days of the year which we were lucky to enjoy during our stay, the water is icy cold! Didn’t stop the kids from having fun though! Lovely walks nearby, and lots of places to visit. The village of Youlgreave is lovely, friendly locals and boasts a village shop, post office, deli/cafe and 3 pubs. We only sampled one of these and can definitely recommend the George Hotel for wonderful pub grub.. especially the roasts and fish and chips! The owner of the cottage was very friendly and helpful when I called the day before to arrange key collection.. giving me tips of where to go and what to see! We’ll hopefully be back very soon! ☺️
Absolutely perfect. Stunning cottage and location. Not ideal if you struggle with mobility as there is a bank which you have to walk up and down to bring in luggage but this was all part of the experience for us. Very clean and comfortable, like home from home. Beautiful village and everybody was very friendly
This haven in the Peak District, is a holiday my family and I will surely remember for its quiet triumphs... If you want to stay in the Peak District, in a cottage without frills, unencumbered, by gimmicks. Without the normal expectancy, unashamed luxury, then this bashful cottage is for you, guys. Cheaper than a Travelodge you can stay in the Peak District, in this delightful and most organic accommodation, nestling in its own pocket of paradise, and savour a great experience in Youlgreave in the foothills of the Peak district. The fact is, folks. I found a place that gave me the very best of the Peak District, and we had a fine old time. This cottage is a great little bolthole!!! Andrea and I had to forage a little bit! It was a challenge to find. That excited me! Tucked away behind a small green ‘cliff’ was this stone retreat in a tiny cluster of riverfront abodes, with a nature trail along the bank, below some 100 odd yards at the foot of the property. Access, was steep track straight to the bottom. The river morphed for miles, from brook to stream and then torrent, meandering through a small ravine, lined with woodland either side. Stone bridges and dry stone walls connected to some undulating forest, that became part of our backdrop and early morning constitutional. We tripped down this track with Stanley our dog for him to paddle and play. Not for long. This is where wildlife abounds! Back on the lead he goes. So, after a quick panning of this lush spot, flanking the ‘fortification’ was a sweeping route straight across a huge meadow heading for the Peaks. Now, the cottage, or ‘The Notch’, as I called it, is cosy and unpretentious. Pretty, and characterful, with a touch of the rustic. Mandatory, Inglenook with wood-burner. Upstairs is even cosier. Some vintage décor and a clean comfy double bed, with bunks for the kids next door. Cheerfully presented bathroom. Demure furnishing, and local art on the walls. Lounging, sofas. The galley kitchen has a stairway ascending. It is dainty, fitted, conventional and straightforward. All cupboards provided for, and are ‘unbuttoned’. A cute table and chairs by the window. We all found the accommodation unassuming and placid in humble repose. No beat of the drum or ceremony. It had a host of its own humble merits. A hospitable secluded lodge, with a heart. Friendly, without the flam. The peaceful and serene ambience warmed me to this wonderful piece of Derbyshire. Youlgreave, Matlock and Bakewell holds a great appeal for those visitors in search of unspoiled tradition and character bursting with a wealth of entertainment venues, attractions, parks and shops. The owners are helpful and lovely folk, and the maid, a real fastidious professional. I cannot praise the RIVER COTTAGE experience enough. We will return. You bet.
The cottage is cosy and comfortable with a wood burning stove which is delightful on a cold evening. There is a wonderful view over the valley and it is superb dog walking country.
I loved the cosy log fire in the evenings and sitting outside listening to the river which is just below River Cottage. The locals were friendly and the pubs were very welcoming. Overall, this was the very relaxed weekend I needed.
Lovely little old cottage in a lovely village, ideal for walking straight from the property. A lovely relaxing week was had by all.
At first it was quite a challenge to find... Now I'm someone who can navigate with maps on long walks across country side no problem but finding the cottage was quite a problem. The directions once we got to the Farmyard Inn and what to do after we got there wasn't very helpful and found it the hard way! its a very steep decent down to the cottage and we had a pram and lots of gear to take down which took a few trips... Being a fit young lad too this still proved a slight challenge! But we managed as it was totally worth it when we got to the cottage, the view is breath taking. You over look the river which you can have a good walk along which I recommend, to see all the rainbow trout in there. So quiet too, might get the odd person walking past down the path but always friendly hello's. The cottage it small and really nice, I'm not tall but had to duck a bit once upstairs but it adds to the character! Stayed in the spare room on the double bed (could certainly do with a new mattress... as the springs are virtually popping out so we laid a duvet on top and slept on that) Plenty of amenities to cook with and great facilities. 3 pubs to choose from in the village and a good few circular walks round there! Would recommend for a quiet and peaceful getaway, very close to bakewell but its driving distance or about an hours walk
The location was outstanding and the info regarding local walks and facilities was excellent. It was very well equipped and very cosy.
"The cottage was very cosy and beautifully done out. The views were spectacular, and there were lovely walks along the river with our dog."
This is a lovely cosy cottage, well refurbished. There is a steep path to get there so not suitable if you have mobility problems. There are fabulous views over the river and valley. Would certainly go again.
Very quiet and relaxing, lovely walks and great pubs nearby. We really liked the log burner - it was cosy.
Beautiful cottage and ideal location. Peaceful, but plenty to do in the surrounding area! Would definitely recommend and will hopefully be returning ourselves!
The location was perfect; beautiful view and very peaceful.
Excellent cottage in a fantastic location with beautiful decor throughout and good amenities. The views are stunning with the only sounds coming from the river and bird life. This is a great cottage with every thing you need for a perfect break in the Peak District. It has a log burner with a starter kit to keep you warm on the first few nights and WiFi for the kids!! The village of Youlgrave is stunning with very friendly dwellers and very helpful people. The 2 pubs are lovely with great Ales and good food, but the George is best by far!! The portions of food are massive and very good quality. We will definitely be coming back and staying here again.
Great location, cosy cottage with lovely views.
For the time of year, we had excellent weather and were able to enjoy lovely walks straight from the cottage. We really liked the situation of the cottage and the village and would like to return in the future.
Everything about this cottage was fantastic!!!! Wonderful weekend stay.
Comfortable cottage, very well located for walks and village facilities. Practical, warm and clean. Particularly liked quiet position away from roads.
Well equipped cottage in a lovely location, great for walking and dog friendly.
It was very clean comfortable cottage, very well equipped, the owners had thought of everything.
Location was peaceful and views magnificent. Locals were friendly and nearby pubs did excellent food. Many places to see and visit, and some excellent walks. We had a super time staying at River Cottage, and the owners have made this cottage home from home.
River Cottage was in a great location and had pretty much everything I needed. Plenty of crockery, pans, shower reasonably strong pressure, dishwasher, washer and tumble dryer all useful. Comfy sofa with plenty of room. I would really recommend this cottage for dog owners as the river is only one minute away and there are loads of good local walks.
Fantastic location and very cosy and comfortable cottage. My husband and I had a wonderfully relaxing time. And the dog loved it too! Can't wait to go back there.
Delightful cottage with everything provided including poo bags! Lovely area for walking with river just a stone's throw away. Three good pubs in the village, all serving various beers and good food with meat sourced locally. Path down to cottage very steep, not suitable for elderly or infirm.
Its location was excellent for walking from the cottage and local pub etc.
Peaceful and scenic location.
Fantastic situation by the river, a lovely cosy cottage. The owners had left many maps for walks and we did 4, they were brilliant!
The cottage was spotlessy clean and very well equipped, everything was in good working order, the only downfall was the walk from the road to the cottage with the luggage, the surrounding area is beautiful and the views spectacular, despite the weather we had a very enjoyable week, Youlgreave is a friendly village, everyone is helpful and will stop to chat, the dog loved it too, the river walks in particular were great.
A cosy cottage with plenty of room for the two of us and our dog. Everything to hand that we needed, the owners seemed to have given their clients' needs a lot of thought. Lots of walks straight from the cottage door in beautiful picturesque countryside.
Great location and it was good to meet the owner.
Great views, walks and friendly local people. Also, easy to get to places from.
We have just spent a week at River Cottage and had a great week. The cottage is spotlessly clean and well equipped. We had some wonderful walks and the dog loved the river. It has beautiful views and the locals are really friendly. On a steep hill so not for the fainthearted!
River cottage is absolutely lovely. We had a wonderful holiday there and thoroughly enjoyed waking up to the views over the Bradford Dale every morning. The cottage itself is very warm and comfortable, having everything we could have needed, and the people of Youlgrave are all so warm and friendly. I even felt relaxed and inspired enough to do a little crafting while I was there and made a little teddy pen holder and bookmark which I left behind as a small "thank you" for a lovely holiday. All in all we had a lovely stay and will definitely visit again with any luck!
Me and my family had an amazing time at river cottage we had a few teething problems when we stayed at the property when we contacted the owners who had just taken over the property came to our assistance straight away and dealt with our problem very smoothly they were a very nice and accommodating couple. The property is a lovely nice and relaxing cottage with everything anyone needs. there is a stream at the bottom of the little lane that goes at the side of the property where my 2 and 4 year old loved catching little fish. the location of the cottage is on a steep hill which is easy to get up and down the village has everything you need to enjoy your stay. the village locals are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone
The location and the peacefulness of the surrounding area. The beautiful and functional village of Youlgrave. The amazing walking routes that you can easily access from the cottage.
We loved the peace and tranquillity of the location, the warmth and endearing quaintness of the cottage and the friendliness of the neighbours. We also appreciated the many footpaths to explore in walking distance from the property as well as its proximity to local towns and country homes.
Warm, comfortable quaint cottage in an idyllic location. Excellent walks and bountiful wildlife. Apart from owls and herons there were no sounds at night. Farmyard Inn served excellent good value food and were great hosts.
Relatively small cottage. Some good features some average. Great view of Dale from rear Garden / patio. Helpful neighbours. Very hilly - not suitable for older visitor or with young children in my view. No car access. Dog friendly location. Excellent pub up the hill
Excellent views and walks from the property. The owners were very helpful.
It was a lovely surprise to find a bottle of wine and doggy biscuits awaiting us when we arrived! Sadly the previous tennants had not reported flooding the dishwasher and breaking the flush on the loo! However, our stay was very enjoyable and the cottage was very comfortable, apart from the new owner of the nearby cottage moving in her furniture.
This property was perfect for our family holiday, I was accompanying my parents and family dog - all in the twilight of their years! The cottage is in a very steep ravine down to a small river (more a large stream). You can, as mentioned by others, if you wish park at the bottom and walk up if it's a problem, though we didn't bother! Parking at the top on the main road was never a problem - we usually parked just off the 'main' road next to the nearby pub. The cottage is very clean and VERY comfortable. I can only imagine people who complained about cleanliness are not going out walking and bothered about the odd mark on the carpet?! There is a wonderful patio where you can sit sipping your drink after a long days walking and see people struggling up or down the ravine! There are a lot of DVDs and a PS2 with a load of games in the living room that was a nice touch for groups to use at the end of the day. Location is brilliant, couldn't be better for anywhere in the Peaks. Bakewell and Matlock are minutes away for supplies and great walks are everywhere! Thoroughly recommended.
Fantastic location. The owner was fabulous with instructions and lots of information - very understanding and accommodating. Three pubs all serving good quality and value food. Great walks - lovely and friendly village. Nice welcome pack from owner for us and the dogs. THANK YOU - we will definitely return.
Beautiful Location - don't let the steep access put you off - you can drive to bottom when leaving to pack the car. We had a great time - like stepping back in time. Youlgreave is a lovely village and great base for visiting the peak. You can walk through some of the most picturesque dales from the house, stopping off for great food and beer in local villages. Cottage is well maintained and very comfortable - no complaints, but toilet needs fixing.
We were left in peace and not bothered by anybody. The location was central to everywhere we wanted to go. It was very peaceful with plenty of places to walk with the dog. We were very lucky with the weather which nobody can predict!
Lovely cottage to base yourself in.
The property in general was very comfortable. In a totally unbiased and truthful opinion the carpet was very unclean in the lounge and there was alot of mould in the bathroom. The two bedrooms were in a good condition and there is outside space. The garden is not child friendly as it has a steep drop. The cottage is situated down a very sharp sloping pathway and is very slippery when wet and is not ideal when carrying luggage. The dog loved the river and had a great time, however the walks are limited and we left two days early. The village activities are limited. All in all we did have a very pleasant stay.
The cottage was lovely with excellent views over the Bradford Dale. Youlgrave itself, is a beautiful village, peerfect for walking and everyone there gave us such a wonderful warm welcome.
Very welcoming, lovely cottage, beautiful surroundings, great walks, Youlgreave is a nice village with nice pubs. I'm sure we will visit the Sykes Holiday-site again next year!
Lovely views from the cottage and the heating was excellent!
The cottage was in a lovely location in a nice village. Nice dog friendly pubs with nice food! Plenty of walks and places to visit and amazing scenery. We really enjoyed our time there and the dog really enjoyed her holiday too!
The cottage was lovely, had great views and was in good condition.
The cottage was very clean and welcoming, it was everything we needed and more. There was a complementary bottle of wine, milk in the fridge, tea and coffee which we thought was a lovely gesture. The scenery and location was absolutely stunning, the village had some nice little shops and pubs which were family friendly and good value for money.
The cottage was clean and the bottle of wine to welcome us was lovely. There was milk in the fridge and plenty of tea and coffee. I will DEFINITELY be going back at the next chance. I was so happy with this holiday. There were plenty of fliers for us to see what was going on around the Peak District, a lovely river at the bottom of the hill, and two pubs serving lovely food nearby. I had such a wonderful time, thank you.
The cottage is very welcoming, with a very nice, well equipped bathroom. The bedroom lovely, with beautiful views (loved the fireplace). The cottage is lovely situated. Nice village, great walks.
The view from the cottage was amazing, the surroundings where lovely and the stroll along the river amazing. We would use the cottage again.
Cosy little cottage. Great central location for enjoying many of the Peak District attractions.
The location was excellent, cottage was cosy.
Location of the property, the well stocked kitchen and the warm welcome - also the wild birds in the garden.
The location was stunning and the local people all greeted us with a wonderful warm welcome wherever we went.
Lovely cottage in an idyllic village. Close to walking and cycling. Very peaceful.
The cottage is right next to the River. The steep position is forgotten when you realise where you are. The garden is a bonus.
We really enjoyed our week at River Cottage. We loved Youlgreave and the scenery was breathtaking.
We had a lovely holiday at River Cottage. It is clean and comfortable and in a peaceful location near the river with some lovely walks right on the doorstep. The owner is friendly and helpful.
Location of the cottage was excellent and much closer to the river than we had expected. The garden was large and a lovely place to sit.
We loved every minute of the holiday and we will be booking again next year. The property had everything we could have wanted. I have already recommended it to family and friends who are very interested. Thanks for a very enjoyable week.
Beautiful location; very peaceful; a treat for bird-lovers; easy access to riverside walks, welcoming touches. The cottage is beautifully presented.
