We have just finished a perfect family holiday. We are a family with 3 teenagers. The house and location could not have been better. We were lucky to stay during a heat wave. The house was perfect for us. An easy stroll easy from Gloucester docks. We visited Bath, Cirencester, Ross-on-Wye, Bristol Aerospace, Crickley Hill, Newark Park, Dryham park, and Chedworth Roman villa. A holiday to remember!!

We found the Lock House to be a charming combination of old and new--with wide floor boards and very modern bath facilities. The location in the docklands put us close to the High Street and the Quays with restaurants and plenty to observe. We especially valued the private parking place, the scrap of land with a clothes line between us and the Severn River and the chance to stand at the front door and wave to the boats coming through the lock.

We have just spent a very enjoyable week here, the house is as described clean and comfortable just what we hoped for. We found the location of the house at the entrance to the very interesting Gloucester Quays excellent. In the quays there are many places to eat and shop and it also has a Wetherspoons inn. We visited WWT Slimbridge which was excellent, also the Forest of Dean and the delightful Cotswolds, we also spent a very interesting day out to Bristol. Great location and would recommend it, we will return

Spent a week here over New Year with a group of friends. Perfect location for the quays, town centre and cathedral. The cottage is Grade II listed so don't go here looking for a modern place to stay. There are very comfy beds, efficient central heating and bags of hot water for 6 adults, big range cooker (not that we used it much) and a fridge freezer. Open coal fire which was lovely on a wet and windy day - fuel supplied too. Would thoroughly recommend Cote Brasserie in the quays - great menu as always accompanied by very friendly staff. The Robert Rakes House pub in the town centre also worth a visit - open fires in every room and great food, but they only serve food until early evening. Brian the owner could not have been more helpful . Will definitely return when staying in the area.

Had a great week in this lovely cottage, such a fantastic & unusual location which we really enjoyed. It is very cosy & warm, & very well equipped with lots of items that often get forgotten about ie hooks on doors, cleaning materials, d/w tabs, loo rolls etc. The garden is a lovely sun trap & very secure for the dogs, although could do with a tidy up & a proper little fence by the river instead of just the horrid wire netting, which would improve the outlook no end. As mentioned several times in the visitors book, the sofas are incredibly uncomfortable, especially the larger one which you disappear down the back of as the seat is collapsing! They also have a bad doggy smell about them which wafts every time you sit down. Sadly the cottage is very tired & in need of some tlc as well as a good deep clean...we had to wash the entire cutlery drawer & much of the crockery & pans before use as rather grubby & greasy. Both the kitchen & bathrooms were not as clean as they should be unfortunately. However if these issues were resolved we would definitely recommend as overall the accommodation is of a good standard.

A very nice 3 bed 2 bathroom cottage. Perfect location in historical dock area and town centre. All within walking distance. Beds comfortable and spacious rooms. Large bathroom and a good size downstair shower and wc. Open fire was a very nice feature at xmas. We felt very at home here.

The cottage was very attractive and in the perfect location - a car is useful for exploring, but not essential, as there's a lot to do on the doorstep. It had a pretty garden too. Loved the feeling of being in the countryside even though we were in a city!

Excellent location with 5 minutes walk to Gloucester centre, historic quays and countryside. It was a clean comfortable cottage with a quiet garden at the rear overlooking the river. Ideal property for a family break.

We loved the location of The Lock House and everything about the house itself! We have already booked to go back in September this year. Owners very helpful. Everything and more you could want. The area very dog friendly. All you could possibly want on the door step.

Rated by Mrs Herring reviewed on 28th February 2016

An excellent location and a charming property that was warm and cosy. The two bathrooms/shower room worked well with 5 adults. It was great having a dishwasher and a wonderful large range cooker. The off street parking is valuable in this location and being a stones throw away from most amenities the cars could remain parked up safely without restrictions. The good eating places close by meant that a glass of wine could be enjoyed by all! We would happily go there again.

A very cosy and characterful property with everything needed for a comfortable' home from home' stay. The welcome milk and biscuits, tea and coffee made us feel at home immediately. The house has all the extras you need to enjoy a stay at any time of the year from barbecue and outside furniture in the pretty garden in summer to board games and books tv/dvd/music in winter. There were no "if only there was a..." conversation as everything had been provided. The location is great unless you have very small children as the water is very deep just outside the door. Very close to the centre of the city plus the very smart Quays development is on the doorstep so loads of choice for eating out within a pleasant stroll.

A very comfortable and cosy property in a great location which is suitable for any time of the year. The pretty garden and lock side location would be pleasant in spring/summer for barbecues and boat watching whilst proximity to the city made it an ideal place for a winter break with the cathedral and shops in walking distance.

Wow! What a lovely home this is. We really enjoyed staying here. We were visiting from Australia for a family wedding and this was an ideal place to stay. As we were arriving late in the evening straight from the airport we really appreciated having the heating on and house warmed prior to our arrival. This cottage is well situated within an easy walk to the city but being next to the lock it felt more like a country house. It was a lot bigger than I expected and there was plenty of room for a family of 6 adults. Our only issue was that being a family of tall people fitting into the standard sized double and single beds was a challenge. The only other slight problem was that the markings on the oven controls have been wiped off so our first use of the two ovens didn't go quite according to plan! While the home itself lends to a family with young children, the proximity to water and easy access to same would concern me.

Rated by Rod P reviewed on 22nd February 2015

We finally managed to get our busy daughters and their partners together for a holiday. And there was something for everyone, although we all enjoyed watching the comings and goings through the lock. The canal lock was at the front of the house and the River Severn at the back, with various paths for country walking and walking easily into the city. We all loved this wonderfully well equipped cottage with its helpful owners. A special nod to Vanessa on The Cafe on the Cut for a particularly memorable breakfast.

This is an amazing house to access the town centre and Quays, everything you could need is here, the house was clean and very homely. the stairs are steep and my elderly mother couldn't get up them so we did have to buy a z bed for downstairs for her to sleep in but this was no problem but worth bearing in mind with disablied people. I can not find anything to fault and we will definatly be returning again. The milk, tea coffee and biscults in arrival were a lovely touch and as all beding and towels are included it made for a easy stress free break.

Rated by Mrs Shellard reviewed on 5th August 2013

Booking service efficient, the owner living 20 miles away could pose problems if there was an emergency,in fact we had to call him out for something minor which seems a shame,if he had someone local he could call on it would be useful. But he attended willingly enough.Spacious house, furnished & decorated nicely, liked the novelty of overlooking both the canal & the river, unfortunately the inclement weather prevented us from fully enjoying the amenities.Loved the location of the house though. And being within easy walking distance of museums & shops was ideal as we do not drive.Favourite experiences were the various museums, the cathedral & the shopping outlet, particularly the antiques Centre. My only criticism would be the apparent lack of public transport, though we didn't have occasion to use it on this holiday, we might like to travel further afield if we visited again.Hopefully there would be more buses in the holiday season.

For us, this Lock House could not have been more perfect. The owner sent us directions and was friendly. The directions were spot on and we settled in without any problem at all. The lounge at the front of the house with its open fire was not huge but cosy and had all you need, TV with DVD, a stocked bookshelves, nest of tables, lamp etc. The large dining room at the front of the house had a very large table perfect for family eating, again a stocked information and book shelf with games for a rainy day. Pictures of the local area and in keeping with the character of the cottage are dotted throughout. Into the breakfast room which was at the back of the house. A dresser, a table and chairs for 6, music system, house keeping book, table mats, ornaments etc all provided. We set a lot of time in here, it was lovely. Off the breakfast room was a downstairs shower and utility room. The shower was one of these multi jet things - water every where, fantastic. A toilet and washing machine in there too. The other side of the breakfast room was the kitchen with double oven.with extractor fan Loads of crockery and cutlery, all utensils you would need, a fridge freezer, plenty of cupboard and work surface space. Back door leading to the small back garden overlooking the river. A picnic and normal bench to enjoy the view. The driveway is also accessible this way. A large drive accessed by large lockable gates off the main road. Upstairs. 3 bedroom - a double and twin at the front and a double at the back. Bedding all in keeping with the period, clean, cosy. Lovely period furniture in the main, beds all comfortable and spotlessly clean The location is amazing. The nearest bar/cafe/restaurant in under 5 minutes walk away. Shops and other attractions a few minutes further. Perfect location to see lots without driving. If you want to drive tho the private parking makes things easy.

Stayed a week in this lovely homely grade 2 listed cottage. It was in a great spot right on Gloucester docks and only a few minutes walk from the city centre. We had beautiful weather so the garden was very welcome. It is very unusual having the canal on one side of it and the river severn on the other. You can take a pleasant walk in both directions along the canal or river bank. The historic Gloucester docks and the retail outlets are a work in process and there are several units not yet taken, but it is still worth a visit and should be really nice when it is completed. The cottage was very well equipped with everything you could need for your stay and a welcome pack of milk, tea, coffee and biscuits was great. There was only 2 of us staying but it is plenty big enough for a family, with 3 bedrooms a lovely large bathroom and an additional downstairs shower room with WC. It has a good sized kitchen with a large cooker, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. Great place, really enjoyed it... Thanks

This is a fabulous little cottage in a superb location. There were six in our party, myself and my husband our two grown up daughters and there partners, and there was plenty of room for us all. With two bathrooms,a breakfast room and dining room as well as a cosy lounge, the inside was more than ample. The front of the house is a working lock, which kept us entertained on many an occasion, (the lock keepers are very friendly and always had a wave for us) whilst the back garden is an idyllic little oasis of peace and quiet, with butterfies and dragonflies. There is so much to do in this area we couldn't fit it all in, but I would strongly reccomend, The Cotswold Farm (as seen on t.v.) The international bird of prey centre, and the forrest of Dean. Take a half hour trip on a boat along the canal, the skippers commentry is very informative and humorous. The pubs and restaurants nearby are excellent, and the refurbished dock area is stunning, especially if you like antiques, although there are fantastic designer shops too. I can not praise this are enough, myself and my family absolutely loved the place and the warm friendly people. I did not want to go home. seen on t.v.

There was literally nothing to fault..I've never said this before!! The Lock House was beautiful and historic. The bathroom was out of this world - modern and yet still in keeping. Seriously, this was a lovely place to stay! Also, the location was perfect. The Cathedral and shopping mall etc were within a fifteen minute stroll, and it was rather nice being right on the redeveloped, yet still working, canal. If you wanted to travel further afield, the Forest of Dean, Stratford on Avon, Bath - everywhere was within a 20 minute to 50 minute drive at most. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Excellent house and in a brilliant location. Warm, homely and plenty big enough for 6 adults. Overall an excellent break.

Needed space and time to relax in. The Lock House Cottage fulfilled all our needs. A wonderful and very historic location. Great place, appreciated the opportunity to spend time there.

The lock at the front with beautiful narrow boats and friendly lock keeper. Everything in walking distance, beautiful villages in the Cotswolds and the historical docks Everything needed was in the house, we only missed a BUTLER!

The cottage is lovely, we were very comfortable here and its location was very interesting and different. Something to watch from the window - the working lock.

Great location, best equipped cottage we've ever been in.

We had a wonderful time. The location was fabulous, the property clean and up to a very high standard. We were in the city, yet sitting in the garden it was so peaceful and quiet it felt like we were in the countryside; birds singing every morning. It was home from home!!!

This was probably the best holiday cottage I have ever visited. Whilst the cottage itself has been very well modernised and is well fitted out, it preserves many of its original features such as wooden floors and fireplaces. However its main feature is its' location which is quite unique. The front faces the working lock and the general hustle and bustle of the historic docks - and the back garden faces the relative tranquility of the River Severn.

The cottage was beautiful. We were there when the Tall Ships were in harbour which was a bonus.

Lovely period cottage which was of a very good standard. We had a lovely time. The Cathedral and shops are all within walking distance which is a great advantage.

We found the Lock Keepers Cottage at Gloucester to be very welcoming and cosy and just right for our requirements over New Year. The cottage is very well appointed and the owners had gone that extra step to make us feel welcome.
